Colonial Country Club
About
Colonial Country Club, located in Fort Worth on the southern banks of the Trinity River and near TCU, is one of the most historic golf clubs in Texas. The club was founded in 1936 by Marvin Leonard, who sought to have a north Texas club with smooth, bent grass greens (unheard of at the time, as many courses had either sand or Bermuda turf). The course was originally designed by Texan John Bredemus and Oklahoma architect Perry Maxwell, who formally worked with Dr. Alister Mackenzie. Holes no. 3-5 are nicknamed the “Horrible Horseshoe” and represent the strongest stretch on the course, featuring a 247-yard par-3 4th hole bookended by long and demanding par 4s. Colonial Country Club hosted the 1941 U.S. Open, won by Craig Wood and was the first time the event was staged in Texas. Despite now playing over 7,200 yards, Colonial maintains a reputation to this day as a ball-striker’s playground. Ben Hogan won the Colonial golf tournament five times. Other multiple winners of this longstanding PGA Tour event include Lee Trevino, Billy Casper, Nick Price and Ben Crenshaw.

Golf Advisor: Top Courses in Florida (2014 #11)
Reviews
Good for the money
The course didn't disappoint. I liked the fact that when we booked the told us they had aerated and that the course was close to be in the condition it was before aeration and they were correct. Good value for the money.
good even in the rain
I like this course. Some challenging holes but fair. I enjoyed my round despite aeration, minor construction & rain (it is summer in florida).
Misleading
Hello,
Let me start by saying that I play this course a few times a year when the public is allowed to. It is typically enjoyable and a well maintained course. I used Golf Now to book my round, the price was what we typically pay to enjoy a round at this course. The information regarding course maintenance on the Golf Now app was blended in with the course dress code, and the print was tiny. The round I booked and played with my son and two friends at Colonial Country was an absolute failure. We had no idea of the maitenance the course was doing until we got there, the fairways had been verticut and the greens had been punched. of course if I had cancelled then I would have been charged, and they were unwilling to compromise on their $45 fee, on top of that the staff was rude, rushing us to the tee when the group in front of us was late, they then sent that group out directly behind us and the group in front of us was 3 holes out. We caught the group in front of us by hole 5 and the were told we needed to pick it up that we were behind pace. We informed the ranger that we can't go any faster than the group in front of us. From there forward he did leave us alone. some of the amenities such as the ice machine could not be used due to the maintenance and we found out that the course had been closed for about 2 weeks. In my opinion they should have waited another 2 weeks.
Thanks
Excellent course
My wife and I played here. She is a beginner golfer and the course was set up to make it fun for her. It was challenging for me also. Course was beautiful and my wife shot a lot of pictures. We want to show our friends back home the great course we played at a tremendous value. Just about everything about the course was pristine, course closing next day for some renovations. Would come back and play again.
Colonial
Colonial is in great shapeshape. Fun layout and fair. Free range balls make it a great deal.
Beutiful course
The staff was very pleasant and helpful. We did have a group of Members behind us that were very rude and played right up on us before we could clear the green.
Great course and friendly staff
I'm big on customer service and feeling appreciated from business's that you give business to. Not only is the course layout fun and challenging , but staff was very friendly and personable. That was my 3rd time playing there and I will be back. They are working on some of the tee boxes and sand traps but it was not a problem. Pace of play was wide open as well.
Greens and fairways punched
When I booked the tee time, I saw the notification about the aerified greens. There was no notice about the fairways being punched as well. Also, several tee boxes are being redone.
Play it in the off season!
Great Tract
Really enjoyed playing this course. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
Course was in great shape and the greens were fast, but true.
This course is beautiful
Played with my son visiting from college and 2 friends. We had a rain delay just starting #3 and went to the clubhouse to wait it out. Very glad we did and not get a rain check because we got to get 18 holes in and the course is beautiful and in excellent shape. Nice moguls in the fairways and #18 is quite challenging. Very enjoyable day and can't wait to return! Would DEFINATELY recommend this course.
Would have been a 5 but...
Colonial is one of the best in SW Florida. Played with a big hitter who hit from the tips (7400 yards) and he was impressed and challenged. I had all I wanted at 6600 yards. Course in excellent shape. Tough greens to read as they have subtle moves that you can't easily see.
Would have given a 5 but the starter acted like he didn't want us there. Then we couldn't find him to get "approval" to tee off, even though no one else was waiting and the first tee had been clear for at least 30 minutes. We never saw another group.
Prestine and Challenging
Course is currently in excellent condition. Greens roll perfect. Undulations on a few of them make for some difficult pin placements. I played her 7 years ago and the course has grown in beautifully. Practice facilities are great too. One thing that wasn't mentioned on the GolfNow site was they do not accept cash. Pace of play was good and they do stay on top of that situation well.
Bias against GolfNow bookings.
Arrived one hour early to warm up and the practice area was empty. Our group was ready to play 20 minutes before the booked tee time and as we had not seen anybody tee off since we arrived I asked (very politely) if we could head out early.
I was asked whether we had a GolfNow booking and when I confirmed that we were booked via GolfNow I was told that we could not tee off before the booked time. I remained extremely polite and pointed out that we were the only players waiting to play and was begrudgingly told that we could head to the tee 5-10 minutes before the booked time.
Ranger also questioned our tee off time when we were on the 4th hole - nobody in front of us and nobody behind us but he was apparently concerned about what time we teed off.
I am not bothering to review the course itself due to the snooty and negative attitude towards GolfNow members.
There are plenty of other clubs in this area who our glad to have our patronage when the wealthy snowbirds have departed for the summer.
I will not be returning to Colonial Country Club.
Great day
Great course, would like to play it again.
Greens were excellent!
My friend and I completely enjoyed our morning at Colonial. The course was in great shape, fairways, tee boxes and greens. The pace of play was very good.
Course was great
Course was great shape fast greens
Great course
I played a round here almost 2 years ago and remembered that the course was nice then, only down side was another player I was paired with was a blowhard that didn't understand etiquette or the USGA rules. This time I was paired with 3 members who were great to play with. Greens must of been have been rolling around 10.5. Course was perfect. If you want to play a nice course you should play Colonial.
Great value off-season
Private course available to non-members (and Golfnow) during the off season (May to November). Price very good for what you get - private course conditions, not too busy. Warm-up at the water range; course not difficult. Fairways wide, greens very straight-forward (I hate using that over-used term "true"!), water hazards not unreasonable. I always try to get a round here when I'm visiting.
