Scenic views
Scenic views with great greens condition and speed. Only short game practice area that is poor.
One of the best public courses in TX
I took a week in late January and made a swing through most of the good public courses in TX. I'll admit that I'm an architecture snob and am not usually a fan of Palmer designs. However. this course is my favorite Palmer course. Conditions were terrific for January, Bunkers, greens and tee boxes were well maintained. Every hole is different and offers a varied challenge. The front nine plays through valleys. The back nine is on top of a ridge, with amazing views on Hill Country. It is less busy than its sister course and other top 10 courses in the state. I would strongly recommend this course if you're visiting the San Antonio area.
Great all around
You can’t go wrong here. Great condition, nice layout and friendly staff make this a course not to miss.
Very fun layout
Staff was terrific, super friendly and welcoming. Clubhouse was spectacular, looks like it’s been there for 100 years. Luxurious lockeroom and seating areas, was too early but very nice bar overlooking 9 and 18 greens. Arnold designed a challenging but fair course. A few artificial looking waterfalls, creeks and ponds but mostly appears to use the Hill Country elevation to perfection. A few blind tee carries but more landing room than you’d expect on a fairly tight course. Greens rolled nicely, fairway was in good shape for the season. Miss The King!
Fun course!
The day was windy and a little cold but I had a wonderful day of golf. The greens are quick but receptive. I wholeheartedly recommend this wonderful course.
Great Round on a Great Course
This this 3rd round I’ve played at the Resort Palmer. I appreciate it the more I played it. The course is in great condition, I think it’s the best layout in the San Antonio area. The staff and everyone was very friendly and helpful. The only downer for today’s roundwas the lack of food service at the turn, otherwise perfect.
Gem of a course - great views of hill country!
Beautiful course, wide enough fairways, nicely manicured throughout, friendly marshals, frequent beer cart. Seemed like we were the only ones on the course most of the time, which is probably true since we teed off in the middle of the day in August.
Great course crappy stafg
Started with Marshall lecturing us on keeping pace and hovering in our first tee shot. Made the round crap. Had continuos hassling by staff about pace with no one behind us and group in front in our view. Finally lost my patients and asked the staff to either back off or refund our money. It’s a shame because the course is awesome and very challenging.
Just a delight
La Cantera never fails to deliver a great round of golf. The course is always in great condition as was the case when I played. You learn to get used to a few of the blind tee shots after a few rounds on the course. Definitely helps to play with someone who has played there before. Great course, friendly staff, excellent round of golf. One of SA’s finest.
Disappointed
Having played its sister course on Thursday, La Cantera Resort course, I was disappointed in a few areas. I realize it is the responsibility of the party making the reservation to ask if the greens have been punched. My bad, I didn't they were. The starter when asked if the greens were in the same condition as the putting green, he replied, "yup, they look pretty much the same", not an answer I was expecting. Secondly the tee boxes were completely hammered. It didn't appear that they moved the markers for a few days. Also there wasn't any sand and seed mix for the tee boxes. A note attached to the cart roofs reminding the players to fill divots, might go along way. I realize the GPS system might not matter to most but when you've never played the course and not knowing where carts are located in the few blind spots, with this issue the time added to the round from going and finding out where the carts were. Yes, we even changed out the cart with a GPS not working. Got to the #10 fairway, out it goes again in another cart. Finally, as a twosome we played at a very acceptable speed, until we hit the 16th hole, where we came around the hill and came to a complete stop. A twosome whom we had not seen all day the foursome we were following and our twosome. It literally took an hour and a half to finish the round. A ranger might have been useful. All issues can be addressed, I would say, the support staff were exceptional.
Palmer Course @ La Cantera
The Palmer course is in fantastic shape! Every time I am in San Antonio I make it a point to play here. Out of all the Arnold Palmer designed courses I have played this one is my favorite! The greens are some of the toughest in the area. The staff is very friendly and extremely knowledgable about both courses at the resort. The mango scented cold towels are a nice touch when you finish your round. Can not wait to play here again.
Beautiful great course
This course is set in native Texas Hill Country where they have done an excellent job of preserving it's natural beauty. Tough and challenging course but fun to play.
La Cantera Delivers
La Cantera Palmer always delivers fantastic quality. Course conditions are always great. Pace of play has never been an issue with the Palmer course. Usually the tee times are spread enough that you rarely run into another group. The course itself plays through some major elevation changes with a few blind shots. Not a fan of the blind shots, but the views of San Antonio and the hill country more than make up for it. Highly suggest playing up one tee box from normal as the areas around the greens are difficult if missed. Major tilt to the greens, 3 putts are difficult to avoid. Most follow the natural tilt to the land and can be very quick if above the hole. Great course, must play if around the area. Take a moment and enjoy the views especially on the back, you won’t regret it.
