All about the Greens
This course has Rye Grass Greens. Thus some may find them challenging. True Roll and Fast. You can't find Rye Grass greens in this area. So I drive 2 hours to play here. It's worth it. I've been playing this course for many years. It is always well maintained. The only cons would be:
1 The staff is somewhat arrogant. However most Golf Clubs are that way.
2 The buildings are Temporary looking. Although I give them a break on that due to the Huge fire they had a few years ago. Even still, who goes to a course for the look of the buildings.......
Stevinson Ranch
Played the blues (6646/72.7/129), teeing off @ 11A on 9/9/14 on a prepaid Golfnow Hot Deal for $25 w cart on my way to Oregon. I played 12 holes as a single, then was joined by a very nice couple from Texas. We played behind 2 foreign professionals playing the tips, they were behind a 4some. The POP was brutal, 4.5 hours is a LONG round on a weekday when you play 2/3 of it by yourself with a cart. I was waiting in my cart beside the next tee while the group in front of me was waiting to tee off on roughly half the holes. The marshall was out riding around, but I think the issue was the 4/2/1/2 groupings that left the 1st tee in quick sucession.
I was warned beforehand that the course was not in great shape because of the drought & pump issues. However, I found it very playable, much better than most. There were a couple of greens and fairways that they had recently resodded areas that were GUR and a few hot spot in the fairways... but other than that, most of the course was in very good to excellent condition.
My 1st time playing here, I loved the layout, especially the old school grass bunkers beside many greens. Plenty of water, forced carries, traps and native areas to keep you on your toes on almost every shot. The blues here are only the 3rd longest tees, I was laughing @ where the professionals playing in front of me were hitting into the greens on their 2nd shots. This would be a really UGLY course from the tips, as it's 75.2/143 rating/slope suggest.
The big, undulating greens putted medium fast. I probably fixed a dozen old ball marks per green just around my general line, that was the only negative other than the couple of greens they had resodded small areas of.
The fairways were LUSH, you got spongy lies and the ball sat up like it was on a tee many times. There were hot spots on almost every hole that had browned out, but it was emerald green otherwise. Divots were an issue, much like the ball marks, far too few players were filling in their fairways divots as well.
The traps were immaculately maintained with nice sand. I loved the design and style on some of the pot bunkers.
Exactly the opposite of the trap condition was the tees. While they were level, many had numerous areas of unfixed divots and very only fair. Not nearly up to the standards of the rest of the course.
The grass rough wasn't overly long but was penal. It was thick and your ball usually settled down, tough to get good club on anything more than a shorter iron. The native areas were hit & miss, everything from hardpan to thick lost ball type weeds.
The carts had GPS to the front/middle/back of the greens with no other information. Considering the amount of fairway bunkers and diagonal holes one could be tempted to cut off yardage by going over corners, it would have been nice to have distance to fairway traps. I definitely liked that they had fairway markers every 25 yards.
The customer service in the pro shop was excellent, I arrived earlier than my tee time and they told me to go whenever I was ready. Excellent course, I would play here often if I lived close by and look forward to playing again.
Mixed Feelings
Generally, enjoyed the challenge this course offered; and I will definitely be back but play it much differently. The rough is unforgiving and the hazards are tight to the fairways and greens. There are pockets of rough and native areas that you can't see from the tees. Since it was a two hour drive and I went immediately to the first tee, studying the illustrated yardage guide more thoroughly would have been a big help.
On the negative side, there was a lot of fairway maintenance in progress with areas being reseeded and sanded as well as numerous bare spots. I thought the course was very wet in most of the fairways; but, playing in the morning, that could be the usual condition. The greens were somewhat inconsistent, some damp and slow, some dry and fast. The sand in the bunkers was crusty and chunky and not very deep although the bunkers were deep...
Overall, I would recommend the course, but, probably, not to beginners; and I'll be back again...
one of the best golf course I've ever played
great golf course, service was awesome and very friendly. Wish it was closer so I can play it more often.
stevenson ranch golf course
Worth the trip and a great Golf Now deal. Play from the tips if you want a very challenging experience. The greens are showing the summer heat but still fast and receptive. This course has plenty of water for irrigation.
Tough course, but fun to play!
Stevenson Ranch is a great course and a lot of fun to play. It is well worth coming out to play there, even if you have to drive a few hours to do so! The course is in good condition and can be as challenging as you want it to be (depending on which tees you play from). It also has one of the best practice facilities I have ever seen! If you have never played here, you owe it to yourself to put it on your list of places to play. The staff is very friendly and welcoming!!
Best Golf Course in The Central Valley
By far the best public golf course in the Central Valley, links style, extremely challenge, great experience !!!
play this course and enjoy it.
very friendly staffs.
course conditions was very good.
updated carts with navigate helped a lot.
parking on carports was new.
best staffs but players
staffs were very friendly include marshal.
most time players complains about staffs but not this time, I complain about players (before complains to others, learn your golf manners first).
Great Fairways, Above average greens
I have played this course a few times over the past decade and this is the best condition I have ever seen this course. Usually it is a little pricey for me, but I got a good deal through golfnow. We had such a good time we played an extra nine.
Good day of golf
I went as a single and was able to play thru without any hold ups. The stafff and the golfers were very courteous. The beverage cart lady was very courteous and gave me a towel soaked in ice water so that I can use it to cool down as it was hot that day. Booking with golf now.com was a breeze and I even got a bucket of balls for the practice range. The condition of the coarse is great better than I expected. I will return and recommend playing there.
Father/Son Outing
The multiple tees made this a great experience for my dad and I. I played the blacks and he played the whites which made the course equitable.
nice place
expected a little better pro shop and club house for the price. food was excellent..
Beautiful!
I am a novice player as I've only been playing for a little over a year. I live in Las Vegas where there are many beautiful courses. I grew up in Los Banos which is about 20 minutes south of Stevinson. I visit Los Banos quite frequently and since I started playing golf I have played several different courses within about a 120 mile radius of this course but none of them compare to this one. This course may not be the most challenging nor is it the greatest design but it easily makes up for that with the spectacular maintenance! Like I said before, I've played some beautiful and immaculate courses in Las Vegas such as Bears' Best which is a course that duplicates Jack Nicklaus' 18 best holes and this course does not compare in design, obviously, but the fairways, and the greens throughout are just as beautifully maintained, if not better!
the course was in great shape
beautiful golf course no one there to play we got stuck behind some players twosome it took forever to play no Marshall speed up Golfers
Excellent course
Great course, excellent condition, friendly staff, the best course in Central Valley.
FAIRWAYS AND TEES ARE GREAT
course is in great shape, traps are awful. Greens were good but sanded
As advertised!
As a high handicapper, I was a little intimidated by this highly rated course, but, as I have found in the past, the course was so meticulously groomed that if you could keep the ball in play, you got a great lie that gave even me a chance to hit the well protected greens. But beware getting out of the first cut, because there is no second cut, only SR's famous grasslands. Also, you might want to lay up to some of the greens and pitch over the abundant sand. Overall, a beautifully maintained and challenging, but fair, course. If you really want an insane challenge, move to one of the back tee sets for more obstacles.
Beautiful Course
As mentioned, it is a bit of a haul to get out there, but when you get there you are surrounded by some beautiful farm land. They did a great job with this property, and it was fun to play. The practice areas are really nice too.
Do yourself a favor and make the trip with your buddies.
