The Ranch Golf Course
The Ranch Golf course touts it has the highest slope/difficulty of play in California. This is true we have played Wolf Creek in Mesquite NV and The Ranch is way more challenging. The first thing they ask you when you check in, "Did you bring a lot of balls because you're are going to to lose at least one ball a hole." They were right. There is no driving range or net to warm up in, just a putting green. Part of the problem is there are no maps or range distances at each of the tee boxes or on the score card. . The course is in very rough shape. Sand traps are washing away, no sand in many of them. Fairways were extremely muddy. The exterior of the golf course rough is not maintained and a fire hazard. Back nine plays easier. Restrooms were not clean.
Full rate for run-down course
We were charged the full senior rate for a course that is falling apart. The "driving range" (a net cage) blew down in a storm and has not been replaced. The greens were plugged and also so severely damaged that large portions were not playable. Fairways had been dug up by wild pigs and deeply rutted by tractors. The bunkers had sand only in the flat bottom portions; the sides were just mud and tufts of grass. Even the signs were rusting, peeling, and partly unreadable. See photos.
The new management is apparently planning to go out of business. Nobody will want to come back after playing here once. We saw several maintenance workers, but they are nowhere close to keeping up with what the course needs.

What's with course maintenance
The greens are a mess..putting sand on a bald spot is not the answer..And the bunkers..half sand, half dirt.
Finally..please hire someone to re=program the irrigation system...wasting water...and dry areas.
For some chalengers
Great course lay out but get ready to get your ego CRUSH because this course will destroy you it you will want more because it is challenging its addictive, some green is badly damaged but who care getting onto the green is already a challenge, good luck
will never play there again, there were dead areas on every Green on the course no sand in the sand bunkers and weeds growing out of the bunkers basically the course is in very poor condition. Will not recommend this to anyone else and I won't be playing there anymore.
Playing at The Ranch
Even with discount from GolfNow this course is way over priced because of the poor conditions of most of the course.
Some greens big dirt spots on a large part of the greens. Most sand traps were in terrible condition with lots of weeds and dirt. Some tee boxes were in poor condition. Most of the fairways were in playable condition. Will only go back if fees drop.
Position golf
This very hilly, challenging course forces the mid handicapper to shed the driver in favor or the 3 wood, 3 iron and an array of rescue Cubs. Many elevated tees and narrow fairways force a thoughtful game. A number of false fronts can fool you and leave you short. Whils some of the greens need a bit of work, the course is in good shape and lovely vistas of south San Jose's hills always provide a smile. I recommend this course to all who want to improve their accuracy. It forces it upon you.
Normal Ranch Challenge
I love the challenge of The Ranch, its the highest rated slope in the Bay Area and deserves its rating.
The course maintenance has been better lately, the greens still have a few bad spots, but they are getting better all the time. I believe they either got salty sand or overdid fertilizer a couple of months ago, but now the place is looking good. Almost all the sand traps now have sand in the bottoms, compared to NONE that is a big improvement. Even the brown and bare spots in the fairways are now nearly all gone.
We played at a nice pace today, we teed off near 12:00 noon and didn't see anyone for the entire round except for a twosome that we let play through on the 12th hole. One of our group lost more than a dozen balls as he is not consistent off the tee. That is so very important at this course. I do not recommend the course to anyone under a 15 handicap, you will just be very frustrated if you cannot keep the ball in play.
Terrible green condition
The course layout is interesting, and I had fun. Hiwever, the green is in terrible condition. The worst I ever played.
Great layout, difficult but enjoyable course
I live nearby and play here often, but only when I can get a good deal. The normal price is to high for any course in the area, that said, you can get discounts here almost every day.
The course is too hard for most players, you must be straight and accurate to score well here. I have seen many players use a dozen balls if they are all over the place.
Amazing but Challenging Course
This course was absolutely beautiful. The views were amazing. The course was in great condition. It is a very challenging course where you can lose a lot of balls but an enjoyable course to play. Just know going in that you're going to lose a few balls and you won't be as frustrated during your round. Definitely not for beginners.
Hot day so was my putter!!!
Hot sunny friday the greens were as challenging as I last played here but this time the flat stick was working well. They have cut down a lot of the wild grass/plants around the fairways which helped me. A couple greens were in disrepair not sure what the cause. No wind that afternoon. Carts worked great, tried a $5 buck can of bud light and thirst quenched. Back nine was harder due to heavy smell of WEED in the air!!! My guess is a grow house nearby, one way to pay for that monster mortgage i guess..lol. Be back soon!
Golf course conditions
I just played Aug 10th, Thursday and was very very disappointed with the green conditions. Almost all greens have spots all over and how I wish the people working in the pro shops is honest enough to say something about the condition of the Greens. For the price, $80 - $100 is not worth it.
Erich
Challenge !
Disappointed in the condition of the course for such a high green fee. Was able to get the fee for $50.00 but course wanted $100.00. Not worth $100.00. Grass in the bunkers. Some greens not in good shape.
A challenging course but able to shoot a decent score.
Wish course was in better shape!
Very disappoint with the conditions of the greens, almost all greens have ugly spots and considering they want $80/player. I played Aug 10th... I wish the people work in the pro shop say something about the green conditions.
Shenanigans with my buddies on my birthday.
My time at the Ranch was fine the only issue no drink cart. I say this because the course is spread out and it would be nice to have a cart going around the course with drinks to offer. My other issue when I left my Volkey S6 grind 56 and no body happen to return it. Funny I waited for the cart to come typo the end but they swiftly went to the cart return center. Second time so Far and I misplaced one of my costco 2 rounds for 69.99 at the bar. Sorry for ranting but the course was fine but some holes can get some love like 13, 14, 15, and 17. This course can be great again if someone would just put in the effort and listen to customers.
Hit hard and putt it through the cup
Great views, tough, poor conditions
Great views and layout but not for your average golfer as there are a lot of long carry shots required, not only from tee but also the approach. A number of greens in bad shape as someone's been playing with the aerator. Not going back there for a while.
I played here yesterday and it's one of my favorite courses. Unfortunately, it seems to be the favorite of the wild boar in South SJ. Thye've been tearing things up out there again. Sad to see but as you said, interesting course layout and fun!
