Tarpon Woods Golf Club
About
Named after the creek that borders it, Tarpon Woods Golf Club is home to an abundance of wildlife including deer, alligators, turkeys, coyotes, and otters. The layout is not the Tampa Bay area's most challenging but it is one of the most scenic. Formerly Brooker Creek Golf Club, the club changed management and made several improvements to the bunkers, tee boxes, and greens in 2009. It has been a local favorite for more than 30 years. Overall the golf course is not particularly long but the front nine plays longer than the back. Each nine offers a unique set of challenges. The third hole is the longest and toughest with water that runs down the left side. There is also water on both sides of the approach to the green.

not a place to avoid anymore
Its been over a year since I've played here I used to tell everyone avoid avoid avoid. Well I'm happy to say this is no longer true. Its not perfect yet but the work they have put in is obvious. The greens still have a few bad spots but ten times better then they were and you can see that they are continuing to work on them. There is no longer debris and grass clippings every where. The tee boxes are still a little bare but you can see the overseeding starting to take hold. Overall greatly improved well worth the price.if you haven't been in a while give it another chance you will be pleasantly surprised.
Good value
The course conditions were better than I've seen in the past. Only a couple greens were rough, a few fairways rough. We played in 3 hours, enjoyed the layout, and felt it was a good value for the weekend warrior.
Playing on a Pasture
The course was in poor maintenance. The fairways were full of weeds, there were numerous torn up areas and spots without any grass at all. The greens were also full of weeds in places and we had to continuously wipe our golf balls clean from the grass shavings left from mowing. The tee boxes were generally poorly maintained and looked more like a pasture than a golf tee box.
Never play again
Tee boxes had hardly any grass ,fairways lots of bare patches, greens were rough with bare patches. Cost should have been maybe $10. Never play there again.
Looks like a northern course in winter
Looks like a freeze hit each fairway and the greens have many rough spots. They are barely puttable on some holes. A shame because the layout is great. It is well maintained but you are hitting off dirt on all the approach shots - can't tell the fairway from the rough. None exist - just dirt and yellow dead thin growth. I keep playing here and it keeps disappointing me.
Not bad for the money
Tarpon Woods was a decent municipal course feel. Good value for the money spent. Not one I would go out of my way to play though.
Course in tough shape
Although we played in winter months, this course showed more signs of wear than any we played this year. The greens were not very good, only a few were really puttable. Yes were best up. Sadly many golfers do no deposit work or reseeding. I will try course again because the layout is enjoyable and challenging. The pace of play was fine. The staff was friendly and helpful.
SHOT MAKERS
NOT LONG BUT FAIR HITTING FAIRWAYS IS A MUST TO SCORE GREENS ARE TRICKY QUICK
bad greens
The greens are in bad shape, but the food is good at Beef O'Bradys.
Thank you for the review. We had some very unfortunate weather interference for a few months. Our greens are in much better shape now. We hope you will consider playing with us again.
Poor conditions
What a mess. Greens were littered with crab grass growth. Many t boxes were without grass. For $32 a round this was a terrible value.
A bit tired...good for a basic round
I jumped on GolfNow and noticed several open tee times on a Sunday. Not always a good thing, but I wanted to get in a quick round. Front 9 went fast, but back 9 slowed because I was behind guys who spent quite while searching for balls in the water. 4 hour round overall.
A few things to note:
-No starter or marshalls.
-Tee boxes are pretty sparse on grass and the ground is very hard.
-Greens have some dead patches, and #1 had various types of grass growing in it.
-Pretty open track, but short grass in the fairways is pretty narrow in places.
-Some postage stamp sized greens.
-Beef O'Brady's restaurant in clubhouse is pretty good.
-Carts are in good shape. Good power.
-Typical old country club style winding through a neighborhood of 1980's style homes, but none of the homes seemed too close to the course.
-You will likely see deer at various places.
Overall - not great, but good basic course.
Disappointing
I booked an 8:07 tee time thinking I would be matched up with some other golfers. Turns out I was the only golfer on the course. Period when I got to the back nine greens had not been cut. Flags were not in cups. No water on the course. The guy in the pro shop was nice enough to give me a cup of ice water at the turn since the restaurant was not open yet. All in all a bad experience. The place has a good layout but they need to decide if they are going to run a golf course or not.
Good value for the money.
My wife and friends of ours played this course 8/22/15. In fairness to Tarpon Woods we have had more rain and flooding in the Tampa Bay area than we have had in years. So keeping the course groomed had to be a challenge. The back 9 was just opened the day we played because of the water. If the rain holds off for a week of so the grass and overall playability will increase substantialy. I would rate this course better than average any other day but its too soon to go back. Give it a couple weeks and I am sure it will be in better shape for play.
Mow the fairways and the driving range
This course is the definition of a goat track. I will NEVER play this poor excuse of a golf course again! Teeing area and range haven't been mowed in weeks.
Saw a deer eating grass in the supposed range!
Nice Course
The course and the condition of the course was good. The staff in the club house was friendly.
There isn't much of an advantage to play the red tees ;).
My only criticism is there was no water on the course. I'm from the northeast and it was a hot muggy Florida summer day. Water/ice sure would have been welcome. The good news is that at after the front 9, we stopped at the club house and bought a soda. They told us they gave free refills. Only catch is you had to come back to the clubhouse to get them and that's not real easy when playing.
This course is a goat track.
The overall condition of the course is very poor. The greens are so poorly maintained that they have instituted a 2 flag system - one of which has 8 inch cups!
On the plus side if you like to photograph turkeys and deer you're in luck - also you'll have plenty of time as
you will be searching for your ball in the overgrown fairways and rough all day.
Too many owners over the years and no deep pockets to bring this fun track back to shape.
Beautiful Course with Deer
The course is beautify and very well laid out. The greens were patchy with dry spots, sandy spots among the green areas that made putting very uneven. The deer wandering around the course were a star attraction to add to the experience.
Lost Woods
This course should get it over with an just close, it was pretty apparent that they do not take care of the course when tee boxes have 3 inch grass growing on it an the greens have as much grass length as the tee box should.
Thanks for the review!
