Played the Blues (6432/70.4/125) in 4H, 40M mid day with Mike, T8fish & Lamitchw for their GK Cup match. The weather was sunny, mid 70's with a little breeze. SH is a fun, 35-36 par 71 layout with lakes coming into play on holes 4, 5, 14, 15 & 18. Plenty of mature trees and rollings hills to also keep things interesting. The customer service was excellent. I checked in and they were running right on time for tee times. No Marshall here, but the drink cart was around numerous times. The tees were fairly lush. Several holes could use divot repair. The Kikuyu fairways were mostly lush, well maintained & had good coverage. Beginning to get some summer brown spots, but still good to play from overall. The Kikuyu rough was semi lush and mowed down fairly close near the fairways. The farther away from the fairways it gets thinner and there is more hardpan and wood chips/turf reduction areas. The sand traps were nicely maintained with a decent amount of medium to large grain brown sand. The greens putted medium fast and were smooth/consistent from green to green. They were firm but still receptive to holding approach shots. SH is a challenging course to walk, constantly up/down rolling hills on the front 9, the back 9 is flat. Medium difficulty course in above average condition @ good prices. For a municipal course, tough to beat. Recommended.

SH

Played 27 holes from the Blues (6432/70.4/125) twilight in 5H. Best POP I have ever experienced here. The weather was in the 70's, bright, sunny and breezy. Matched up with Calhoun for 18 and played 9 as a single.

They are clearly getting the course primed to host the Simi City Championship this weekend. The rough was mowed down, the fairways looked as good as I have ever seen them here and they did a very subtle vericutt on the greens earlier in the week. I was told they are planning on having the greens swift and firm for the City Championship this weekend.

The customer service was excellent. I checked in and was sent right to the 1st tee as a single 15 minutes ahead of my scheduled tee time. Challenging course to walk, constantly up/down rolling hills on the front 9, the back 9 is flat.

The tees were fairly lush. However, they had more unfixed divots than I would have expected a few days before their biggest tournament of the year.

The Kikuyu fairways were mostly lush, well maintained & had good coverage.

The Kikuyu rough was semi lush and mowed down fairly close near the fairways. The farther away from the fairways it gets thinner and there is more hardpan and wood chips/turf reduction areas.

The sand traps were nicely maintained with a decent amount of medium to large grain brown sand. A few fairways traps has some rocks that needed to be removed.

The greens putted medium fast and were smooth/consistent from green to green. They were firm but still receptive to holding approach shots.

No Marshall here and no drink cart on weekdays. Nice snack shop on the turn with excellent burgers. Medium difficulty course in above average condition @ good prices. SH is a fun, 35-36 par 71 layout with lakes coming into play on holes 4, 5, 14, 15 & 18. Plenty of mature trees and rollings hills and to also keep things interesting. For a municipal course, tough to beat.

Played the Blues (6432/70.4/125) twilight with Jack & Rich in 4H 20M. The weather was in the high 70's, windy and clear. Fun layout with plenty of mature trees and hills to keep things interesting. Challenging course to walk, constantly up/down rolling hills on the front 9, the back 9 is flatter. The tees were nicely maintained, fairly lush with few unfixed divots. The Kikuyu fairways are lush, well maintained & had good coverage. The Kikuyu rough is generally lush and mowed down fairly close near the fairways. Simi Hills

Played the Blues (6432/70.5/125) with seniors Jeff & Patty in 4.5H on a busy Monday mid-day. We teed off @ 11 am in sunny, breezy conditions with temps in the 80's sandwiched in between 4somes.

The course is looking and playing well. Somewhat challenging course to walk, constantly up/down rolling hills on the front 9, the back 9 is more flat.

The tees were decently maintained, good coverage with few unfixed divots.

The Kikuyu fairways had good coverage and were mostly lush, nice to play from.

The Kikuyu rough is mowed down and more lush than thin. Even though the rough is not high, it's still punitive. Several times we had to be within 5 yards of balls to see them. Farther away from the fairways you could get hardpan, wood chips, thin areas or thick lost ball rough.

The sand traps were nicely maintained with a generous amount of medium to large grain brown sand.

The greens were smooth, putted medium fast and while firm, they still held well struck approach shots.

The customer service was excellent. Their carts have GPS to the front/middle/back of the green and can be adjusted to measure to traps or hazards. The driving range is average, off mats. However they do have a club repair center on site.

