Gillette Ridge
About
Gillette Ridge Golf Club in Bloomfield, just outside of Hartford, is an Arnold Palmer Signature course. It is one of the toughest rounds in all of New England. The course sprawls across a beautiful landscape covered with natural wetlands and forests of towering maples, oaks, and elm trees. There are strategically placed bunkers in addition to the natural challenges but they are not excessive. The wetlands come into play on almost half of the holes at Gillette Ridge Golf Club. The approaches to the greens are seemingly intimidating but as long as you don't hit short there is always bailout area on one side. Since each hole presents a unique challenge, there is not just one signature hole, but one of the most memorable holes is the par-5 second, a true risk-reward test that requires both length and accuracy.

The sixth, 173, 3-par: The long slender green, obliquely set to the tee, is a common feature at Gillette. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

The ninth green: par 4, 405, but the blues were set at 440 today. A murderously tough golf hole. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

Eleven: par 5, 500. Another strong driving hole, with the Heublein Tower as part of the backdrop. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

Gillette Ridge's drivable par-4 13th is an excellent hole. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/08/2017

The 16th green at Gillette Ridge shows the course is consciously shrinking the putting surfaces, presumably for ease of maintenance. I wish they wouldn't do this - it makes an already hard course even tougher and will slow pace of play. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/08/2017

Ctgolfer
Everyone from pro shop to the starter to the cart girl were outstanding. Pace was just around 4 hrs for 18. Can’t say enough good things about this day. Thanks Gillette. Will surely play again
Some what Surprised
I was very surprised to find the course in pretty darn good condition after reading a couple of negative reviews. I did get a Hot Deal and used a $10 reward to get the $33 greens fee. I found the fairways and greens
in great shape. All of the traps were filled with sand and recently raked. The only thing I saw that someone might complain about was the edges of holes where grass had grown very long was recently cut down to six or inches. I like this course and will play it many more times this summer.
Riding recommended, but awesome experience
Ended up walking 10 miles due to stubborn friends and too many lost balls (my fault) but the course is in immaculate condition and very challenging but fun layout. Definitely bring your A game
Play on the weekdays
Weekend rounds at $105 are far from being a value. We played at $35 each for 18 with a cart. Course is a 6.5/10. Bunkers need slot of work and greens are still healing from early season aeration.
Used to be so good…. But
Used to be so good….
Played many rounds here over the years and this is the first time I was genuinely concerned for the shape the course is in. I get we had some rain the past couple of weeks, but other courses I played were fine so I assumed as such.
But a huge reason why I’m giving this a one star is because I had wrote about my experience in a Facebook group for golfers in CT.
Apparently the manager didn’t take that feedback very well and decided to call me. Sure he was giving me an explanation as to why the conditions were the way they were but then he proceeded on telling me that I can’t write things like that.
Didn’t know I wasn’t allowed to post honest feedback where others can see it.
Where it gets funnier is he assumed because I’m “young” that’s why I did that… but I’m 40 so there goes that.
Honestly, to be hounded like that and told that I can’t write reviews about them where others can see is actually quite ridiculous.
It was also extremely condescending on his part which I don’t appreciate and quite frankly, just inappropriate.
The real kicker is me paying $38 dollars for a “championship course”. Yes the layout is great but if the conditions were near championship level, I would happily pay more than that,
But thankfully between the course being in rough shape and the manager inappropriately calling me to complain about a review I wrote where others agreed with me.
Makes it a lot easier for me never to want to go back.
This surely deserves no stars. In his words “ we don’t need your business” … well feeling is mutual.
Great Course
I play a lot of different courses and meet up with new people. Someone told me I had to play this course.
Tee to Green a grate course.
Staff was very friendly from the gentleman that load our bags on the cart to the gentleman that cleaned our clubs after the round.
Young man behind the counter when I checked in was very professional and polite.
My wife and I went in to purchase a shirt after the round and the gentleman was very friendly.
We spoke with him for a short time before we left.
Bunkers unplayable
Not worth the money with the bunkers being in the condition they’re in.
Conditions were not good
Golf course was in ok shape considering it was April but the greens were awful. Bunkers were mud like consistency. Not what I expected for that kind of price point.
Green need help
The course is good except for the greens. Looks like they arerated last year and they have not recovered. Need to be sanded or something. Very very very bumpy and inconsistent. Love the place but come on man.
