Golf Advisor: Top 25 Courses for Pace of Play in the U.S. (2017 #17)
Reviews
Course & surrounding area undergoing change.
Pecan Lakes is one of the most interesting in the vicinity of College Station, Texas. Course is always in top condition. Club house upgrade underway.
Sand Greens
My Dad had told me about playing sand greens when he was a kid, but I had never played sand greens until yesterday. Got to play 6 or 7 sand (or dirt) greens. And pay full price for the privilege.
Good Layout
Played the course mid-day due to cooler-temps. Nice little layout...no frill clubhouse. Due to hard freeze a few weeks ago the Bermuda grass was brown & the greens were thin...no over-seeding for winter. Well worth the drive from College Station.
Great play
A fun course to play. Not overly challenging, but rewarding for good shots. Course in good shape for this time of year. Will definitely play again.
A hidden gem for sure!
I love this course layout. The grass in the rough tends to be VERY tall so I recommend staying on the fairway, but the fairways and greens are well groomed. I play here fairly regular and enjoy it every time!
Great Rates
Great rates and the staff is incredible.
hot deal
Course is in good condition. Rough is thick and looking for balls took some extra time. Air conditioner needs to be turned on. :-)
Great time
I really enjoy playing at Pecan Lakes, I would not say it is an easy course but it is forgiving. The staff are always accommodating and very friendly. The course was in great shape and the putting greens were pure. I played with three of my buddies and we had a fantastic time. I would recommend this course to anyone who is interested in playing there.
Worth every penny
They have put in some work on the course over the past months and it shows. Fairways, rough, greens were in great shape. Even in 100* weather course green and plush. Fun layout, challenging too!!!!
Good, but conditions slipping
We played on a Sunday afternoon. Not many people on the course. The greens have slipped quite a bit from the last time I played there. Pretty bumpy and patchy. Maybe too much rain over the last 18 months. Hopefully they will get better.
Overall the course is still enjoyable. They do keep large patches of uncut tall grass as hazards. I'm not sure why they choose to do this. Some of it is low lands, but on the whole it made the course harder than I think it needed to be. Maybe a bit contrived.
On the whole, it seems the course is not getting played that much and may be suffering from a reduced maintenance budget. But it is still good - for what we paid, it was a good deal.
Tee Boxs were Bad, Greens the Worst..
Some Tee Boxes had not been mowed in weeks, Greens had NO grass on them. BAD, NOT WORTH THE MONEY TODAY..
Second worse course I've ever played
This is the second worse course conditions I've ever played. I usually tee it up 50-60 times a year and take a couple trips every year and have played nearly every course in the Houston area. Clover and dandelions were very prevelant throughout and the greens, were the poorest I've ever seen. There were a couple good fairways but that was it. The staff was very friendly and would be a nice place if the conditions were better but I won't be back.
Hate to have to write this review
I really like this course. Layout requires accuracy, & rewards accurate length. Generally quiet surroundings, except when small airport is busy next to hole 3 & 4 - kind of a hoot. Conditions were good for late March, given the roller-coaster weather.
Having said all that, it will likely be some time before I return. Really bad experience with the woman that checked us in. Our 2-some arrived 30 minutes early, so no rush on our part. No one crowded clubhouse. Initially good chit-chat with her. Then we gave her the tee reservation print-out, and her mood switched. While waiting for the check-in computer to access the right program, she told us the pre-paid rate was either for one person 18 holes or 2 golfers for only 9 holes. When I told her we had made the reservation on Pecan Lakes web site & asked her to check the printed res vs. the course computer program, she defiantly told me "do not get an attitude, because I can require you to leave". Not sure if that would have involved Navasota PD or the Sheriff's office, but I didn't want to find out. She fussed and complained for several more minutes while we waited silently in case there was a verdict in our favor from the computer program. I was looking up the GolfNow support phone number to call for a refund so we could leave, when she announced that their computer verdict was "OK, your rate is good for 2 for 18 holes..." Then with no apology, she went on to tell us chapter & verse how we had one of the 2 tee time deals they have each day &, blah blah blah. So if she new all that now, why so much grief before? We took the cart key and left the clubhouse.
If I had driven the 30+ miles to play there and was by myself, I would have left without playing, probably said something I shouldn't have, and contacted Golfnow when safely off-site for a refund. My one regret is I didn't get her name so that I can make sure I never play there again when she is to be on duty.
Dry as a bone
For $44 per person this was a shadow of what has been. The course is links style but due to lack of watering, most of the rough are weeds. The greens were the worst with a smattering of poa annua trying to survive. The greens were mostly dirt and it was like putting on asphalt. Previously I never wanted to return after a rude group of ten were allowed to slow the pace of play. Now I will never return because this coarse is not worth the drive or the green fee.
Fun layout, I shall return.
This course was interesting to play, but very windy on a bright, sunny day in January. I will make it back when the grass grows better.
Great course for the money.
Had a great time, could not finish because of rain. Overall a great course.
Great course. Friendly staff. Good rate
Great course. Friendly staff. Great rate. Greens suffering from recent heavy rains.
Great except for sand
The course is in good shape considering the weather. It is well watered and the greens run true. The only problem is the sand that has been used in the sand traps. It is construction sand that would be used in concrete, not sand that is usually on a golf course. It is very deep and hard to cut through.
