Better have your straight game !
Target golf . Very high slope-- meaning very dramatic elevated tee boxes . Very fun but don't expect to shoot well. Hard! You will lose a lot of balls .. I don't though
Awful shape
Tee boxes are worn. Greens have large rips and bare patches on them. Lots of dead spots in the fairways. Will never play here again (doubt it will be open long enough for that to even be an option).
Accuracy versus length is the theme
A very difficult course for the average golfer. I played this course on a friday afternoon. A foursome was in front of me and decided to skip a hole to pass their slow play. Accuracy is very important on most of the holes. You put your ball into the several thick bushes lining most of the holes and you will be in trouble. Take the club that you can keep your ball straight to keep your score low. Several holes has the cart path as a good target to get added distance to your shots. Avoid Pin hunting instead keep the ball in the middle of the green. Good luck!
Great course ruined due to no maintenance
Played here a lot and really enjoyed it. However the latest trip was a miserable experience. The greens were brown and has chunks missings on dome of them. It's like there is no maintenance and watering of the course. Booked a hot deal on golf now and felt that it was not worth it at all. Definitely not going back and this from a guy who recommended this course to everyone. Was a challenging and fair course but it's horrible now. The only good thing was pace of play because it was almost empty. Save your money and find a different course like Cinnabar or Coyote Creek.
Really nice course but ...
The Ranch is a challenging and fun course across along and down into a canyon in the San Jose foothills. The back nine runs across a couple of cow pastures down hill into a valley thenback up to the club house. This is not a course to be walked due to the changes in elevation and the long distances between holes. There’s the rub. The last two times I played Tne Ranch our cart ran out of power. The last time we were stranded at the 17th green a long way from the clubhouse. We called the proshop but when the phone was finally answered we were promptly put on hold for more than a half hour. Finally we pushed and cajoled the cart up the hill to 18 and we again called the pro shop. After again being put on hold for several minutes, we were finally informed that the phone was being answered in Illinois and that the were unable to contact anyone at the Ranch ... not the pro shop nor the maintenance yard not even the restaurant. This was at 2:30 in the afternoon which I find outrageous! So, I would recommend playing the Ranch ... but you should get some assurance that the carts have been maintained and that all the staff are not going to take off on holiday while you’re out on the course.
Weeds, Weeds Weed
So many weed you can find you ball anywhere near a sand trap
Don't they have someone to mow the weeds?
This course days are numbered
I’ve played the Ranch quite a bit (dozen+ times) and the course is in terrible shape and continues to get worse. Like many others have said, the bunkers are completely unplayable. They literally consist of knee high weeds, ankle deep water and NO sand. I’ve asked more than three times over the years when they will refill the bunkers with sand and I received the same answer, “soon”. The tee boxes are look like they’re never tended to and the greens are diseased creating uneven surfaces.
This course is challenging and requires you to be accurate off the tee and into the green which made it a fun track when it initially opened, but if the course is in as bad of shape as it is you’re going to have a frustrating round ahead of you for $100. My suggestion for anyone asking about it is to avoid at all costs. Much less expensive and well maintained courses nearby offering a better golf experience.
The recent reviews/ratings saying the course is in good shape couldn’t be any more inaccurate.
Very interesting course!!!
Views are fabulous.....the course is very very challenging....you start out having to carry a variety of different sized ravines..the greens are extremely challenging....many undulations and some severe uphill and downhill putting designs...if you are not saying WOW ..you are probably saying something else....
The cart path is amazing...very long and very scenic...some of the most interesting designed holes going up and down and all around....I am a visitor to the area and I would certainly recommend everyone give this course a run for its money But be prepared your scores will HIGHER than what you are used to..
Im hcp 25 and I lost 5 balls for 18 holes which is not bad considering we were about to quit after 3 holes. You must be accurate with your drives & 2nd shots to greens. Practice your putting tooo much cart driving the vie is fantastic..
Still challenging
It's not what it used to be, but it still challenges your game.
Challenging course with great views of the city
This was the 2nd time playing this course, last time was 2 years ago and had forgotten completely how challenging. Distances are very deceiving, bring lots of golf balls or your “A” game. I will definitely be back for revenge. Overall great course.
Overall nice course
Very much enjoyed the course...... look forward to playing it again once the greens are in better shape..... several were less than ideal. No driving range was a negative.
DO IT
Funnest course in south San Francisco. Like a carnival. Wild fun lay out. Lots of dramatic elevation changes . Great scenery over the whole city . Awesome!
Curvy greens but no out of control
Course is in BAD shape
I have played The Ranch a couple of times. This will be the last. It is in terrible shape. The bunkers have no sand. One has weird old bags and weeds. None are really playable. he grass is spotty on the fairways and worse off. There is no water in the water hazards. The greens are a mess, spotty and lots of weeds. And the tee boxes are in bad shape.
The course is hard. You have to hit well to score. But in this condition it is not fun.
Good Time
Friendly staff (especially since I was using golf now rewards). Let me out a little early, no big deal to them.
I've always liked this course. But it's now for everyone (gotta hit it straight). it was in pretty good condition and enjoyable to play even after 2 days of rain.
Cart Issues
Cart died out before 18th hole and we walked the final hole. When the cart died we were going up hill and had to push the cart to get to the top of the hill near the club house. A worker delivering food stopped by on his way to other golfers and said he had to deliver the food first and would be back. My brother-in-law and I decided after a 10 minute wait to walk the final hole. This was exhausting especially after pushing the cart uphill and finishing up on a the 17th hole of the course. Great views of San Jose. A suggestion to the club house is to perhaps have golfers switch out carts after the first 9 holes to avoid the carts dying out. Other golfers behind us were complaining of the carts bogging out towards the end.
