Challenging TPC layout... worth an outing
Played in an SCGA member outing for $65. Great value. (worth the $90 for the Mastercard deal too).
Shotgun start, got round in good time. Not too far between greens and tees.
The practice facilities were good.
The 18 holes wind their way up and down the hillside (with some spectacular views over the Valencia valley) returning to the clubhouse at 9 and 18. Wind gets up early afternoon and can be a 1-2 club wind.
Greens were running very fast and firm. Really needed a delicate touch on the short game. Had several 3 putts getting used to the fast greens.
A couple of quirky long holes on the back 9 (around 14-15 I think). Most of the difficulty is visible and fair on this challenging course. Nice finishing hole in front of the clubhouse.
Overall, it was in great condition given the recent rains.
tough course, classic TPC quality
played this course through the MasterCard TPC program, otherwise it is private.
as with every TPC i've played, the facilities were very nice and very welcoming.
prior to our round, we'd heard that the course had been badly effected by the drought, but there was little evidence of that as we made our way around. beyond of few patchy spots in some of the fairways, everything seems very green and healthy.
the course has a very unique layout. there is an enjoyable amount of elevation change. most holes have some pretty significant changes in direction. the best part is that, each hole is unique. so while there are a few go to tricks (elevation, doglegs, carries, etc), they all get used in different and interesting combinations throughout the course. another of my favorite things about this course is that you get to hit a lot of different clubs off the tee, and don't just have to pound driver every hole. even some of the par 5s are not driver holes.
speaking of which... the two par 5s on the back nine are the real highlight of this course. they are so tough! they require accurate tee shots with quality placement, but then the second shots are even more challenging. i think you'd have to play this course a couple times to really figure out the best way to play these holes... i know i didn't find it the first time around!!
18 is also a great closing hole. tough drive followed by a long second shot to a small and protected green. making a par here will leave you feeling good for the rest of your day.
a few quick notes:
the rough is extremely penal! it's as thick as any rough i've played, and it's pretty easy to lose a ball just a foot or two off the fairway.
the greens are no picnic either. they were VERY fast and if you don't leave yourself an uphill putt, you might as well just plan on three putting. you're going to need all your touch to navigate these things!
overall, this course is a tough track, but one that is very enjoyable. if you can find a way on, do it!
