Had a scheduled date for months to fly to Denver to play golf on the weekend and Mother Nature threw a wrench in the plans. With constant rain and a forecast of such, had to find a course that had the least chance of rain on the weekend and luckily found this one to fit the bill. It certainly lived up to the billing on the best lists in Colorado, it certainly has a few quirks.

First, with the rain during the week and the night before, it was cart path only. That in itself was a chore walking to the ball and back on the hilly sides.

But, we were fortunate to team up with someone local and that helped a lot in determing where to hit the ball.

My takeaways were:

. 1. there were some peekaboo holes where you really need to place the ball to be able to see the green, if not, then there are a few holes with some blind shots and you hope you can find the ball in the desert landscape. ( suggest a color ball for that reason)

2. Yes, there are some elephant greens, but to me that is a challenge and quite fun to try and master and get close. My goal after reading the reviews, was to have no 3 putts and I met that goal luckily.

3. Despite the week conditions, the course was in really good shape and would play again in the heartbeat.

4. It is limited in the extra amenities, but to find a course like this for only $50 on the weekend, is a real bonus.

A 2 hour drive from Denver airport, and near Royal Gorge, it was worth it.

Four Mile ranch is a Jim Engh design about 2 hours south of Denver and 1 hour from Colorado Springs. It is very affordably priced (I have played 36 for $70) and worth the detour.

The club has a small clubhouse, so no restaurant. They do have some food and a beverage cart if that thing is important to you. They have a driving range and putting/chipping greens.

The course is bunkerless; however, the greens have a lot of contour. They are also quite large, so hitting the correct section is imperative. In some cases, like shorter holes, the greens are on top of a hill so accuracy is still needed or you need to have some powers of recovery. The layout also features plenty of blind holes, semi-blind shots, punch bowl greens and wide fairways. Like most courses with wide fairways, you will need to be on the correct side of the fairway to get a look at the green. There are a couple of holes with completely blind approaches like the par 5 6th and par 3 12th, but these also feature punchbowl greens. In the cases of many holes, the blindness will happen if you don't hit a proper drive on a par 4 or second on a par 5. Then you will have to search ahead to find the line.

The layout varies and there is a good mix of short/long half par holes. Above all, there is plenty of fun. Multiple plays are highly recommended as a replay is only the cost of a cart. The course is also quite walkable if you prefer to go that route.

There isn't a course like this, bunkerless, that I know of anywhere else. The routing, strategy to avoid blind shots and contoured greens make this a great play and good challenge. The routing goes through rock outcroppings and over them. Not many forced carries-I can only think of one on the par 3 7th, although if you play from the backs, there is one more par 4 drive that carries over a rock outcropping.

Over all, if you are about the golf and not what takes place outside of the course, then this is a great course. It does have amenities, but not the ones that are food service oriented (bar, restaurant, etc). What it has are some of the best green sites in the mountains and is a truly unique and fun experience.

I recommend and highly recommend 36. Great Value.

This course has a lot of unique features which is typical for a Jim Engh design. A lot elevation change, rocky adobe outcroppings. A decent number of blind shots. That aspect didn't bother me much. It was cool and wet when we played which slowed the greens down. The greens are ridiculous major tier changes and in normal circumstances very fast. I did really like this course and if are better player ask about their skins competition.

Take a putt putt course, a breathtaking mountain course, a finely manicured desert course, a trailer park, a top golf, 18 billion sharp rocks, and a cactus in a blender. Lay it out over 7000 yards in a shape dictated by Dr Seuss through a bad phone connection and what do you get? A southern Colorado gem, that's what, and this course is all about fun.

As with anything fun, you have to be in the right mindset to have it. If you come to 4 mile ranch with the notion of shooting your handicap, experiencing a true test of golf, or to wring the courses neck, stay home. This is the devils golf course.

If you want to have some laughs, see some incredibly unlikely shots, take some selfies, and enjoy some of the most beautiful vistas and indeed, course conditions in Colorado, this is the spot. Blind tee shots, approaches, I even had a blind putt. Balls hit into the native areas will do miraculous things. Bounce into the fairway, hole themselves, come back at you, vanish into thin air. The greens will make you think about putting in a totally different way, with mounding you could fall off, tiers that are so far apart they have different weather, and all so, so fast. How they mow some of them is a mystery. Yes, sir four mile is a wild, wild place, and you may not want to show anyone your scorecard, but you'll never ever forget it.

Bring your own food, and treat beverages like you would if you were going out on a boat, as amenities are next to nothing. Wear long pants and leather golf shoes regardless of heat because of cacti and the generally treacherous nature of the hazards, which you will find. Absolutely get a yardage book,, scorecards are personal preference. Fun is mandatory. If you take a friend who takes him game very seriously here, bring him a silly hat to get him in the mood. And don't bring a new box of proV1s , it won't help, and burning $50 takes less time. I couldn't make it my home course, but for a laid back Saturday game with your friends, you can't do better within 500 miles. Go and see!

4-mile is always a fun round due to its unique character. I did notice some winter kill on the slopes of the greens which is a first that I've seen as it has always been pretty well maintained since it opened. Not sure if the development will ever take off so they can get a clubhouse. Be sure to bring your own beverage of choice as the back nine can get pretty deserty.

4 Mile Ranch is not that far from Colorado Springs and is worth the drive. There are literally no facilities (snack bar, pro shop) but the track is really cool and difficult. There are many blind shots, lots of up and down -- undulating fairways and the greens are crazy with huge swales and mounds right on the putting surface. It was a whole lot of fun, the staff are extremely friendly and the rates are fair. We saw the beer cart girl only once and they really don't have any facilities yet, but I guess they are selling houses around the course and then maybe they'll put something more permanent in... we will definitely play there again!

Probably one of the best golf values I've seen in many years. Fantastic golf course with blind shots, undulating greens and beautiful scenery. Very challenging but playable even for the novice golfer.<br/> Weekday greens fee with cart less than $50 but course is on the caliber of ones I paid $125-$200 to play. Layout is unique and a little quirky but fun to play. So much so that you don't even worry about your score.

Four Mile can be tricky, with a fair number of blind shots, but the variety in the layout is great. But the shots to blind greens are into punch bowls, so just get it in the zip code! The conditions were a little rough-- early season, maybe?
