Golf Advisor: Top Courses in Texas (2014 #10)
Reviews
Such great potential
Drove 2 hours to concan to play this course after some friends recommended. The layout is great and the course has a ton of potential. However it's in rough shape probably due to money issues. Greens were very slow and thatchy. Zoisia fairways and teeboxes had not been mowed in a week or more. The bunkers were completely washed out. There was one water cooler on the front nine and the next cooler with water was between 16 and 17. In July when the heat index is 110+, there should be a cooler every 2-3 holes. We saw the beverage cart on hole #2 and that was it. There were probably 12 groups on the course and the pace of play was slow possibly due to there being native unmowed areas inside the cart paths. The trip was saved by the chicken fried steak at Hermann Sons.
Not bad after rainy days
I am on vacation at Garner State Park and decided to see if I can play a round of golf at this location. It's been raining just about every day in this area. The course was in good shape except for one hole but playable. The grass were long on some of the greens, but it's understandable due to the rain. So, my putts were slow. The bunkers were thick of mud. The staff were very friendly and answered all my questions. The view of the area was spectacular. All in all, it's a great place to play a round of golf. I will return in the future.
what's up at the golf facility
what's going on at this golf club? sand traps have been total neglected for years, rocks, gravel and weeds are in the bunkers, no way to play out of bunkers. greens need to be cut, the grass on the greens is to long to put on... i hammered a put and the ball stop on a severe downslope.... and the pin placements have not been changed in a few weeks as the grass has grown out over the cup, reducing the size of the cup???
no ball washers at the tee boxs, the ball washers and drinking water platforms have fallen or been knock down and left to rot???? drinking water on 2 holes only???
this course has been blessed with alot of rain and the fairways are green and have been mowed and taken care of, the greens have thick green grass so long that you can't put on... the bunkers are unplayable.... what's going on at this club?
Nice Scenary
Course is nice. Some pretty good holes on the course. I would only add sand to the bunkers. If you get in the bunker you will be hitting your ball out with a bunch of pebbles or rocks which are not friendly on Forged clubs. Other than that. Nice course. Friendly Staff.
Long Shot Maker Course
The day was cool the staff was nice the course is difficult and long. The only reason course rating wasn't excellent was because sand traps were like fitting out of hard pan, the greens were on their 3rd week of being sanded so were slow (10).
Serenity in Solitude
My foursome enjoyed a course that at times demanded pinpoint accuracy yet did not penalize for an occasional errant shot. Greens were recovering from a recent aeration but rolled true with not much variation in speed between greens. Fairway traps were suspect in not having adequate sand in the majority. Value for the price paid and the solitude of an unrushed round gave us all a greater appreciation of the essence of serenity as the sport of golf should be played.
So peaceful, awesome for golfing
Place is in great shape from tee boxes to greens. From hole one this place will have you wrap around it's beauty. Most relaxed golf game I had in years.
Hidden Gem
The Club at ConCan is a great hidden treasure in the vacation area of West Texas. With some serious dedication, the course has improved in condition and should continue to provide a stern test of golf.
So So course
The travel to Concan is nice and pleasant and a great opportunity to take in the Texas Hill country.
there is a road that leads to the course that's hidden so you have to pay attention where your driving, River road I believe.
Once we arrived at the course I was awestruck at the beauty of the surroundings and breathtaking scenery.
They have a great first class practice facility which is nice.
The 19th hole patio has a great view of the landscape.
Once we teed of I had noticed that the fairways were baked & fairways were hard prolly from the lack of rain this time of year. The greens were in excellent shape so they roll true. The bunkers were wet & have rocks in them so I would just pick your ball out from them. This course is not for high handicaps since there is a lot of high rough everywhere so bring extra balls you don't mind losing. The course layout is nice & fair. ae we were driving around the course noticed the golf cart was slow at times and has like a lawnmower like sound motor to it, The cart was just struggling to move on flat areas. I took it to get it switched and the starter told me that there were some carts that were like that. Lucky the next cart we got was much better.
Overall I would say it's a fun course & sceney is worth the trip. But disappointed bc The fairways could've been better.
Not worth the 85 mile trip I'll take out there.
This course has a lot of potential but needs better course maintenance.
Concan't
The course itself isn't bad. The tee boxes, fairways and greens are in good condition, but the sand traps are mostly mud and grass, and sunk deep in the ground. In addition, we had the sprinklers go on on us on 2 of the greens. During the entire front 9, people from every group could be heard yelling and talking way too loud, and the staff did nothing about it. Plus the grounds crew mowed close to us while we were on the fairway trying to hit. The only reason we played here is because the online deal was unbeatable. Would not go back
First time to Concan
Easy to tell that this course is hurting for money. Great layout but greens were mediocre at best and bunkers were not being maintained. It is still worth playing though.
Exceeded my expectations
Course was in great shape for late July and was a fun round with my son while on vacation at the Frio.
Watch the rough
The course is in a beautiful setting. The rough is deep and some areas are off limits to entry because they are designated as environmentally sensitive. The bunkers tend to have a number of rocks in them because of the soil in the area.
Great Hideway
Some of the best golf courses in Texas are in places that are off the beat. This rates up there with some of the best. It has everything a hill country golf course should have. No worry about someone crowding you on this course. Definitely very long. If you think you are a stratch golfer. Try this one on for size. Will test your ability to stay cool. If you do get hot you can always jump in the Frio which is close by. River is flowing and beautiful. Only thing about the course is the bunkers are not kept up and are unplayable in most cases. Think they may be taking some out. If you think you are a true golfer this course will let you know. If you just play for fun it can do, if you know how. This course will let you know if you really like to play, certainly not a put, put course. Go and enjoy this one if you want to answer your golf questions. The answers will be in front of you all the way on this course.
Nice course nice layout
Nice course nice layout great scenery. Only complaint is that the bunkers were in bad condition.
Challanging Course
Very challenging course, need a good tee shot!!! Very long par 4's, but wide fairways!
Not as expected
Had played this course before and was impressed with the extra attention to detail like free range balls, free coffee, tea, and lemonade. Not only have all of those things been revoked, I paid nearly $3 for a 20oz drink.
Without the extras they need to drop their prices to match what they offer. The course is good, but the experience is not a great value anymore. I would recommend as a one time experience maybe, but you better bring your wallet!
Must play
The greens had just been aerated but steel putted good. This is a must play course if you are in the area.
Cal First to see what special really is
I paid through golf now and receipt said cart and range balls included. When we get there attendant says that was an old plan and range balls are not included. Instead of arguing over 4 range balls we just started our round early.
