The three different nines at Carolina National Golf Club are named after the birds that inhabit the acres of beautiful low country that the course sits on. Fred Coupes designed the 27-hole layout, taking care to preserve the beautiful natural landscape and wildlife provided by its location on the shores of the Lockwood Folly River. His work earned the golf course designation as an Audubon Sanctuary. The nines: Ibis, Egret, and Heron; all have different challenges. However, they all have challenging greens that boast some of the best conditions in the area. The Ibis is the most player-friendly of the nines. Carolina National Golf Club's 27-hole layout is played as three different 18-hole combinations. The Ibis offers some opportunities to recover your score since it is not quite as long as either the Egret or Heron.

I heard that Carolina National struggled in the spring because of the long winter, but the course was in pretty good shape today. Greens had the occasional rough patch but rolled pretty well. Fairways were aerated but still in decent shape. It’s always a fun and challenging layout, especially from the longer tees, with some of the most scenic par 3’s in the region. Nice staff, practice facilities, and clubhouse. Feels like a private club, and it’s worth a try if you’ve never played here before.

OVERALL: 7.3/10, potential to be 8.5/10 when the fairways grow in.

We arrived early for our confirmed 10:20 tee time for 2 made 6 days before. Checked in and went to first tee before starter told us to return to putting area as they were a "little" delayed. Advised that our time was now 10.36. When questioned, pro shop told that maybe a computer mishap, but a member foursome was playing at 10:20. We joined a 2-some at their 10:36 time. Teed off at 11:00 and played in 5+ hours of very slow play. If they had sent an email to advise of the change, it would have been OK. And the next day I got an ad/offer from the course for another round. No apology.for the 90 minute delay.

This course offers 27 holes that will challenge your play, an incredible layout that will require different types of shots, but be prepared to wait up to 20 MINUTES per shot. This is the third time I’ve played this course and never have I played a course that has 27 holes and puts groups off every 8 minutes all on the same 9. A perfect recipe to have you waiting on every tee and between shots. Why they don’t send groups off different 9’s is beyond me. It seems as though they don’t care about the quality of play and would rather just make the most profit off sending a bunch of people out at once. I don’t know about you, But I expect a course to be faster than 3hr front nine while riding. If there are a lot of open tee times definitely play this course, otherwise STAY CLEAR.

The staff was friendly and welcoming. Nice Pro Shop. We didn’t eat here, so can’t speak to that. Beautiful layout of the course, but cart paths were in rough shape in a lot of places - you could get jolted out of the cart if you weren’t watching carefully as there were big chunks missing or broken. The greens were not good... most were sand in large part, so balls did not roll true. All that said, it was a fun course to play. We played Egret and Heron. Egret was not as challenging as Heron (or maybe the heat was impacting us more on the 2nd nine - entirely possible!). Pace of play was very good... we didn’t have to wait and didn’t feel “pushed”. Played 18 in 4 hrs total. With a little work on the greens and cart paths, this would be a really enjoyable course.

Pace of play terrible. Good ranger would make golfers who cannot play pick up and would not let them go for two on the par 5s when they end up in woods anyway.

GREENS ARE HORRIBLE. not fair to blame the winter. Tarp the greens when it is freezing. Should have left the greens bent grass since you don't know how to take care of bermuda.

Ineffective starter and no ranger. Nearly five hours on an uncrowded course. The course is attractive and a nice level of difficulty for average players. And it was in reasonable condition considering the winter damage in the area. There were no cart path restrictions, which was a good thing because all the buckling cart paths made for a rough ride. Not a good experience!

This Fred Couples design composed of three nine hole layouts. All of the courses in this area lost greens due to the hard winter. One of the 9's is still closed.

The fairways were in great shape for the most part. We played early the morning after a very hard and long series of thunderstorms. Other than having to play the 90 degree cart path rule, you would not have know that it had rained at all. The only complaint that my son and I had was that the cart paths need to be redone. It seemed that almost every hole had concrete uplifted . We will play it again next trip down.

I went as a single and got paired with 3 other guys. Was a great group, we had a good time. Tee boxes and fairways were good (not great) conditions. Only 2-3 greens were in bad shape. Apparently most courses down here are rough in one area or another due to the winter. Clubhouse had a good pastrami and swiss.

Made online reservstions. Drove 2 hrs to get to a course , that at one time was excellent. The starter shows us the putting green which is mostly green dye or paint?? And says the greens are better than that, but that we would have to play part of egret and Heron courses , and that Ibis was closed. Out of 18 holes . 18 holes had greens with less than 30% grass. A couple actually looked like a painted tennis court or something. Sand trap full of water from who knows where because it was dry and dusty . Place desperately needs fertilizer and some water on the grass not trap. After the game we asked what happened to the course?? Hard Winter they said... Its May . You can at least rake the traps..we have played Pine Hurst and some old country courses too that wasn't near this bad.I won't be fooled again and spend my hard earned money on this less than a old country course for the price of resort golf..!! Should not be taking tee times with that kind of course conditions!!!!

Played on 4/21/18. Called a few days in advance to check on course conditions because I had seen some poor reviews online from a couple weeks earlier. The guy in the pro shop told me on the phone that Egret was in "near perfect" condition and that Heron had a "couple bad places". Let me tell you, it was the worst course I have ever played. The layout is great but the greens and the fairways were unplayable. Fairways had NO GRASS and were hard as a rock. The greens were a disgrace. They were painted green and felt like concrete. I know that several courses down here had a rough winter. However, flat out LYING to a person just to get their money is down right criminal. This course use to be one of the best in the area when Bluegreen ran it. Current management should be ashamed. I will be filing a complaint with the BBB and the NC Secretary of State. I am sure they will not reply to this post. Again, poor management!!! STAY AWAY!!!!

5/3/18, course still has hardly any grass on the greens. Looks like green tennis court or hard packed painted dirt.. seen the starter, pro shop attendant and two cart guys, no one mowing the weeds , cleaning or anything..course is worst ive played. Its like everyone has been laid off .
