Has gone downhill
In the past at least 5 years this course has went down tremendously. Fairways have weeds 2 ft tall. 3 to 4 tee boxes have more sand then grass on them. All of the sand bunkers have turned into weed bunkers. Some of the greens are pretty bad shape. The city owns the course and it is ridiculous how much tax payers money is spent on keeping this place a float. Last, the older manager working there has a terrible attitude towards players who make mistakes while playing . Only positive i would say is the younger employees do a good job with customers.
Beautiful Hidden Gem
I was looking for a nice course to play on my way from STL to Baton Rouge. Dogwood's reviews sounded good. I lucked out! What a spectacular course! Tucked back in a state park next to Lake Grenada (and nothing else; no houses, just nature) it's almost too nice. It makes it hard to concentrate on your game. Woods & trees separate each hole so you can only see the hole you're on. Bring your long driver because there are many "forced carries" over tall grasses, lakes, etc. Only the bunker situation kept this course from being perfect.
(My car's GPS took me on a very nice short route to the course only to discover the road was close due to high water. I called was told another route that wound through the woods.)
This course is a lot of fun to play, and with a little work, it could be one of the best in the state. The biggest problem they've got right now is that the bunkers are all washed out down to the gravel. It's pretty hard to open a wedge up wide enough to slide down into sun-baked gravel. Fixing that probably isn't cheap (especially for a municipal course), but it would make a world of difference.
Another thing that needs to be done is to set up an intermediate set of tees. Right now, the whites run about 6,500 yards, and the next set of tees runs about 5,800 yards. That disparity is ridiculous. Setting up some tees at about 6,200 yards would enhance playability and would cost next to nothing.
A handful of greens had some burnout issues, but that has to be expected, given how hot this summer has been (even by Mississippi standards). The bunkers are the biggest issue. Still, this is a great course. It would really be something to see in the fall or spring.
Great course for a great value. The staff was wonderful. It was a great way to spent part of our vacation time!
Birthday on the Links
We had a great time (wife & I) on this course. MS Hot sun, nice course, speed of play was perfect, friendly staff terrific hot dogs, a few cold brews and great value.
Early Season Sunday
Great place bring your buddies and play. The greens and fairways are in great condition and require a game plan, it's a good idea to scope out some of the fairways before teeing off blindly. This is not an open range course, each hole is its own secluded piece of real estate lined with pines. This is a great place to bring your loud partners and not disturb nearby players. The course is challenging but has a beautiful layout and full of wildlife. Deer are common and are your spectators at times. There are plenty of bunkers and they are large and deep. My only complaint would be that the bunkers were not maintained but that is common on most course and we were playing early in the season after many rains.
I gladly drive 45 minutes to play Dogwoods whenever I can. It's a very pretty course that offers a challenge but is not overly difficult. Unfortunately 90% of the bunkers need to be reworked. Most have been washed out for quite a while and are peppered with rocks. Driving range and putting greens are well kept. I'll continue playing there.
