What happened to this great course?
This place is a complete trash. They have basically let one of the best course in the state completely go. Course conditions were atrocious. They are still charging full price for greens fees too. Don't waste your money. Spend a few bucks more and go to Mohegan or Foxwoods.
What happened?
Normally I would not go out of my way to post but I felt compelled to do so. I was shocked with the recent conditions at FH. This is one of my favorite courses and I make a point to play it at least once or twice a year. I have to agree with all the other recent comments. The course conditions here are absolutely terrible. I have no idea what happened? The track used to be immaculate. Clearly there is some underlying issue...financial? It is unclear but I hope they can turn it around.
Greens have either rot or dead grass consistently and the tee boxes are covered with crab grass. I might expect some of that from a value course but they charge a premium for the greens fees. It is not a good value for the conditions they are providing. Consistently poor with only mild improvement on that last couple of holes on the back 9.
I would also note that their sister course, Crumpin Fox, has been in amazing shape. I played there several weeks back and it had never been better. So it is very puzzling.
The staff is friendly and we ate food in the restaurant which was good. I hope they can somehow restore the course condition. I would advise that folks stay away unless the prices come down substantially or they turn the conditions around.
Hi, awfitting88. Thank you for reviewing the course. Let us first start by apologizing for the poor experience you had during your visit. Your feedback about the course is important to us. We are working to get everything up to par. We have projects ongoing to recover the fairways and greens. The current condition is by no means the standard we strive to achieve. We are going to escalate your feedback to our team so we can make improvements before your next game, and we will continue to work towards an excellent experience by using your comment for guidance. Thank you for playing Fox Hopyard Golf Club. We hope to see you again soon.
Unbelievably bad conditions for $100 round
First time playing here. Expectation were very high. Right from the first tee, which was completely covered in crab grass, I was a bit surprised. Things only got worse. Almost every green on the front 9 was burned out. Tee boxes were horrendous. Fairways a mess. It is the worst conditioned golf course i have played in years. It got a little better on the back 9 but still can't believe I paid $100 for this round. Save your money and play somewhere else.

Terrible Conditions
I have played this course many times and this is the worst conditions I have every seen it. The greens were bumpy and half of the greens were dead, diseased or bare. Tee boxes barely had grass on them and if there was grass, it was full of crab grass. It's a shame a great course like this is in such terrible condition. If I were a member, I would be ticked off that my course looks as bad as it does. Save your money and play somewhere else!

Horrible conditions
I had great expectations after hearing about this course and having played the sister course Crumpin Fox. What a disappointment! Greens were atrocious-pretty much unputtable-very uneven and bumpy, no grass or crabgrass, bare spots. We didn’t see decent green until #17. Many Tee boxes had no grass. Crump is immaculate but this course is terrible. Hard to understand same owner at both courses. Worst conditions that I have seen all year(including every muni in the area)and they charge $100! Save your money and find somewhere else to play

Disappointed
I have been playing this course since it opened. I believe this is the best public course in Connecticut. That said I was very disappointed at the conditions when I played yesterday. Tees were mostly bare or had crab grass growing on them. Had to step on tee to get it into ground on several holes. Fairways ok but numerous brown out areas. Greens were very slow by Hopyard standards and had browned out areas in numerous spots. Pace was ok, 4 1/2 hour round. Beers expensive, $6 for a 16oz Miller Lite. Staff as always was very good. Its too bad that this course is taking this abuse. No rain shouldn't be excuse. Talk was this track was closing and maybe that's why its in the shape its in. Maybe fall weather will bring it back. Still my favorite layout.

This course is a disaster
This course is in abysmal condition. Tee boxes overrun with crab grass, poorly cut greens, greens and fsrieays with large swatches of dead grass.

terrible conditions
Have played this course for many years, always in great shape and worth the price. Not the case this year. The fairways and tee boxes had no grass. The greens were completely unplayable. They were extremely slow, beat up and some even had huge bare spots. The pace of play was 5+ hours. If the course was in good shape I could look past the slow round, but this course in its current condition is not worth anything close to the $80-100 they are currently charging. Unfortunately we will not be returning, very disappointing.

Where is the money going?
The course was in terrible shape
If I were a member, I would ask where is my money going?
The tee boxes were unrecognizable, fairways had crab grass everywhere, greens were atrocious.
Reminds me of when Gillette Ridge was going down.
Do not spend your money here.
Not worth the $89.
Half the greens were in poor condition. A couple were getting lost with dirt patches. Course was chewed up and very dry. Not worth the $89 to play. Beverages were outrageously expensive. Will not play again unless they lower all prices, there are courses nearby that have better conditions and cost less, better value. Staff was good though, young guy working the desk was very friendly and helpful.
Great course, service, and amenities.
I had a booking issue on my end where I accidentally scheduled to play the day before I had meant to play. The staff in the shop couldn't have been more accomadating with the issue, and the rest of the staff were great throughout the day.
This is a great course. I've now played a handful of times now. The course is challenging but fair, and has a lot of character with some really fun and unique green complexes. The course was well-maintained, and the amenities like the range and putting green are very solid. I highly recommend.
Great course, service, and amenities
Played 18 this afternoon. I had made some booking errors on my end by accidentally booking for yesterday instead of today. The staff couldn't have been more accommodating about the issue, and got me right out at the time I was trying to play. The friendly attitude was consistent throughout with everyone else who was helping out today.
This is a really solid course. I've played a handful of times. It's well maintained, and the course has a really fun layout with some real character and challenge. The greens and green complexes are tough but unique and fair, the course is undulating, and there is some real natural beauty out there. Some of my favorite holes are 7 and 8, which forms a corner around a big pond which is on the left of the green on the dogleg left par 4 and in front of the green on the par 3 8th. Not to mention that the course is very well maintained, and the amenities before your round include a nice range, big putting green, and pitching area.
Highly recommend.
Course was in excellent condition
They had 3 inches of need rain this week and course was soft but lush. Great layout and it is test of golf with many forced carries but a variety of tees. Carts have super plush seats and staff was very accommodative. Range balls included and beautiful place... Greens were a little slow which is to be expected and rakes in bunkers which is fine..
Great day
No raincheck policy is disturbing
Right before my tee time, the sky opened up and golfers were pulled from the course due to the threat of lightning. The weather radar showed this would be the norm for the rest of the day due to cells passing through. Because of the long-term forecast, I asked for a rain check. I was rudely told by the young man behind the desk that rain checks are not allowed. I waited and talked to the more friendly club house manager. He confirmed that rain checks were not an option per the new management. Given the high-cost green fees for this course, I would warn all that if there is the least bit of chance of thunderstorms and the potential for your round to not be finished, do not book a tee time at this course. For me, the idea of not offering rain checks reeks of a course that values making money from every available tee time instead of valuing the golfers that find the time to make it to their course instead of choosing another. It makes one wonder if they do not want to honor a rain check in the future because they want money from as many tee times as possible. Ironically, this type attitude and practice will certainly keep me away from any future tee times.
Miserable experience
So after a 2.5hr front nine, we were told by a ranger that the slow pace of play would be addressed, alas no. From the 16th tee you can see the 18th hole... nobody for 20 minutes. But when we got there, 4 groups on the hole. We started waiting on hole 3... ranger didn’t move the super slow group forward. 5 hrs in total, hopefully ranger got tipped heavily to hold the rest of the course up. If you want a disjointed non-tempo round, head to Fox Hopyard.