Fun layout with plenty of hills & trees to keep things interesting. Medium difficulty course in very good condition @ reasonable prices. Recommended = Yes.

Fun Little Course

Unfortunately the day we played had 25-30 mile an hour wind and so it was extremely difficult. That is one thing to think about when heading to simi valley, it does get windy out there.
However the course was fun and had its good moments. Overall there were some rough areas that needed some love with all the rain they have been getting. But for the price of round, it was well worth it.

For 25 min outside of LA to get a little different track it isn't bad. I personally won't make it a regular play for me but its a good once in a while track to get out to.

Played the Blues (6432/70.5/125) as a 3some in 4H twilight in windy, sunny conditions. The recent rains have the course looking nice.

Most of the tees were decently maintained, good coverage with few unfixed divots.

The Kikuyu fairways had good coverage but were more thin than lush.

The Kikuyu rough is more thin than lush overall. Farther away from the fairways, it is more hit/miss. You could get hardpan, wood chips, brown/thin areas or thick lost ball rough.

The sand traps were average with a decent amount of medium to large grain brown sand.

The greens were very good bordering on excellent. They were smooth, putted medium fast and held well struck approach shots.

Played the Blues (6432/70.5/125) in 4H on an overcast, rainy, calm afternoon. Matched up with Gunther, Margot & Devin for an enjoyable mid day round.

Fun layout with plenty of hills & trees to keep you honest. Nice practice putting green that is very comparable to the on course greens, small practice chipping area. Medium to somewhat challenging course to walk, constantly up/down rolling hills on the front 9, the back 9 is flat. The customer service was mediocre, not sure why they were adamant that our group could not tee off until the actual tee time when #1 tee was sitting vacant for 15 minutes at a time? Only has a few water stations, so that needs to be taken into account before you tee off here. Overall, the course is in decent condition for mid December.

Most of the tees were decently maintained, good coverage with few unfixed divots.

The Kikuyu fairways had good coverage, more thin than lush.

The Kikuyu rough is more thin than lush in most places. Farther away from the fairways, it is more hit/miss. You could get hardpan, wood chips, brown/thin areas or thick lost ball rough.

The sand traps were very well maintained. A decent amount of medium to large grain brown sand that played well.

The greens were good overall. They were firm but held well truck approach shots. They putted medium speed & were consistent from green to green.

Played the Blues (6432/70.5/125) in 4H, 15M in cloudy, calm conditions in the mid 60's. Matched up with Dave, Elliott & Greg for an enjoyable mid day weekend round. The course is in decent condition for mid December and was busy mid day but the pace moved well for a weekend.

Most of the tees were decently maintained, good coverage with few unfixed divots.

The Kikuyu fairways had good coverage and played better than they looked.

The Kikuyu rough is more thin than lush in most places. Farther away from the fairways, it is more hit/miss. You could get hardpan, wood chips, brown/thin areas or thick lost ball rough.

The sand traps were very nicely maintained. A decent amount of medium to large grain brown sand that played well.

The greens were good overall. They putted medium speed & were consistent from green to green. They were soft and held approach shots. A complaint I have here is the areas of encroachment from the Kikuyu collars into the edges of many greens. Can't we edge from time to time and make this a non issue?

Fun layout with plenty of hills & trees to keep you honest. Nice practice putting green that is very comparable to the on course greens, small practice chipping area. Medium to somewhat challenging course to walk, constantly up/down rolling hills on the front 9, the back 9 is flat. The customer service was okay. Walked the Blues (6432/70.5/125) in 3H, 45M with Kevin for their $23 twilight rate. Weather clear, around 90 and calm. Course surprisingly busy mid afternoon with group after group playing at a steady pace.

Fun layout with plenty of hills & trees to keep you honest. Nice practice putting green that is very comparable to the on course greens, small practice chipping area. Medium to somewhat challenging course to walk, constantly up/down rolling hills on the front 9, the back 9 is flatter.

Most of the tees were nicely maintained, fairly lush with few unfixed divots.

The Kikuyu fairways are mostly lush, well maintained & had good coverage with a few browned out spots.

The Kikuyu rough is fairly lush and mowed down fairly close near the fairways. Farther away from the fairways, it gets browner and there is more hardpan, with some thicker areas mixed in.

The sand traps were decently maintained. Medium to large grain brown sand that usually plays better than it looks.

