Great day at 4 mile
Extremely gusty day, with frequent gusts around 30 MPh. I found my clubs, bag, and myself pretty much dust covered the whole day. Interesting layout, with "hogbacks" sort of replacing sand traps. Several hidden greens tucked right behind hogbacks, which means you need to have a good chipping game and a certain amount of imagination. I loved the layout, which is fairly unusual and challenging.
Interesting course
On an extremely gusty/windy day, had an overall great solo round (3some with me cancelled). Course is very unique/unusual Jim Engh design, with several greens tucked behind fairly large mounds, which they call hogbacks. Got stuck behind group of 3 young guys/beginners, who left after 9 holes. You can lose balls in the native areas fairly easily, but should keep it in-play otherwise. Would love to play on a calmer day.
Friendly Staff
The staff was extremely friendly. Course was a lot of fun.
Unique challenge
Simple shop check in area. Decent range but horrible range balls.. The course is hilly and the greens are undulating. There are no sand traps. The views are amazing. Cart beverage service was around plenty. Fairways were in great shape as well as the greens despite being slow.
Very good condition
In the last month, the course conditions have improved greatly. Fairways are greening up and greens are in really good shape for early June. Maintenance staff is doing a great job. As always, the staff is very friendly.
Great layout / conditions / slow pace of play
greens were very shaggy and difficult to make putts but I think thats common for this time of year. driving range is a barren mess but who cares. The driving range balls were really bad.
The course is great, the staff was great, the conditions were really quite good. 5 hour and 30 minute round is inexcusable. Saw the marshal several times and he was always very nice. Maybe too nice because clearly there were groups not keeping up somewhere
Poor conditions
This course could be an amazing gem. Unfortunately the fairways were tore up and cut to the length of rough. The worst part was the greens. I've seen fairways that roll faster then these. After a couple holes I just started picking up once I was on the green. My group just stopped at the turn instead of playing the back. Very disappointing.
Great experience
Overall was a great experience, amazing views, and friendly staff. It’s definitely worth the drive and I will be going back.
Inventive layout
Have played several layouts by Jim Engh and have enjoyed them all. However, the condition of Four Mile Ranch was disappointing to say the least. Tee box grass was spotty. Many and large dead spots on the fairways. Pace of play seemed slow. FMR is no longer the 4th best public course in Colorado. It’s unfortunate because in prime condition it could be again.
Greens are like putting on a bowl of Oatmeal
I played the course last year and it was fun. Hopefully the greens are cut and rolled asap. They were extremely slow. Never played on anything like that. It was like putting on a bowl of Oatmeal. I may go back in a few weeks to give it another try.
Unique gem.
Short enough to reach in regulation, but undulating greens make scoring pars hard. Blind par 5 and par 3 challenging ans fun. Great mountain views.
Very sad
Worst shape fairways and greens ever played for this course
And used to love this course. I raved about this course to my son for two years. Went their yesterday and was really let down. Fairways really torn up and huge brown spots all over
Bumpy greens. Played with a couple from Pueblo Colorado
Which is only 30 miles away it was their fist time playing there
They couldn’t believe how bad it was also. Jim Engh designed favorite golf course would be beside himself to this.
Okay but....
Normally play this course a lot and it usually in fairly good shape by this time each season, however a lot of winter kill this time around. I've never seen this course in this rough of shape since it opened in 2008.
