Cape Fear National at Brunswick Forest
About
Opened in 2010, it did not take Cape Fear National at Brunswick Forest long to be ranked as one of the "top 10 best courses you can play in North Carolina" by Golfweek. It was quite a feat to create a course that stood out in an area known for its exceptional golf, but designer Tim Cate mastered the challenge. Although it was carefully carved through acres of forest, the trees don't play much of a role on the course. Sand and water will be the most formidable challenges on this links layout. Golfers can expect forced carries over native marshes and massive waste bunkers strategically placed throughout. There are challenges in store for players of all skill levels but Cape Fear National is also a fair and straightforward test with no hidden hazards.

Never on Wednesday
This is a nicely designed course with deep bunkers protecting every green.
Water comes into play on both sides up to the green and there are numerous forced carries that traverse alligator and snake infested zones.
The greens and tees are in good shape, but the fairways are thin and brown in spots. This is a good test of golf, and the bag drop, pro shop, and Mr. Donahue, the starter are first class.
Unfortunately, they no longer provide free range balls nor yardage books.
The pace of play is very slow here. We were behind a threesome that was pathetically slow. We waited on every shot while this group dawdled constantly. They were wandering around aimlessly taking multiple practice swings even in bunkers.
The Marshall, Steve, was unable to get them moving. I was informed that Wednesday was the day of the men's golf league and that they measure every put like it was the US Open.
They are perfectly happy here with a four and a half hour round while we consider such a
lengthy amount of time in 90 degree heat not desirable.
Check with the pro shop on their league play situation before booking a tee time.
The pro shop had a nice selection of merchandise some at good discounts.
They have a nice little bar area, but space is very limited.

Mixed Conditions
My wife and I played 18.Like many courses, the course will be surrounded by homes. Major construction is evident on a couple of holes that distracts from the scenery on the rest of the course. Several forced carries over brush-181 yards on #10 from the Senior tee. Balls not in the fairway tend to disappear.
great course
excellent conditions tee to green. fairways are beautiful and the greens were even better.you have to play this course.
Good Challenge for Good to Better Players
Really has high hopes for this course... Course was a little wet due to rains over the last couple of weeks but for the most part course held together well. Greens were fast, and rolled true. Course design was a challenge especially not playing there before. Staff is super friendly. I would recommend to anyone who is more of an intermediate to advance golfer, not the best for a newbie or hacker...
No course guidance
No Gps, no pictures of the hole on the card, and no 150 markets make the first time you play the course an absolute guess. Bring your own gps or pony up the money for the yardage.
Nice new facility in great condition
This is a challenging golf course with lots of water, environmental hazards, bunkers and often large greens. You need to place the ball well all day.
There are 6 tee boxes on every hole allowing you to dial your skill level.
It's not your typical long and wide course, it's difficult because it is tricky, but still long if you choose so.
For the most part you have no fairway next to the hole you are playing which makes it a nice hike as well.
There is a nice putting and chipping green at the first tee to loosen up. The carts have a medium size cooler with cold water, but no GPS. There are enough distance markers in the fairway and the cart path to not miss it.
The clubhouse looks very nice and is new.
Great layout
this really is a premium course. It compares favorably with many of the nicer courses in Myrtle Beach. first, the course is beutiful and the staff oculd not have been nicer. Although it is in a housing development, houses do not interfere on any of the holes. Most holes are surrounded by woods and natural areas without houses nearby. The layout is challenging, but generally fair. My father had difficulty hitting over some of the environmental areas from the forward tees as there was no option but to go over these areas. Overall a great round
This course was challenging. Take extra balls.
We thought the course was nice to play. Thought it could be better marked with signs on the course. There could be better signs to find the course also. Overall it was a Great course to play. WE thought there could have been a drink cart.
Challenging
Course is tight and challenging, lots of sand. Very receptive greens, lightning fast. Fairly expensive for a winter rate out of towner but worth it. You will not be displeased. Starter was very accommodating and informative. Tee time was @ 11:15, I showed up @ 9:15 and they got me off @ 10:15. I would def. recommend this course.
a lot of sand
was not playable--too wet- would not give rain check
My new favorite course
Country club experience at a reasonable price. Great club house, friendly staff, a bag of practice balls to warm up with at a great little practice facility prior to you round, is only a glimpse into the great golf experience that awaits you at this fantastic Tim Cate design.
The first tee gives you a good glimpse into what awaits you, as you are faced with a forced carry over a marsh/wetlands area. The second hole a dogleg left par 5 doubles the fun, as you again have the forced carry tee shot. But you really need to position your tee shot, because you have another forced carry on your second to negotiate the dogleg.
Course conditions are fantastic, the greens run true and fast, the green speed for the day is posted at the clubhouse, they were running 12.5 the day we played.
Sand is plentiful, including a couple of fairways that are flanked by large waste areas tee to green.
OB is not a problem, as most areas that would be OB on other courses, are wetland areas and treated as lateral hazards. This saves a lot of time as there is no need for provisional/lost ball situations.
They are starting to build homes on the course, so if you really want to enjoy the natural beauty of this course, play it soon before the million dollar homes encroach upon it.
