Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Club
About
The Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Club, centrally located on McMullen Booth Road a comparably short course, offering just 5,454 yards from the blue tees and a slope rating of 118. Most of the fairways are wide, making errant shots still playable. In essence, it is the ideal place to work on your golf game, to correct that nasty slice or learn to hit that oversized driver without fear of losing 100 balls. As a result, it is a favorite among novice golfers who want to be challenged but also have an enjoyable round.

Snowbird golf
I enjoyed everything about the course. I only get here in February to play, and found the course to be in great shape. The staff that I interacted with were very helpful and friendly. Absolutely recommend this course.
Excellently designed keeps us coming back!
The course design is the best around! It's not long by today's standards; it's a technical course. Our first time back since 2022 shows better conditions. While some traps have nice sand, others are like hitting out of powder mixed with dirt. Tight fairway lies are standard here now-a-day's. The price reflects all this. Due to Chi Chi's challenging course design we consider it a bargain.
Slow pace
Good layout but slow play. Waited 40 minutes at a par 3 which really affected our pace and play.
Guy at pro shop really bad attitude. No starters so it was a bit of a hassle since a lot of players were there. Singles, doubles, foursomes, nobody was pairing up.
Good value but definitely overated by GP reviewers
This was the first course that I played in the Tampa area (and this season) since it's been way too cold up in Michigan. I thought this would be a good way to break in my golf trip.
The course layout was fine and somewhat challenging. My biggest issue was the condition of the fairways. Too many shredded leaves and pine needles throughout the front nine. The tee boxes and greens looked as if they had a whole season without any maintenance.
Most of the courses I play in Michigan, even my local Muni (at a lower price point) is in better shape at the end of the season.
I guess all of the locals gave it a rating over 90%.
I played another course in the area today (2.9.24) and it was in much better condition overall.
The back nine was much better though. Played more difficult.
Slow day on the course
Not a long course and a few holes where the pace was very slow. Conditions were ok for this time of year, greens were rolling very well. 4 1/2 hours to play this course is too long.
Normal Chi Chi round
Typical Sat play. Friendly staff, starter. Player etiquette poor as you find on most courses these days, part of "growing the game". e.g. carts parked in front of greens, loud music, footprints in bunkers, scuffs & ball marks on greens, and errant shots with no "fore" warning. Approx 4.5 hr round. Will definitely play again.
Poor Communication
I reserved a 7:10 a.m. tee time as a single which was the first tee time of the morning. I arrived at the pro shop about 6:50, paid the green fees / cart rental and was directed to see the starter. The starter informed me that I would placed with two other golfers (which I expected and had no problem with). About 7:05 the starter informed me that the two other individuals had yet to arrive. Since I had the first tee time I told the starter I had no problem heading out on my own at 7:10. The starter said he was not allowed to do that. At 7:10 the starter let a foursome head out followed by a threesome. He said the threesome was waiting on a 4th who would catch up with them later on the course. He said he would try to squeeze me in with a group soon. After about 15 minutes the starter showed me the tee times list and said it was almost all foursomes and he recommended I just ask for a refund since it would probably be some time before I could tee off.
I still don’t know why the starter (or the individual he was communicating with in the pro shop) would not let me go off as a single at 7:10 (no explanation was given … other than it was against the rules). I had the same situation (no shows) at a nicer course in Clearwater and they had no problem with me teeing off as a single. If they are so concerned with their rules they should have let me join the threesome.
When I returned to the pro shop for a refund I was told they could try to get me out around 8:00. I didn’t feel like waiting around for a tee time that might not happen so I took the refund and left.
Chi Chi
Had a great day. Would definetly play there again.
Chi Chi's
Always in good shape. Don't have to hit it long, but you need to hit it straight. Greens roll well and are fairly quick. Staff are very friendly.
Slow golf ruins it for everyone
This is a fun little quirky course that is surprisingly challenging, rewards shotmaking, and has surprisingly high-quality bunkers and greens. Everything about this course should be an elevated experience - except pace of play sucks the joy out of the round. We watched a 4-some take 18 minutes to just clear the tee-shot landing area on the opening hole. I love that places like ChiChi’s exist for new golfers, and it’s a great place to learn and grow as a player, but there’s just no excuse when a course allows backups like this - and while timely rounds are the responsibility of all golfers, course management is ultimately the responsibility of the course, a marshall, and some time checks. ChiChi’s could comfortably be a 3 hour round, 3.5hr would be OK, 4hr MAX. 5.5hrs is just painful. Courses who allow slow play are the problem. Active management on pace of play would take ChiChis from 2/5 to 4/5 stars overnight. Just give slow players a ticket for a small bucket of balls for every hole you make them skip to keep the place moving. It’s a shame to have avoid ChiChi’s because of pace of play - but I also can’t stomach playing there more than one time year. I enjoy it enough to go back and try again - only to be frustrated and disappointed by pace management (not course quality) every time.
Slow Fridays
Very slow due to two leagues playing ahead of us the last league exchanging players after 6 holes played never heard of such any where else a very lack of respect for other players management must make changes if they want us to continue playing here lots of choices out there.
Florida courses don't care whatsoever about pace of play. Snowbirds will jam the course all winter playing 6 hour rounds, no questions asked. So what does the course care. Unfortunate reality of living here.
