Mud City Next to Hardpan Photo submitted by danstone360 on 06/29/2020
We played Franklin Canyon at noon as a twosome
with cloudy skies but no rain.
The condition of the course was good, with rolled
greens and some spots in the fairway (typical in
California).
The pace was a little under 4 hours.
Good views of surrounding hills, some wildlife, lots
of birds(including turkeys).
Good value for the money.
Franklin Canyon
They should not be closing this course for a trailer park. This place is a GEM, and needs some investment. A very beautiful canyon in the North Bay, wooded, good breeze, sunshine, plenty of promise.
Great golf course
First time at Franklin, I’d definitely recommend it to everyone I know. Heard they’re closing done, I hope that they stay open.
Fun course. Sad to hear that it will be closing permanently next month.
Lovely - Too bad it's closing
The course is to be converted into an RV park. Last day of golf is May 29, 2024. The seats on all the carts need repair.
What a bargain.
So I paid 26 dollars for my round walking. You can 36 dollars for a cart. I like to walk. I just prefer it. So I stick to this but whether you walk or take a cart it excellent value for money. I am located in mill valley the journey time for me was just 33 minutes. Its very easy to get to and is 90% freeway driving very simple. There is a driving range and putting greens located very close to the first and 10 th tees so whether your starting on either 9 its easy to warm up and get to your tee time. Me of course I arrived last minute. I feel the course itself is a really nice balanced course. It feels wide open and gives you a great chance to attack off the tee. But there are still a lot of dangers that lurk with out of bounds and penalty areas. So don't feel too comfortable. The hole lengths are reasonable off the white tees its gives you a balance of hitting mid irons and wedges into greens. Which is nice. The par 3's are a nice length too ranging from wedge to 7 irons. Nothing too taxing again from the white tees. If you really want a challenge the blues are at your disposal. The condition of the course was very good. Was the first time since the rain when I felt I could play as it lied. A couple of wetter patches but nothing crazy. The greens were in nice condition too the rolled so well. Downhill puts were treacherous. My overwhelming feeling of this course is the value. It's 26 dollars. Does it hold the spectacular views of some other courses around. Probably not. But if you are going for a game of golf and not a sight seeing adventure. It really is the best value for money I have encountered. You can go here with friends and clown around or play a really competitive match. I will definitely go back again..
Play now before this hidden gem closes
I have played this course several time over the past 30 years.
I was shocked to find that it is closing in May of 2024.
Too bad it is turning into a RV park.
course in poor shape as it was too wet to mow
Generally like this course but on this day it was too wet to be mowed and the front 9 was especially bad. Grass was so tall that everyone lost balls in the ruff and sometimes on the fairway. It needs a few more dry days so that they can get the course in shape
Grounds very wet a lot not mowable
Course layout is good but the spring was so wet that the front 9 had the fairway mowed but not the rough so if you ball went into the rough it was hard to find if not impossible. Rough over 4 inches tall and had standing water in some areas. If we get 5 warmer days with no rain they should be able to get it mowed. The back nine was better but still had some areas where it was hard to find your ball.
Goat track..
Franklin is pretty bad these days. Sure, we’re only a few days removed from rain storms, but honestly the course shouldn’t even be open. It’s a slop fest everywhere, balls plug in the fairway, they can’t mow, so there’s little white flowers all over that look like golf balls… (makes trying to find your ball a nightmare) oh, and the fairways play like 2.5” rough. Carts are path only (which is a pain on a course where the path is almost always on the side of each hole you play away from). Buddy and I played here on a gift card I won in the West Am. Card is worth $120… pro shop old timer tells me $110…was literally written on the card “$120”… just a bad look all around at Franklin Canyon. And, don’t get me started on their food pricing… $20 Philly Cheese steak… yeah no. Suggest not playing here till maybe summer months, place is in the middle of no where and just lame.
Slow play and very mushy wet
Three groups seen on fairway on first tee.. one hour play first three holes. Very poor drainage.
Mud bowl
Sorry to say but the course was not in the best condition balls plugging all day so bad you couldn’t find them and when you did it was work ,
Good round of golf
Had a good time golfing with friends, deal was good for hot deal. conditions were wet and soggy, no fault of course. The pace was a little slow due to beginner golfers in front. No Marshal checking on the pace.
Franklin Jan 2024
Fairways in fair condition. Rough was in port condition in places. Greens were in good condition.
This course was very picturesque and could be a gem but would have benefited with greater maintenance. Talking to regulars there they told me the course was closing in May and hence the lack of upkeep. The staff at the course were very friendly and helpful.
