RR Lakes
Played Wed. 4/29. Walked the blues (6875/72.6/130) in 4 hours with RGM2525, Robstretch & Taylor. They paid $26 to walk, I played for free on my birthday round, thanks RR!
I was expecting to play the Vineyard course, which is in excellent condition. That is what I thought we were paying for in the pro shop. However, their mens club had the Vineyard booked solid, so we were routed to the Lakes, which has recently had major maintenance. To their credit, RR was offering a voucher for a free round later because of the aerification if you paid and played the Lakes this week.
The weather was partly cloudy, fairly calm and in the 70's. Victoria Lakes is a fairly challenging course to walk. Holes 11, 15 & 18 are a hike from the last green. 2 big climbs and mostly flat otherwise, but this is not a short course and it's almost always windy.
The greens are at LEAST 2 weeks from being decent again, sandy, bumpy & slow. They rolled poorly, but were at least receptive to holding iron shots
The fringes/aprons were very lush up to about 4 yards off the green, where much of the bermuda had been vericut and was rough/bumpy.
They have been working on the fairways seemingly for months now. Many fairways still showed signs from previous verticutting and again today they were aerating several fairways. So several fairways had thousands of cores littering them, it was better to be in the rough. Thin in spots, good coverage overall but they are currently in poor condition until they heal.
The bermuda rough wasn't overly long. They had sprayed much of the rough around the greens and many tees so that they look more green, and not dormant bermuda tan color.
The fairway bunkers were more hard packed, softer around the greens. Overall, the sand was in excellent shape, very well maintained.
The tees had also been aerated & sanded recently, so they are not currently in good shape either. Generally level with good coverage & few unfixed divots.
The staff here is always pleasant to deal with and they generally get you out very close to your tee time. The drink cart was out and beginning to make rounds right as we were finishing our early a.m. round. Nice snack shop with great Tri Tip sandwiches.
I know they are preparing for a couple of big tournaments and looking to have the course in great condition for late May. However, the current condition is about as bad as I have ever seen the Lakes course. The exercise and the company were excellent, but I would not have wasted my free birthday round on these conditions had I known beforehand we were going to be playing the Lakes course in its current state. Normally, I think Victoria Lakes is an excellent layout in good to excellent condition and a treat to play. Today, with mediocre to poor greens, tees and fairways
River Course
I started this course as a first timer walking and you can count on getting a great workout but did take away from my game. The day was typical June gloom in the area even as we are in the end of April. Wind = check, Cold = check, friendly staff = check. I drove from Valencia which was 80 degrees to 58 degree weather. The course is laid out really well but not having course knowledge made some holes more difficult than necessary. I look forward to playing the vineyard course next time but would definitely play the river couse again. O, bring lots of balls for the water..
Good course
First time playing. Good layout. Friendly staff. Course in great shape
Lakes course rocks!
Windy, great views, not crowded due to threat of rain...super fun!
Good Value on Golf Now
River Ridge Victory Lakes provides spectacular views from high up on the mountain... Lots of water that ate my balls, but other than that, it is a great place to golf and see the views.
Course and weather were great , but the greens were punched . It’s that time of the year . So in a few weeks it’ll be perfect
Fun day in the sun !
Very scenic course with lots of ball attracting water!
Poor customer service and even morw poor course conditions
After trying to hit a bucket of balls 3 times here in the past week ( they choose to close the range early die to a lack of staff) we finally hit half a bucket before our 12:45 tee time. The poor customer service was not as disappointing as the condition of the Vineyard course. The rough was extremely patchy with bare dry dort mixed with excessively high patched of clover. The fairways were fine but the greens were inexplicably hard. 5 times my lofted wedge shot bounced over 6 ft high and eventually rolled off the back of the greens. After finishing the 15th hole we were proceeding to the 16th tee but the hole marker was for the 12th hole. We srove around looking for the 16th tee box. After 10 minutes we found another golfer and asked if we had made a mistake. He replied” oh they changed that hole a year or two ago but not sure why they didn'tbotwr to change the hole marker. When we finally tesumed our play on the 16th hole we were now having to wait behind rwo othwr groups. So is it expecting too much for the course superintendent to put a temporary sign on tjis hole. Every golfer that plays here osnt a local pr have played tbis courae 100 tomes and knows what to expect. Just lazy courae management and laxy employees who could care less about the paying customer. Its sad because this course has a very picturesque course with beautiful hole deaign and large undulated greens.
Punched greens
Was unaware of the sanded and punched greens. Would be nice for a heads up. The staff was great .they moved us to the vineyard course which hadn't been punched. The problem was we were not the only ones. We said we would play the lakes even though the greens were sanded. It turned out great ! 3hours 10 minutes. Automatic 2 putt and still lost 3 balls. Great practice round. Thanks!!
Grand Day Out
Home course in Ojai closed for punching. Four of us played away at River Ridge, Vineyards Course, riders/walkers both. Tee'd off right on time, pace of play excellent.-never waited or pushed. Tee to green in good condition, considering recent ++rains. Greens fast, but fair. I am short, played gold tees, and had fun, hit share of greens in regulation. Only a couple of long green to tee hikes. Co-player commented on views: Actually attractive sight of coastal mountains from generally elevated course. 19th hole with fast service, good tap variety, great burger, in cafeteria setting.
Sand Traps are horribly maintained and they are very behind in their mowing of all areas
Challenge
Good course has some challenging holes , the layout is good ,good mix of long and short holes. But the ruff is to deep, hard to find your ball if you get in it..
Great facility
The course is great value for the LA area. The holes are interesting and a nice mix of harder and easier holes.
The bathrooms mid course are not equipped for women , it is a porta potty , not very convenient of you are on your period!
Secondly the 17 th hole is mislabeled as the 13 th hole and we were not informed about this , at least there should be a post or sticker mentioning this , we went around a bit confused until a group in front of us told us about the flub😏
Ridiculous pace of play.
We started 25 minutes late and took 5 hours and 30 minutes to finish. It’s absolutely insane that we called the Pro shop to get a Marshall on the course to help with pace of play but nothing happened. He stood at the turn and acted like a Walmart greeter while the group two holes ahead of us fell behind 3 holes while creating a backup that included 5 total groups. One of the most disappointing rounds I’ve ever played. The course is in great condition but when you’re waiting 15 minutes every shot, what is the point in playing?
RR
Long course, fast greens. Beware of wind.
golf
little rough in places and sand traps were terrible. greens were nice but around some greens like hitting of dirt