The greens had a few browned out areas due to the heat, but were good overall. They putted medium speed, were consistent from green to green & were receptive to holding approach shots.

Walked the Blues (6432/70.4/125) twilight for $23 with Andy, Ernesto & Keith in 4H 35M. The slow 4some in front of us playing the whites was almost 3 holes behind by the end of the round. The weather was in the high 70's, partly cloudy and breezy.

With the recent hot wave, the conditions were a step down from when I played here a week ago. Most of the tees were nicely maintained, fairly lush with few unfixed divots.

Walked the Blues (6432/70.4/125) twilight 10/6 for $23 with RGM2525, John & Sean in 3H, 40M. The weather was warm and fairly calm, very nice golf weather.

Most of the tees were lush with few unfixed divots, nicely maintained.

The rough is generally lush and deep enough to let your ball settle down just enough to be penal. Some scattered hardpan areas in the rough. The rough around the greens is mowed down and makes for nice chipping.

The traps had a decent amount of sand, but they had definitely not been raked today. Medium to large grain dark brown sand that usually plays better than it looks.

An oddity is that almost all the normal portable water stations on the course were not out today? Fun layout, medium on the challenge scale, but there are plenty of hills & trees that keep you honest. Twilight rates are very good, 1st time I played here in 5 months. Walked the blues (6432/70.4/125) as an early a.m. single. POP was excellent, 3 1/2 hours not rushing or being rushed is a great way to play golf. Different course early when the conditions are calm. Medium to somewhat challenging course to walk, constantly up/down rolling hills on the front 9, the back 9 is flatter.

Most of the tees were lush with few unfixed divots, very nicely maintained.

Decent layout, medium on the challenge scale, but there are plenty of hills & trees that keep you honest. Marshalls are consistently out patrolling the course. No drink cart today, but there are plenty of water stations on the course. It is a GREAT deal to play here later in the day, but the morning rates make playing here more questionable IMO. However, one thing I really like is that they offer morning, mid morning, early twilight and twilight rate alternatives. I have found the customer service to be much improved from what I remembered @ this course before I moved to Portland in 2012. It is in nicer condition that many other local courses. For those two reasons, I have now played here as much in the last 6 months as in the last 10 years combined. If you desire an alternative from a super challenging course, this is a good mid level alternative.

Walked the blues (6432/70.4/125) for $32, playing with Toobaked, Will & Jeff. POP was OK, we waited a few shots here and there on a beautiful day in the mid 70's. Started fairly calm, but the wind was beginning to pick up later in the round. Medium to somewhat challenging course to walk, constantly up/down gentle rolling hills on the front, the back is flatter.

Most of the tees were lush with few unfixed divots

The fairways were usually lush, well maintained & had good coverage overall. Numerous fairways had spot sprinklers out, so they are trying hard to keep it lush.

The rough is generally lush and deep enough to be penal. Some scattered hardpan areas in the rough.

The traps had a decent amount of sand and they were very well maintained from a raking perspective. However, the quality of the sand is mediocre. Medium to large grain sand, but it plays better than it looks.

The greens are almost totally back after aeration. They were medium fast and putted well, consistent from green to green. Overall, typical poa annua, a bit bumpy as the ball slowed near the hole.

Decent layout, not overly taxing or challenging, but hilly with plenty of trees that keep you honest. No drink cart today, but there are plenty of water stations on the course. I have recently found the customer service to be excellent here. Good mid range alternative currently in nice condition.

Walked the blues (6432/70.4/125) on their standard mid day walking rate of $28. Played as a single & waited only a few shots the entire round on a beautiful but very windy day in the mid 70's. POP was excellent, 3H, 30M. Medium to somewhat challenging course to walk, constantly up/down gentle rolling hills on the front, the back is flatter.

The greens are well on their way to being flat out NICE soon. The greens are recovering nicely from aeration. They generally already putted well, medium speed and mostly firm, pretty consistent from green to green. They had recently had a very fine vericutting, which made them just a touch bumpy. Overall, typical poa annua, a bit bumpy as the ball slowed near the hole.

The fairways had good coverage overall, usually lush, occasionally thin.

The rough is generally lush and deep enough to be penal. Some scattered hardpan areas in the rough.

The traps had a decent amount of sand and they were very well maintained from a raking perspective. However, the quality of the sand is mediocre. Medium to large grain sand, it plays better than it looks.

