About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in Dec 2017
Cannon Ridge Golf Club sprawls across 200 acres of rolling countryside situated along the shores of the Rappahannock River. Located in historic Fredericksburg on what was once a Civil War battle site, cannon emplacements accent the course. The diverse layout wanders through dense woodlands and across bluffs and deep ravines. The scenic wetlands come into play on a few holes. The greens are small and bordered by strategically placed bunkers, but they are open in the front, making them more player friendly with hardly any forced carries. The golf course is not always forgiving, though, it is even considered one of the toughest public courses in the state. Don't be fooled by the par 3s. They may be short but they are tough. In addition to the course, Cannon Ridge Golf Club offers a large driving range as well as chipping and putting greens.

Nice Course but difficult
The course is in excellent shape (except for the gradual process of revamping the sand bunkers). The course is difficult. I marked it as "somewhat challenging," but it could almost be marked as "extremely challenging" compared to most course I play. You need to be hitting the ball fairly well to enjoy playing here. I do plan to return, but I will go into the next round knowing I will shoot above my average score. I also need to add that the staff was the friendliest I have ever met at a golf course.
Better than my expectations
Hidden jewel... Staff was friendly... Range ball part of the Tee time.... Will play again....
Hi abdullah, Thank you for the great review! We're glad we exceeded your expectations and we can't wait to have you back on the course again soon!
Amazing course...good challenge
This is a great course. The layout is great and really a challenge, lots of hills, elevation challenges and fun shots.
The Greens are very fast, fairways are perfect, the ball sits up beautifully. Some people complain about the traps, if you play them more as waste area it's fine, and the green side bunkers do have sand in them.
Excellent! Thanks for the great review Brent! Glad you enjoyed the layout and the conditions!
Great shape
Course condition great pace of play great greens are true
Would recommend if haven't played
Thanks for your review Anthony! Hope to see you out on the course again soon!
Outstanding Course
I have played this course as a foursome, two and by myself. Every time I have had an outstanding experience. From check in to the snack shop I have nothing but compliments for the staff. They went out of their way to make sure I had an outstanding experience.
Almost all the way back to being great
We played after days of hard rain and were still able to drive on the fairways. The fairways were in great shape. The ball sits up perfectly. The greens are most of the way back with only some trouble spots here and there. Most rolled very well. The bunkers are still under reconstruction and play as GUR which is actually fine with me. I've always liked this course and now that I know it is back in form, it will be in my rotation.
Thanks for the review and thank you for coming back to us! We hope to see you back again soon!
Rainy Day, empty course, and a 2 hour and 45 minute round
Golfnow Hot Deal for $25 on a Saturday at noon, could not resist checking out to see where there are with having just reopened. Played as a 2 some in 2 hours and 45 minutes, that pace will always leaving me smiling, even if I threw a good number of strokes away. Some due to operator error and some due to a very saturated course, a few plugged balls by each of us, but we managed to find them all. Fairways were terrific, like carpet for the most part, greens were mostly good, a little spotty on a few of them. All in all, this is still a good test of golf, pro shop and grill people we very accommodating also. I will be back soon and probably often
Thanks for the great review kgk1958! We're glad you enjoyed your round and can't wait to have you back again!
Fun Course to Play
This was one of my favorite courses before it closed. I played it Sept 27, and I'm putting it back on my list of favorites. Fairways were great as were most greens. Bunkers need work, which the management recognizes by making them ground under repair. Some places in the rough need to grow out more, and I expect that to happen in the spring. Will definitely play this course again.
Hello James,
We're glad to have you back on the course and can't wait to see you next time!
Thank you for your review,
Cannon Ridge Management
Hoping it continues!
I missed my opportunity to play here before it closed four years ago so I was happily surprised when it showed up on golfnow.
I decided to brave 95 and take a peek even on a rainy Monday.
Once there, based on how green the course looked, the multiple mentions from staff that no matter what, it will not be cart path only (bermuda fairways), I opted to play. I was not disappointed.
Fairways were green and mostly healthy throughout.
Greens likewise were nice with only two needing minor attention.
Rough is mostly scruffy, but in all fairness this course was down for 3 plus years. That, and the fairways are wide so playing from the rough was infrequent.
I never hit a bunker, thankfully... but the managemnt acknowledges they are poor right now and are beginning to address them (their website clearly warns players of this).
I had a typical rainy round playing alone and the course all to myself. It was fun snd yes, wet.
The course may be open, but it still demands good tee shots, solid approach shots or 2nd shot on the 5's with rolling terrain and eye for the read on putts. The greens look benign, but they have soft undulations that make putting just a bit trickier on an otherwise fair course.
I will be back, soon!
Highly recommend!
Thank you for the review and the recommendation supratbo! We can't wait to have you back on the course!
Getting Better
A work in progress restoring to a first class course. Great fairways. Greens getting better.
Thanks for your review vmahaffey!
Re-Opened ! .. & did not know
I happened to come across that the course was reopened again .. looks like the course can use some work (greens, bunkers & tee box) .. it was a great deal for the weekend rate so I can not complain about that. I'm hoping by sometime later this year or as late as summer of next year, that the course will be in very good condition .. go check it out, if you wish to save some $$$ .. Especially for the Weekend golfers!

