Makani keeps getting better
I've been playing this course for years, back when it was literally a goat track. Even with bare spots and slow greens it was fun. Now it's a different course, even though the routing is unchanged. The fully redone greens are fast and true, and the course still offers plenty of options and challenge from the right tees. There's a great mix of short and longer holes. Playable for all, but you have to use some strategy to score well.
Hopefully you take advantage of 15 and 16, because 17/18 can be a tough finish if the wind is blowing.
Great greens
Always a pleasure to play. The greens are in great shape. The design is typical Pete Dye, challenging.
Makani plays Big
I love this course because it is challenging. It is fair and requires some planning to avoid trouble. It has a solid finish with 16,17 and 18 providing drama.
The scenery is spectacular and is a perfect setting for golf.
Great course
Great course and very beautiful. Be prepared to sacrifice some golf balls to Pele and don't waste time looking for them in the long grass and bushes.
First time
The course was beautiful and windy. Tricky on some holes, but easier on others. Played by myself and joined a twosome in front of me. It is the course they paly on all of the time. I was slowed down by a twosome and was upset, about the pace of play...until I learned one of the golfers was legally blind and was golfing with son. I felt so stupid, I told them I admired his dad and shook his dad's hand. I will never. ever complain about pace of play again. Good day overall....i learned to be more patient and much more humble. I'll be back!
Hidden Gem
This is a hidden gem in the Big Island for golf. The course is a fun layout. Just FYI, the clubhouse is small and does not have restaurant or bar, it is all grab and go.
Worth It To Play
I enjoyed my round here. Was less manicured than the resort courses which gave me a local feel which I really enjoyed. Greens were fast and true. Lost a couple balls after hitting.good shots due to no buffer between fairway and thick vegitation. That's perhaps my only complaint. Enjoyed the periodic cool breezes on a warm day too.
Great layout but
The basics of the course are good, but maintenance budget needs to be increased.. Played two years ago and you can see steady decline in tees, traps, fairways and roughs ….. still a fun layout but getting close to having to invest major sums to get course in shape ….
Great views and layout
My and wife and I played there several times over our last few visits. Course is in good shape. Greens were especially good. It’s away from the shore but has nice Mountain View’s and some views of the coast. We will play again on our next visit.
Nice course
Very nice golf course with friendly staff. We played twice but unfortunately it was raining after 9 holes on both days.
Love this course!
Great staff, very friendly.
Course is great, abundant wildlife.
17 is a par 3 with island green, tough but fun.
Finishing hole 18 is beautiful but difficult, second over water may require a lay up if your drive isn’t positioned right or long enough.
Love this course!
Design
Another great Dye design. I have played this course many times over 15 years and find it in excellent condition every time.
