Hard Rock Golf Club Riviera Maya
About
The Hard Rock Golf Club Riviera Maya (formerly known as The Golf Club at Playacar) offers the perfect combination of natural beauty and the work of man. This magnificient golf course, carved out of the dense Mayan Jungle is only a few hundred yards away from the crystal-clear, turquoise ocean and the fine white sands of the Mexican Caribbean Sea.
The intelligent architectural design of the golf course has converted Playa del Carmen into one of the most popular tourism destinations in all of Mexico.

probably closer to a 3.5 for everything outdoors.. 5 for everything indoors
the staff in the restaurant / bar, and the staff working in the pro shop were all 5-star friendly and helpful, and the food and drinks were awesome.. I did like that everything was all-inclusive with the cost of the round..
the staff outside was fine, I suppose, just not overly friendly.. the course was in good shape, and I'd say moderately challenging (I shot about 102 from the Blues, which is average for me)..
for the value, and for the ease of getting to/from the ferry, I would definitely recommend this course to anyone staying over on the Cozumel island like I did
Nice course. Golf clubs needed upgrades. We wasn’t impressed at all with the clubs
Many dog legs, so drive’s off the tee have to be precise.
If you do not know the course, first time is challenging, but really enjoyable.
Bring Golf Balls
This is a beautiful course for the price we paid. It was our first time playing in another country so we didn't know what to expect. They treated us very well and for a small tip the cart girl was very attentive. We didnt bring our clubs so we had to rent. Clubs were $50 and they were some pretty nice ones. My only complaint would be the price of golf balls. The cheapest ones they offered were $16 per sleeve. With the amount of jungle and water traps this course had to offer you will lose some golf balls so I would recommend bringing your own of going shopping before you head to the course.
Nothing Straight
Very challenging course. Almost every hole turns and has small greens. Some very beautiful holes with dry cenotes and others with water features. Golfnow.com saves $20+ over booking through the course.
Course was nice, food was sub par and drinks were very light. Course played well although make sure to keep your ball in the fairway cause it’s easy to lose them even in the rough. Tough course but the golf was fun
Quick Golf Round in Playa de Carmen
We rented a house for the week in Playacar community where the Hard Rock Golf course is located. We did not plan on playing but we had a free day so I book a round for my son and I. To my surprise the green fees included breakfast, lunch, range balls, cart, and all the drinks. What a value. I haven't come across many courses that include all this especially the drinks. The course was in good shape. Tee boxes were flat, fairways were like hitting off of matts, and the greens were decent. I do think the greens need some work. The have some bare spots like some of our local courses in central Texas after a bad winter freeze. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We rented clubs from them at $50 per set. Clubs were fairly new with most of the sets being Callaway Maverick and Odessey putters. No balls included. Bring balls because they charge $14-$18 per sleeve. This is a very tight and unforgiving course for those that stray from the fairways. There is thick jungle down both sides so if you go over the cart path or roll of the fairway your ball is most likely gone. Lots of bunkers on nearly every hole. Hole 4 is a par 3 that is really hard to hit. Very tiny green lodged between bunkers and it slops every which way. It gets hot fast so try to tee off early. There weren't many groups playing so they let us go off about 30 minutes before our scheduled tee time. I would recommend this course to anyone that is staying in Playa or near it.
Better than expected
Not sure where all the negativity came from. Course lay out is pretty challenging (narrow fairways and blind spots) yet fun. Service staff was incredibly, cart personnel were so accommodating with ice, drinks, water, cigars. This course is all inclusive which was nice! Negatives were that greens still needed more healing but doable to play, Carts don’t have gps but I used my phone app so no big deal. And yes they open at 7am so people were waiting outside the door. Tips bring your own golf balls, gloves, laser, shoes. Also, try to get out before 8am so the heat doesn’t kick your butt. Overall I’d definitely come back.
Bring Strategy and Balls
Course was great and challenging. The advice i’d give to vacationers is to bring all your stuff from home. Everything was overpriced. Sleeve of precepts were $16, golf glove was $40, club rentals were just ok. This course is not forgiving. Anything a foot out of bounds is lost and water is set up with black tarps so balls on edge are lost there as well. Play the blues if you are decent on drives.