Not bad for closed for three years.
Course opened three months ago after being closed for three years. Greens are OK but still need more work to be good. Most fairways are OK to good, the bunkers need lots of work but we were told to treat all fairway bunkers as ground under repair, and I can see why. The course layout is the same as before and I really enjoyed playing it again. In time I think it will come back if they continue to make improvements. We played it for a very low price and at that price it was worth it. I would recommend it at that price until they make some major quality changes.
Thank you for your review and noticing all of the improvements we've made!
Not worth the money right now
Have played here three times since they re-opened and my excitement to see them open again quickly wore off.
They have not done *any* work on the fairway bunkers in the last 6 weeks. Today they had one kid out there weeding a bunker by hand but I think what they fail to realize is there is NO sand in the bunkers - so what exactly are they trying to fix? They need to bring in a dozen dump trucks full or bunker sand to actually PUT in the bunkers. Weeding a hardpan bunker and trying to rake it does no good, sorry guys, its not working.
Fairways are Bermuda Lat36 and are in great shape right now. Tee boxes are close but its clear they maybe just dont have the resources right now to have guys out mowing every day because they are very shaggy. But the areas around the greens are really in poor shape. Greens are the same, they were running about a 6 today- shaggy, bare in spots and really not in good shape.
I paid $26 for a weekday round and I still think its overpriced. The course will probably be good next season and I'll wait until then to come back.
Best fairways in the region
After hearing that Cannon Ridge had opened back up this season I have been dying to go to this course to try it out. They did not disappoint. When you park there's a person that brings a cart to you and handles your bag for you and there was already a few groups out on the course and before you ride up to the first tee there is a person there to greet your group. They also make sure that each group is allowed appropriate time to set up and hit before they let another group play so that groups aren't all stacked on top of each other. A+ Service.
We played as 3 at 7:30am and we paid the GolfNow price $26 for 9-holes. Before our tee time we headed to the range for some practice swings and balls are included so no extra $$ for range balls. A+ Value.
The tee boxes were very tidy and well maintained and the fairways are some of the best in the state. The greens looked like they were recently aerated so I know that they weren't in the best of shape but still very playable. The fairway bunkers were under construction but I never hit any balls towards them anyways. A+ Course.
Definitely come try them out and play a round. Will definitely recommend to everyone!
overpriced...for now
I know they are trying, but the course is in terrible condition.
No sand in bunkers, weed and grass growing out of them, greens torn up... just not well kept up right now.
They need to lower the price.. at the price we paid, we wouldn't play again till conditions get better... just not worth it.
Needs more work
Back nine closed due to aeration. Front nine tees, fairways were in great condition. Sand traps need major attention but course just reopened so it's understandable. Hope to play again to check out the other nine.
It was great, I am coming back!
The course is in great shape. The staff was very nice and often offer to help. What sold me was the complementary practice balls. Best course so far and good prices.

Great layout..95 traffic may keep me away
Awesome playing experience. Tee boxes and fairways are excellent, greens need a little work. Some bunkers can't be played from per starter and I could see why. Overall if not for the drive in trallic (40 min drive took 2 hrs) I would play here a lot more. Glad to see it open again.
It's open!
I was very excited to find out that Cannon Ridge was open again. I was a bit disappointed in the course conditions. The fairways were immaculate, the greens were OK but are starting to show other grass infestation. The bunkers were non-existent. They all need sand. The course was still as challenging as ever but I'm worried it will close again if they don't start working on the course details and bring it back to full playing conditions.
How the mighty have fallen
I played Cannon Ridge quite frequently when it first opened several years ago. Back then, the course was a good value for the money, and was always immaculately maintained. The course now seems to have fallen on hard times. The condition of the course is rough, even considering that it is winter. The fairways are in very good shape for December, but the greens are only average and the tees are quite poor. The biggest complaint about the course is that it is simply unaffordable at normal weekend rates and is priced poorly to get the amount of play they need to generate more revenue. Seems that they need to find the revenue maximizing price point if they're going to survive. It's a shame that the course is in poor condition and is struggling to survive. It's really a good layout with only a couple of holes that aren't really very good; 11 is a "no bail-out" par 3 that could use easing up, 13-15 have been in quite poor shape the last couple of times I've been out there (both summer and winter rounds), and 16 almost forces you to hit your 3rd (par 5) into the green from a ravine that is at least 50 feet below the level of the green unless you can absolutely bomb a drive and fairway wood to get over the raving and on the level of the green. All too often, the place of play at Cannon Ridge is also poor. There will almost inevitably be one group that holds everyone up, and with no course marshaling, it becomes very frustrating. In all, I used to really love the course when it was affordable and consistently in good shape. Now, when I play it, most often I leave disappointed.
Thank you for your review! We hope you enjoyed the challenge, and hope that you will shoot lower than you think during your next time out! We're also glad to hear you enjoyed the staff!