I have recently found the customer service to be excellent here. No drink cart today, but there are plenty of water stations on the course. Decent layout, not overly taxing or challenging, but hilly with plenty of trees that keep you honest. There were numerous areas where they had spot sprinklers running. Walked the blues (6432/70.4/125) on their standard walking rate of $28. Played as a single & did not wait a shot the entire round on a beautiful day in the 70's. POP was excellent, 3H, 20M, definitely the quickest round I have ever played here.

Many of the tees have been recently sanded, which looked poor but did not really affect play. Looked like a combination of regular maintenance and trying to level them, the sanding was heavier in some areas than others.

The fairways and rough both had good coverage overall, occasionally lush, but generally winter thin. Some scattered hardpan areas in the rough.

The traps had a decent amount of sand and they were very well maintained from a raking perspective. However, the quality of the sand is mediocre. Medium to large grain, with hundreds of small rocks mixed in. After I removed obvious rocks, the sand was surprisingly playable however, much more so that I would have suspected... and I found more than my share.

The greens are typical poa annua, somewhat bumpy @ times, especially as the ball slowed near the hole. However, they generally putted nice, medium fast and very firm, pretty consistent from green to green.

I have recently found the customer service to be excellent here. No drink cart today, but there are plenty of water stations on the course. Decent layout, not overly taxing or challenging, but hilly with trees keeps you honest. They had numerous areas marked as GUR and had transplanted grass and were watering the roped off areas. The good news is that I got off my "84" streak @ Simi Hills in my last 2 rounds. In looking back @ my prior rounds in the scoretracker, I had incredibly shot an 84 in 5 of the 8 rounds played on this course going back almost 8 years, and always within 5 shots in the 80's. The bad news is that an 84 sounds good compared to an 86. Recommended as long as they are taking care of the place like they have been of late.

Walked

Simi Hills

Walked the blues (6432/70.4/125) on their standard twilight rate of $23. Played nine as a solo, then 9 with another single, we did not wait a shot AD on a beautiful afternoon in the mid 70's. POP was excellent, 3H, 40M, probably the quickest round I have ever played here.

Many of the tees had been sanded recently, so their condition was mediocre. Looked like a combination of regular maintenance and trying to level them, the sanding was heavier in some areas than others. Did not affect play however.

The fairways and rough were both winter thin but had good coverage, occasionally lush. They were both better than when I played here a month ago.

The traps had a decent amount of sand and they were well maintained from a raking perspective. However, the quality of the sand is not very good. Medium to large grain, with hundreds of small rocks mixed in the three greenside bunkers I was in.

The greens putted nice, medium fast. Typical poa annua, somewhat bumpy @ times, especially as the ball slowed near the hole. A downside was that they were very firm, which definitely affected how they held irons. I had a 9I approach shot land at least 15' on the green and end up in a back bunker.

Customer service was excellent, I walked in, paid and was on the 1st tee 2 minutes later. No drink cart today, but there are plenty of water stations on the course. They had numerous areas marked as GUR and had transplanted grass and were watering the roped off areas. It appeared to me they are making a good effort to get the course in better condition. I always liked the layout and would play here more if the conditions continue to be decent.

Simi

First time out @ Simi Hills in over 5 years. They have added some additional black tees boxes on certain holes and spruced things up aesthetically by adding a bunch of mini palm trees behind #7 green and left of #8 tee since I last played here. I was told they are going to close the course late this year for renovation and add some length on the back and make it a par 72 layout.

Walked the blues (6432/70.4/125) in 4 1/2 hours on their standard twilight rate of $23. We waited practically every shot on the back 9 on a beautiful afternoon in the mid 70's. Was matched up with David, Tiesa and Dan, Fun round.

The tees were decent, it looked like they were being rotated regularly.

The fairways and rough were both winter thin but had good coverage, occasionally lush.

The traps had a decent amount of sand and they were well maintained from a raking perspective. However, the quality of the sand was poor. There were hundreds of small rocks mixed in both fairway bunkers I was in.

The greens were nice, relatively smooth and medium fast, definitely the best part of the course.

Customer service was excellent, we teed off 5 minutes before our scheduled tee time. The drink gal came around once and there are plenty of water stations on the course. They had numerous areas marked as GUR and had transplanted grass and were watering the roped off areas. It appeared to me they were making a good effort to get the course in better condition. I always liked the layout and would play here more if the conditions were as good as they were today. POP has almost always been a challenge here however.
