Great View from 18 tee Photo submitted by Craig4999006 on 09/04/2016
Great course that keeps getting better!
Skytop has improved with every visit. You will find the best greens in Centre County, great fairways and a very nice layout. It is a challenge for golfers of all levels, with a high risk reward. If you keep it in the fairway on your tee shots, you will have a run at a good score, but if you don't you will pay the price. Beautiful day, abundant wildlife and very friendly staff make for a great fall afternoon. Played 18 holes in under 3.5 hours.
Great Course and Value
We have played Skytop a few times each year since relocating to the Happy Valley. There has been consistent improvement and the round we played yesterday - we found the course in outstanding condition. We have played every course within 30 miles of State College, and this is by far in the best overall condition, the greens are incredible and the fairways are in great condition. If you miss a fairway you have to scramble - and but that is the name of the game. We enjoy playing here because of the helpful nature of the staff. Carts are all new, and the little touches that make a course great have been added each year. Not a single complaint - and great value for the money. We will be back again often!
Still enjoy the course. Has Golf Boards now.
I'm a fan of mountain courses so I don't agree with some other reviews. I really enjoy is course. Between the numerous elevated tee boxes that will tire your legs out if playing the blues, and the rocks adding depth to the views, I appreciate the course. Keeping a mountain course maintained is a challenge due to water run off and vegetation challenges. I think they do a fine job and don't hide the areas built to direct water thru a fairway.
I first played last year and returned when vacationing to play it twice this week. They have the Golf Boards and I used it during one round. For five extra bucks it's worth the fun to rent them.
It's been a very dry summer in most of Pennsylvania. Farmers are hurting and the maintenance crew did a good job. I didn't have any dry hard lies, but like last year, when off the fairways it was not as good.
The course plays shorter from the tee boxes when comparing white's to white's with other courses. That's intentional because you need to hit your shots or be in the woods or some ravine or brush placed to make you think.
Greens rolled consistent. Tee boxes were in decent shape. You will get some uneven lies but in general the fairways a flat for a mountain course,
Staff was friendly, club house still a small temporary building. Others who complained wanting alcohol must golf for reasons other then mine. If that matters for you maybe ask if you can bring your own. if allowed they'll let it.
No complaints from me about the course. I continue to enjoy the course a lot.
Perfect Day on a fun Golf Course
We had perfect weather and and excellent experience. Staff was exceptionally friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. Fun layout through the mountains with some real challenges mixed with some fairly straightforward holes. Greens were not exceptionally fast but rolled smoothly. Course uses the surrounding terrain to create a layout that means each hole is fairly unique. Our first experience on golfboards was a lot of fun! Definitely a unique experience compared to walking or regular carts!
Poor conditions and rocks everywhere
Was very disappointed with this course. Pace of play was terribly slow close to 5 hours. There are many large rocks in play and even in the fairways under the sod. I hit three rocks that day damaged my clubs!
Also greens didn't roll smooth or consistent. Many unfixed ball marks too.
Tee boxes aren't level. Ball is either above or below your feet on the tee!
Club house is clean but nothing in it. Just some old hot dogs that have been rolling all day
Don't was your time here or damage your clubs!
Good price but burnt out fairways and no off course amenities, 5 hour round, NO WATER or Beverage cart on entire course. No beer in clubhouse either,
let's start with that it was cheap, disappointed in the reviews that said it was a well maintained course. I had one of my best rounds ever but ALL of the fairways were burnt out. could not put my tee into the ground on most of the tee boxes (although they were well groomed). The greens were all well maintained but I'd say inconsistent speeds. Moderate to fast. Course layout was good, it's a mountain course so tee shots in middle of fairway would occasionally run off. interesting course...no beverage cart or water coolers on entire course...bring your beverage of choice and there is no beer to buy in club-trailer.
Next time in the area I'm going to skip this course.
Superintendent is clearly working to make improvements
Every time we play here the course shows improvement. They are closing in the ditches and cutting back trees and brush.
Hidden Gem
I love Skytop. It's an unassuming course right outside of town (10 minutes really!). It's a beautiful and difficult course. The staff is truly second to none--they do their absolute best to ensure that your experience is second to none. Conditions are great, carts are gas powered and function without any issue. It's a surprisingly difficult course with steep angles and hazards everywhere. It's my favorite course in State College and I've played them all.
Beautiful course, friendly staff
First time venturing past Penn State Blue and White and Toftrees. Not far from State College and well worth the trip. Some of the best looking holes I've ever played.
Well maintained, friendly staff, great value
I was vacationing in the area and chose to play here after reading good reviews in golf advisor. It was a good choice.
The staff is super friendly and helpful. I stopped by the day prior to ensure I could find it and found the people I spoke with that day and the next all customer focused. They earnestly wanted you to be comfortable.
Since they bought the course in 2012 you can tell they are spending all spare money on course upkeep and the temporary buildings are clean and functional. If they build a new clubhouse with dining facilities, I'd definately seek it out given the previous comments about their customer service.
The greens were wonderful. They all rolled the same speed from practice green through number 18. They were a bit fast but I'm fine with that when they run consistent. I chose to roll some shots onto the green when I felt holding long shots may not work.
The fairways were cut low and in good shape. The tee boxes were in perfect shape. I played the blue's which required walks up to the elevated tees, giving you really sweet views of the hole and surrounding trees.
All the holes stood on their own, meaning no fairways came together and no dodging balls from other players. Of course it is a mountain course and the trees make it nearly impossible to do that and the fact that the course was hardly busy. I like assessing each hole by itself and not seeing others as often as I would on other courses,
The costs are less than many others on the area. Driving range was good.
They handed me a course guide so I could read up on each hole, which was nice to have before teeing it up. Helped me decide on clubs and avoid obvious things.
My GPS doesn't pick up the new name, but the staff told me to use the old name which worked. I will get the name wrong but it starts with a T.
The other thing I liked was their focus on beautiful water control, for lack of a better word. On a mountain course there run off and other notable issues for mountain courses. They used rocks to frame and support the areas making it attractive but also easy to see to you don't accidentally roll a long shot into an overgrown mess you can't hit out of.
The only area needing a recommendation is the rough. It was splotchy on some holes, but it is a mountain course and it wasn't on all holes.
You should give the course a try. I'll go again...
Well worth the trip
Was passing through the State College, PA area and couldn't get a time on the Penn State Courses. Called Skytop Mountain, got a early time and had a fantastic day with my son on a great course. Beautiful views, great condition, friendly staff, who could ask for more.
Will go back again
Played the course late October last year. Nobody on the golf course but myself ( I guess late in October the Nittany Lions are putting their clubs away) and played it in about 2 hours. Excellent course for that time of the year. Terrific views especially off 16th.
Will go back again and I have recommended the course to all my Canadian friends.
It has good greens. There are several outstanding holes. The course had a great staff working the proshop.
The course had great greens. They were in excellent shape. We thought number 15 and 16 were outstanding holes. The course had good carts. The people working the proshop were friendly, helpful, and courteous. The course did a tremendous job of having the leaves cleaned up for this time of year. (Oct. 16) The course needs some cleaning up and some drains put in at some critical areas. Number 12 was extremely wet right beside the green. We also thought number 12 was a very unfair green as to holding any shots on it due to the severe tilt of the green. Fee was high for the overall shape of the course.
This course has great views
You must hit it straight. Some of the fairways are narrow. The greens are in good shape. You start off with a par 4 then ou are hit with a hit with a tricky par 5. Front nine are easy to walk back nine is more up hill.
