Vaaler Creek Golf Club
About
Conveniently located near downtown San Antonio not too far from Austin, Vaaler Creek Golf Club has a memorable layout of gently rolling hills dotted with creeks, ponds and lakes. The course begins with a challenging front nine and then eases up a bit on the back nine, but overall it is a formidable test. The greens are tricky and demanding, especially on the front nine where there are some severe slopes and undulations. The back nine greens are a bit flatter but they still require careful attention. The rolling, contoured fairways are lined with trees and there are deep bunkers strategically guarding the greens, but luckily there are only seventeen of them. Water hazards come into play throughout and there are also several doglegs and blind shots if there wasn’t enough to keep you on your toes.

Nice and easy
A few hidden surprises not shown by GPS. Otherwise, fairways and greens in good condition. From forward tees, the course appears straight forward. Lots of dog legs right.
Coming in east of Austin - be aware of the traffic lights. Never coordinated - you’lll always catch red and it will slow you down. Plus, be aware that trying to turn left on 281 is a disaster. So give yourself at least an extra hour. 290 between 71 and Dripping Springs is that congested.
Great Experience
Course is in unbelievable shape, as always. Greens were a bit slower at first but the heat helped speed things up as they dried out.
Golf
Always a must stop in the San Antonio. Playing again in two days!!
Staff
I think it was too early for the worker in the pro shop. Very short to almost rude when asked simple questions for someone’s first time playing. Told me the range was shut down so I didn’t buy range balls. Went by the practice range and many people on it, guessing members. I am not a member but I guess if I was the service would be more friendly. Great course and starters we very friendly.

Amazing shape
The course is in amazing shape especially considering the temperatures we have had over the last 5 weeks. No dried out or dead areas and even the rough was in good shape. Well worth the drive up from Boerne. If you haven't played there, put it on your play list.
I think it is one of the best courses within an hour from San Antonio.
I would highly recommend the drive to this course as it is well worth the investment of time and money. We were a twosome and played behind two foursomes in 4 hours. Where else can you do that on a public course? I am a member the The Dominion and this course is every bit as challenging and beautiful.
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
I will be going back as often as i can.
Oversanded Greens
Reserved a foursome for this date but wasn’t made aware at the time of booking that the greens would be vertucut and heavily sanded that week. The work took place on Mon/Tue yet by Friday the greens were still covered and made me think of playing on sand greens in the Middle East. Shouldn’t be charging the same price for poor greens. And why not work the sand into the greens and eliminate the excess?
Fairways Grear but Greens ...hmmm
Apparently, the greenskeeper decided to aerate and sand the greens during a high volume part of the year. There was so much sand that it created tiny mounds on the green. No matter how you read a putt, the sand is going to dramatically influence pace and break. Regardless, I understand the need to protect the greens; however, the management needs to provide discounted rates while the greens exhibit high amounts of sand. I found it utterly ridiculous they would not even offer. At least provide winter rates for the 2-3 weeks it takes to recover. I recommend calling in advance and ask if any maintenance is being performed.
The staff (starter, marshall's, cafe) were friendly, except the guy in the golf shop. He wasn't terribly excited about his job, I suppose. The range was in good shape, but the practice bunker amd chippong area need some care. All in all, the practice zone wasn't terrible.
My buddy and I had a club and grilled chicken sandwich, and they weren't bad at all. The portions and prices were very reasonable.
The overall green fee ($90) seems a bit high for the course and area, but inflation likely plays a big role.
All in all, I would play the course again. They have great GPS maps in the cart, and the fairways looked great due to the recent rains.
Excellent course condition and layout tee to green
