Good golf day
The course was relatively empty due to the hot weather (95*). Playing single, I started at 11:30am and finished at 1:30pm. I was playing fast to get out of the heat.
If you like target golf, this is an excellent course to practice accuracy and distance control. There are many forced carries that require some decent shot making. You will encounter some fun vertical challenges on at least 1/3 of the holes. This course is reminiscent of Champions at the Retreat and Hidden Valley. The course conditions were good considering the weather. The fairways were in nice shape with a few dry areas. The greens were pretty smooth and relatively fast. The staff was really nice and pleasant. The food from the bar was excellent. Unfortunately, no cart girl for drinks and snacks.
Several groups allowed me to pass on the front nine. I was able to get into rhythm fairly quickly due to the fast pace and no waiting. I was able to hit long drives and hit greens in regulation consistently. Picked up several birdies but mostly pars and a couple of bogies. I finished the 16th hole in 1hr 20min. On the 17th hole, I finally caught up to a 3-some and a 4-some in front. They completed the remaining 2 holes in 30 minutes. If not for the delay, I could have probably finished in 1hr 30min.
Overall, I had a fun day with minimal mistakes. I got some exercise without getting baked. I was able to keep my focus due to the fast pace.
Great layout with many elevation changes.
The course is great, if you play the correct tees! It was very windy, so we chose to play the copper tees(5400 yards). This made the course more enjoyable as there are about 7 uphill holes with false fronts.greens were in great shape. Couldn't beat the overall value for the money!
Excellent Course - I wish the sand traps were taken care of
The layout is excellent, fairways good, the greens were also mostly good. The issue for me were the sand traps were auwful and a couple of the greens were just poorly cut. Really enjoyed the course layout and views. I really liked the course. The distraction was the sand and green issues or condition. That brought the overall rating down.
When It's Good - It's Great
When the conditions are good - Vellano is amazing. It's a fun mix of elevation changes, big greens and requires a nice variety of shot shapes. It's fun Greg Norman design with tee boxes that really allow for a variety of players to have fun.
When its bad though, its bad. Fairways can be green-paint-on-dirt. When the wind is howling its almost unplayable. I really want to give this course 5 stars, I'm hoping in 2018 it get's a lot of love and turns back into the gem that it has been over the years.
very, very poor bunkers
nearly every bunker was lacking any sand either hard packed dirt or mud never very crowded because of poor conditions many very dry areas on fairways
Like the layout, don't like to wait
The course is fairly challenging with blind tee shots, forced carries and dramatic elevation changes. Knowing the green shape and pin placement is crucial since you're usually coming in above or way below the green level. Bunkers were pretty much without sand so may even try putting out of some of them. Get behind a slow group looking for balls on every hole can get tiring very quickly. I think the course can be fun once you're used to the layout. Oh, btw, the walk between the cart path and the green can literally wear you out.
Beautiful Views, extreme challenge
Layout of the course was very picturesque. On every hole there were views of either the hillside or the chino valley. Course layout was challenging and required well aimed shots. Almost every hole had a drop area if you put a ball into one of the many ravines. My brothers and I had a really fun time playing.
POOR COURSE CONDITIONS
I have played Vellano before and was excited to play again since I enjoyed the challenging layout. I was well aware of the aerification...therefore the discounted rate of $35 for a Fri Morning tee time.
However....the Fairways were in VERY POOR condition. Not just one hole....but the ENTIRE COURSE!!!! The only green grass was the greens and tee boxes. Very disappoineted in the condition. Just because you aerified the greens doesnt mean you should neglect the rest of the course.
Sad Conditions for beautiful course
I have played Vellano numerous times. This round was not worth the discounted $25. I have never seen this course in such terrible shape. The greens had been aerated and sanded and I knew that before teeing off but the grass on the greens was longer than the :grass on the fairways. The fairways were very dry, brown, terrible to play from. the bunkers had grass growing in them.
Second time around
This golf course was the worst shape I've ever seen a golf course in. The fairways were absolutely dry to the bone, greens had just been aerated and we're in extremely poor condition. Other golfers were hitting up on us, result of poor course policing. I have no intentions of ever playing that course again.
Wind makes it a challenge
Introduced a friend to Vellano and he loved it. We played in four hours and the course was in good condition. This course makes you focus on every shot, and the winds make it that much more challenging.
Challenging course
GPS guiding me to a wrong gate, arrived 10 minutes late, receptionist did a very good job to let me go right the way, catch up the group I should be, a little bit waiting every single hole, lost a lot of golf balls, challenging course, it worth to drive down 50 miles to play. I recommend this course!
Prepare for a Roller Coaster
This is a excellent layout that wanders through very hilly terrain and bordered by well spaced luxury homes. The course is not walking friendly due to constant elevation changes and distances between many of the teeing areas. A majority of the holes are designed to hit from elevated tees with forced carries. Choose your teeing areas wisely. The greens are extremely large and in excellent shape. Fairways have some bare spots but overall in great shape. This is a very fun course with distinct and memorable holes. There is a well stocked pro shop and good driving range. The clubhouse is elegant and large since it is a former country club. The carts have no gps and I do not believe there was a snack shop. We played in 5 and 1/2 hours which was not good nut overall this is a must play.
Ive defended this course but not now.
Ive been a defender for Vellano ever since it opened to the public and became available on golf now. My buddies and I loved the course, though it's Bermuda grass, people ripped it for being brown, It's Bermuda, unless you fertilize the heck out of it, it will be brownish but the fairways were always in good shape and the greens were awesome. Where else could you play a once private course with a unique layout for 50 bucks. But over the past year, the shape of the course has been dropping and we stopped playing it when they went through the most recent management change, but we heard some things about it lately and went back to play it on Sunday 7/30/2017. The greens were slow, very slow and not anywhere near where they were, the fairways are okay but there are weeds everywhere, weeds between bunkers, and it's like they dont mow anything but the tee boxes, greens and fairways, the outer edges of the course is just flat ugly. But the worst thing are the traps, it's unbelievable how bad the traps are. No sand and if there is sand it's junk sand. Weeds and grass growing in the bunkers. Though they have new carts and seemed to be better organized than they ever have, this place looks worse than a run down muni and no wonder they have issues getting memberships.
Easy does it
Course plays wonderful mindful of the slope greens are in great shape and the overall aesthetics of the facility are excellent
Fun Course...Good Challenge
A GREAT value for the afternoon golfer. The staff was EXTREMELY courteous and helpful. The course was in really good condition and the greens although not very fast (maybe 9-10 on the Stimp) we true as can be. Vellano is a tight track with enticing risk reward holes. I will definitely be back for another go!
Very tough course, but a beautiful area. Staff on and off the course excellent. I will go back for more punishment. My recommendation is you must try it once.
