Patchy Greens
The Republic is normally one of the best conditioned golf courses around the city. Unfortunately, the greens on this late April round are experiencing some patchy issues. It seems as if another type of grass is invading them especially on the front 9, the back nine’s are slightly better. Some bare spots are noticeable and the other grasses cause putts to be quite bouncy. They are more than puttable, but cannot be compared to a smooth La Cantera or TPC. Fairways, tee boxes, and sand traps are great as always. Hopefully the summer treats the greens well and the course can get back to the norm with them. I teed off at the correct time and played through the first 5 holes before hitting a road block on the 6th tee. Round for a twosome was 4:22. Not horrible, but I like to see that around 4. The course layout/practice facilities are as nice as any course around town. The attendant picked me up in the parking lot. All in all, a nice round on a nice course. Normally a solid 4-5 Stars and one of the best municipal tracks in the city. I’m betting the summer months will return this course to that type of condition and ratings.
Peace in the city
The Republic transforms the area near the city to make you feel as if you are transported to peace somewhere else. Played on the customer appreciation day. Very nice of the staff to put this event on. Putting green, range, and practice area was very nice. Carts had no GPS, would be a nice added feature. Wide fairways on most holes and very well placed greens/hazards. Came into play often on par 5s/drives. Really forced either laying up or going for it. Most greens were slightly elevated. Tons of slope. Greens were putting true, but were average speed. Not overly quick, but adequate for the slope. Fairways and rough were in excellent condition. Bunkers were all taken care of well. All in all a very nice San Antonio course with a great mixture of holes. Should be able to score well with the fairways and generous greens. Very peaceful on the South side of the city.
Looking Great and In Prime Condition
We have been playing here for over 10 years and last week we received a customer appreciation
day notice at reduced rates. It seems they sold all their tee times within the first hour.
We had a 7:56 tee time and we started on time.
This golf course is in excellent condition, especially the greens.
The guys in the pro shop were friendly and energetic, it was a pleasure to be here.
They had an amazing free beer stand with Coors on tap between holes #7 and 8.
The lovely Madison was pulling pints as fast as she could and with a nice smile.
We considered doubling back for more beer but it was too busy.
It was one of those days the gods of golf allow us mortals occasionally.
At the Turn, they had great Polish sausage wrapped in a flour tortilla, a down-home Texas gourmet entree or a pulled pork Nacho.
Republic is one of the best-conditioned courses in San Antonio, and it doesn't get beat down like some of those Northside venues.
This was a great outing and it will make us want to play here more often.
These folks are only 8 minutes from Alamo Heights, if US 281 is flowing.
Great day on the links
This was my first time playing in Texas, so I wasn't sure what to expect as I'm used to desert golf. However, I found the course to be a lot of fun and featured a couple forced carries off the tee. The conditions of the greens changed on nearly every hole, as some were near perfect and others were 50% mud. For the price and friendliness of the staff I would certainly recommend the Republic to anyone looking for a nice day on the course.
Daring Greatly
From being picked up in the parking lot and dropped off back at my car every staff member I came across was helpful and accommodating. The range & practice areas had good turf & decent balls. The course is a solid layout of mix of holes, many with forced carries. Most holes are on their own, not paralleling others or bordered by house, but rather tree lined on both sides making judging the wind sometimes a challenge. The recent rains have fueled the rough to grow in and it's very dense, so finding the fairway is especially key. The greens were a little sparse with the topsoil showing through, but they still had OK roll to them.
A Very Good and Well Run Golf Course
We played early AM, it was hot and humid so we wanted to play fast and cool off. The greens are in great shape, some areas of fairways and tee boxes are burned out from the extreme heat and drought. I like the layout, it's generally fair and well thought out. Hole #5 can be daunting because it's long, and has a carry over a deep dry creek. The back nine is really different and more challenging. Hole #16 is problematic. It's a short par 4 into the wind, but you have a small landing area and trouble on the right. The green is elevated and undulated. My BW shot her career lowest round that day and she has played all the courses in San Antonio. If you are fortunate enough to get an early tee time it's fast and fun here. We were able to finish in less than 3.5 hours and never saw anyone in front or behind us. Republic is part of the Foresight operation and they always do a fine job. The starters and marshals here are very friendly. We will definitely be back here again.
One of my favorites to date
We love playing this course but it is far on the south side for us, but regardless it is very worth the drive! The droughts of years past have not effected this course as they have unlimited grey water supply so during the scorching heat of summer it is beautiful and green. The fairways are generally wide and I always have a blast playing this course it is well maintained. As of my writing this review they are not part of Golf Now network but I can hope that changes! It is worth going regardless!