Bring your clubs and plenty of balls and all will be great. Plenty of beers and food.
Very nice course
The all inclusive round was worth the money. Very very friendly staff as well. The extras at the pro shop were very pricey. Bring your own balls and T’s.
Second time - still unfortunate
This was my second time here. Despite my optimism, it was identical to the first. The sad thing is that it’s a combination of avoidable errors, and they just won’t button it up.
We played a similarly priced track two days prior, which was great. Both courses, we got a 7:45 reservation. For the other place, we got picked up at 6:45. That works. 10-15 minutes there, 20-30 minute warm up, and you’re off. Not so with Hard Rock. They had a 5:45 pick up. This is because of a 30 minute detour to pick up other golfers. A bit irritating at this price point.
We finally arrive at about 6:45. Fine. But now you just wait outside because the staff doesn’t show up until after 7 (just like before). They finally open and we get checked in only to discover the driving range is closed. Breakfast is pretty minimal, but it is there.
The golf carts are absolute garbage. They look like crap and are in obvious disrepair. Several were abandoned throughout the course and ours died mid-round as well.
The course itself has a pretty nice layout and the staff is pretty good on average. You just have to look past the fact that this should be under $100. It’s not a resort course.
Not what you expect for an International Resort
Amount of staff was not adequate for a Saturday. Had to wait at register to check in almost 20 minutes. Then had to wait almost 30 minutes for Range Balls. The Range Balls were the oldest Golf Balls I have hit in 15 years. Then had to wait for a Golf Cart to start the Round. If you really want to be pampered and play a Beautiful course in Riviera Maya, double your spend and go play Mayakoba.
Decent for what you pay - not the prettiest that would be expected
Bring your own golf balls!!!! Shop prices are ridiculous.
It was close by me
Course has too many dog legs, balls are overly expensive, and the staff is pretty strict when it comes to renting clubs. When in Mexico tho…
Too many doglegs
There are a few good holes but for the most part every tee shot is about the same distance. From the whites, around 220 yards plus or minus 10-15 yards, then it doglegs left or right. All the fairways are really narrow with around 40 yards from jungle on the left to jungle on the right. Greens are tiny as well. Bermuda grass with grain influencing most putts, chips and shots from off the fairway. Lots of bunkers throughout the course as well. There is a good chance you’ll have to hit many greenside and fairway sand shots.
Put your driver away and plan to hit a lot of straight shots and it is a getable course. But if you leave the fairway and end up in the trees the penalty strokes will add up quickly.
Course is ok and it is great that all the on course and on course food and beverage is included in the greens fee. Staff was wonderful as well.
Challenging and can easily become frustrating due to balls out of play and plenty of chucked shots around the greens.
It's..... ok
Look if you can swing a round at PGA or Myakoba, play there. But if you have no other alternative but Hard Rock, play it. Course is really tight and has crazy dog legs, but was is great shape. Some tee boxes are slopped far too much, but 90 percent were good. Greens are TINY but are in great shape. On to some stuff I can't get over... tee time was 745 showed up at 7am. Club house was still closed. No driving range until 8am, which is terrible. The golf carts are tragic. There is one restroom, which the club house didn't tell me you need to use the golf cart key to get into. The starter decided too send off 4 groups of 2 instead of 2 foursomes which grounded play to screening stop. Drink cart made frequent stops which was great. Seriously, for 135 bucks, play somewhere else or just don't play, it's not worth it.
It's.... ok
Like many reviews, it's a TIGHT course with TINY greens. For 30 bucks more should have played PGA though. Got to the course 45 min before my start and the range wasn't open, not ideal coming off a plane flight the night before. The starter decided to send 4 twosomes out instead of groups of 4, which actually slowed the round to a hault. Some tee boxes are really slopped but in great shape. The golf carts are antiques. The drinks cart makes frequent stops. The pro shop is tragic. Honestly if it's the ONLY place you can get on, I guess go ahead and play, but I'd try and play anywhere else before going here.
