Good setting ruined by poor management
Well the booking is a nightmare being an automated service that may time you out, don't count on getting your mates fourball teeing off close to your slot. That's a review on its own.
The three courses have some exceptional views from most of the holes. This is where it ends. If you play South or East and need a cart you'll need a local driving license. So while walking along, the group in front being on carts, you are being harassed by the incompetent marshalls for not keeping up. Meanwhile back at the ranch, we have been waiting for the aforementioned group to clear the fairway for about 5 minutes after their 5 practice swings and 3 selfies. The marshalls also arent afraid to zigzag across the fairway while you lined up an approach.
After the round two of us went to watch our mates come in on 18. Crisis, one would think we were out on quadbikes doing doughnuts on the (goat track) fairway. Marshall came charging in "Cannot, Cannot" before calling in the heavies.
Absolute zero logic is applied which makes the experience (outside your fourball of mates) rather bitter. Step it up KSC as it is the only accessible course in HK.
Could do with some improvements
This place could be so much better, it has magnificent setting and is generally a very affable place and is excellent facility, however it is let down by a real general lack of competition. The management need to take a visit to some off shore public golf facilities and see what is on offer out there. The staff generally suffer from a " cannot attitude " even the phone booking system is a real pain .
The whole course requires major over haul, some tee boxes aren't even level for example. It is still version 1.0
it could be version 5.0. It has amazing potential. It is quite obvious that management personnel need an up grade themselves
Good Design But Poor Condition
KSC North is a well designed Gary Player golf course. Very challenging from the back tees. Highlights would be the difficult and lengthy par 4 9th and 10th holes, the par 5 1st and 12th and some spectacular views like the par 3 14th. No carts are allowed on this course and it is a challenging walk for anyone who is not fit and healthy. Generally if you are off the second cut of rough you are in think jungle. So accuracy is very important to score well. Thankfully the greens have been renovated and are in far better condition than they were in 2014 and 2015. They are not overly fast but now roll true. Unfortunately the rest of the course is in average condition. This is due to 1. wild boars that damage the fairways 2. local players who never fill divots or rake bunkers 3. the sheer volume of traffic. The course marshalls will be on your back if you are 2 minutes late, even if you are waiting on every hole for the group in front. At over $100 USD a round it is on the expensive side compared to public courses in the US, UK and Australia. However, being the only public course in HK, there is no competition. If the course was in good condition I would rate it 4 stars
