Wished I check reviews first and it's a shame to see such a well designed course fall apart
Here on business and love to play the best courses in the region. See it's a Greg Norman design with changing elevation and think it's a winner. Get there and I am not a guy who needs a cherry cabinet locker room so seeing a modular pro shop and restaurant bar was not a big deal to me as others mentioned.
Pros
1. Amazing design, views, elevation changes and layout
2. Challenging course but no real tricked up holes and some very challenging greens and long par 4s
3. Lots of potential to be 4 star course with money
Cons
1. In it's current condition, they should be ashamed charging more than $20 for a round of golf here. And let me be clear this is NOT WINTER DAMAGE!
2.course condition is beyond terrible it's a goat ranch and they have eaten on this range for years. Once I get to the cart, I start to see the fairways are rough, then get to the putting green and see that greens are aerated. Get to the tee box and it is spotted with dead grass and dirt spots. It continued throughout the course. There were parts of the fairways and tee boxes that have some really nice bent grass but you can see that the course has struggled to keep it going. Bunkers are not edged and it's not simple winter over growth but just a failure to take care of the course. You can see wash out areas where the plastic mesh is exposed and along the greens you see edging that should never be exposed creeping to the surface.
3. Learned its bank owned so it's an asset to them , but they are only putting the minimum into it to keep it as a diamond in the rough until someone with cash saves it. Plus learned they have had 3 superintendents in 3 years, that doesn't help. Plus I guess the course was built before the housing bubble burst and was originally private and with no additional houses and members coming in started the downward spiral.
4. It truly is such a shame to see such a great course fall apart
Stone Canyon - Great layout, horrible condition
I have played this course several times in the past, but the current conditions were the worst I've seen. I got a great deal through GolfNow, but would otherwise choose another course to play. The superintendent has his work cut out for himself.
Great Course
Nice to catch a red flag deal for Stone Canyon. Although we had a lengthy snow delay (our fault for booking with snow in forcast), the course played great. Wish the tee boxes were open on the upper level on number 11.
This course has potential...
This could be a nice fun course. I don't think the owner is investing back into the place. It was 70° with no drinking water anywhere, some of the fairways where in bad condition and construction sites left in limbo. Definitely has potential but for the money they want I would recommend a "real" clubhouse instead of that trailer with one bathroom and better upkeep on the track.
Go Play! This course has great features that very entertaining
A great test for all skill levels. I played it forward at the bronze tees. The carry to reach the fairway was fair to me but could be a problem for those who could not carry 200 yards off this tee.
Scenic views.
The course has scenic views and the layout of the greens is really good. Some greens are really challenging but the extended greens make it easy to chip.
winter golf
60 degrees. ... In January. ... Well done stone canyon
Advice
I am a golf nut, but do not enjoy playing golf when tee grounds and greens are frozen.
Pretty course with great greens
Was a great looking course, with wonderful bent grass fairways. The greens were in amazing condition, great speed, and a good difficulty to read and putt. The course looks fairly open but balls not on the fairway are hard to find in the rough even though there are few trees or woods to worry about.
Interesting holes. Great use of natural bluffs and terrain.
Played from the tips on a windy day. Fairways had some areas that needed attention, but the greens were fantastic for this time of year. Other than a few spots in the fairway, from tee to green the course was in excellent condition. The layout pinches in just the right spots to make it difficult to place drives. Each tee shot needs to be thought through in order to set up a proper appriach shot.
Fried fairways
Great layout, poorly maintained. Bunkers hadn't been raked all weekend. Fairways were pretty horrible. I hope they come back strong in the spring.
Course condition
Course was in aweful condition. Not much grass in fairways. Greens and tee boxes in rough shape.
Stone Canyon in fall
This course has a beautiful layout and makes good use of the terrain. Playing here in the fall means after a lot of people have played through the summer. Greens were in good shape and extremely challenging. Fairways showed a lot of wear and tear and we're slightly burned up. Most of the course is very well maintained. It seemed like you could get into trouble on a lot of the tee shots which made it fun and challeneging.
Would be wonderful with the proper attention.
Would be wonderful with a little attention. No walking here.
Nice layout, large greens, plenty of sand.
Fairways need major improvement, tee boxes need re-sodded, carts are junk and in dis-repair.
Positive note; the greens are in great condition, the new clubhouse is nice, and good practice area.
Only play it if you find a good rate! Under $40.
This is one of Kansas City's best courses, but
Used to be one of the nicest courses around, but I'm fearful that the lack of attention will be what kills this course.
This course is in bad shape 2013
Not sure why this top 3 rated course was in such bad condition, but my associate and I scored big w/ golfnow and found a $19 1:50pm. I would have asked for a refund if I had paid the regular rate of $59 as the fairways were in TERRIBLE shape. Greens were not too bad but still for $60 I expect MUCH more. All in all it was a wonderful day of golf and I'm glad I played.
Poor Course conditions
Very poor fairway conditions as it seems they are dealing with disease or some other issue. Tee shots into the fairway should not end up with the lies that I ended up with. The course sent me off in the middle of a tournament so I ended up with a 5+ hour round as a single....
Stone Canyon
Challenging course, tough and very fast greens. Course was not in very good shape!
