Good condition and putting green are great
it's a typical flat fairways type municipal GC, nice maintained fairways and not too crowded on weekdays.
overall good course to play and convenient location
Wife's first time golfing ruined by teaching pro
Decided to take my wife here for her first time ever golfing. We were both so excited to introduce her to the game. Long story short, the teaching pro here ruined our experience and the only reason for the extra star was that the rest of the staff were very understanding and apologized on behalf of this person.
On to what happened...
10 minutes into what started off as a great day on the range, the golf pro drives right up to us (with his mask only half on by the way) and tells us that I'm not allowed to give her tips... Instead that I should go to the next stall and just hit balls. He even had the gall to say that I was "disrespecting golf teaching professionals" referring to himself.
It didn't help that (1) we saw other groups doing the SAME thing down on the other side of the range during our time there and (2) this was said to a person of color. Not saying this is a racial incident, but it's certainly not a good look when you're talking to the only people of color on the range and holding what seems like a double standard.
When we do end up getting her lessons, it will absolutely not be here with this golf pro.
Best Value in the bay
Poplar is a really great value golf course. Course is well maintained for a public course and priced very cheap for what you get.
Pros:
Open layout so you never lose balls
Good putting area/driving range
Well maintained
Cons:
Pace of play is exceptionally slow. They put groups of 4-5 out every 7 mins which backs up the course substantially. Can take 5 hrs to play
Tons of geese/geese crap all over the course
I’ll be back soon!
This course was in great shape for if you take in the amount of players that filled the course the day I played. The greens were in great shape although some tee boxes were not correctly marked for yardage. The layout is great for hitting a mix of shots as there are challenging holes of different lengths worth different hazards. The marshals definitely were on top of the pace of play and constantly reminded those who were moving slower. Hole 17 and 18 is near a gun range so if gun fire bothers you steer clear. This a great course to test your skills it’s also right off the freeway and is easily accessible. Will be returning soon!
Great course for beginners
Nice flat course, very forgiving. Not much hazard. Afternoon play ended with beautiful sunset. A bit windy today though.
Anyone notice how the starters have gotten rude? They think they are club bouncers
I've played here many times - decent practice track; gets way to crowed at times. The biggest issue I have is the attitude. During this pandemic restart seems like its a challenge to get tee times - I get it, everyone is golfing (social distancing outside).
I brought my kid there to walk the course with me to get some exercise, as I've done here MANY times. Puppet for the mgr comes out onto the course and tells me he can't walk with me - although every time I"m there that is the case with others and many times myself. I explain that he doesn't want to play. I offer to pay for his round even though he's not playing and our group has only 3 people playing. Unfortunately it didn't happen. . I tried to reason and find a solution in the pro shop but this guy wasn't hearing it - he was enjoying himself too much. He should stop acting like a club bouncer. BTW - he could've used some exercise himself. Next time he can walk with me.. lol
Home course
Really well maintained fairways and greens. Bunkers are also well kept even without raking. The course is flat and ideal for walkers. It is also fairly easy but there are challenges with ponds and creeks on holes 2,3,11, and 14. The 18th is a beautiful finish with a pond on the right and multi level green. Best time to play is the early morning hours- zero wind, fellow golfers are experienced and know the rules of etiquette. Also the bar and restaurant have a great menu and good service
Solid Muni. Good overall shape. Greens were in very good shape, smooth, fast and true. Friendly staff. Very windy in the late afternoon.
Poplar creek
Great course in really good condition. Good amenities friendly staff
Ah yes, the course I've played more than any other!
Simply the best cheap muni course around. Flat, minimal OB, fast pace due to it being really easy. Course moves, players love it because you can usually finish in under 4 hours and without losing a ball. If someone put together a system that could calculate quality of greens relative to cost, this would be right at the top. Best muni greens around, and you might shoot your record round here. Love Poplar.
Great course
Could not find reservation when checking in which was paid as a hot deal on GolfNow. Was charged the standard rate and tee time was an HOUR later than planned since that’s when they “could get us in.” Played here many times with no hiccups but today wasn’t one of them. Just be careful when booking.
Windy fun
Course is in relatively good shape. Often windy especially in the afternoon. fun grip it and rip it downwind. Challenging club selection into the headwind. Fair test with some easy holes and some difficult.
flat track
nice flat track where the conditions are above average. fairways and tee boxes are full of grass and trimmed nicely. putting greens are large with slight undulation however the speed is inconsistent. their putting green is much faster than on the course. tee times are busy but the players here keep up with the pace. this course can get difficult when the winds pick up. you can definitely overpower the course if your driver swing is on point.
