New management making gains.
Summerbrooke is still a work in progress. Played on 10/15/2014 and previously played 9/19/2014. I will contrast the two dates to highlight the gains the new management ( Pope Golf ) has attained.
9/19: Most greens barren and covered with sand after aeration. Multiple temporary greens placed in fairways. Fairways thinly covered with grass and hard. Cart path is almost impassable in places.
10/15: All greens except #4 covered in new, closely cut turf. #4 green is a temporary small 20ft diameter circle located in the fairway 5yds short of the true green. #4 green is still under repair and mostly bare. Tee boxes were softened due to 7in of rain the previous day. All water hazards were filled with water ( 7in of rain! ).
I played solo during midday. I received excellent attention from staff. Grounds crew very active making repairs from major rain event ( clearing limbs, re-sanding washouts, roping off sinkhole, etc. ). The sprinkler system is nearly 90% full operation. The fairways are now able to be watered. The tee box on some holes would still have been rock hard had it not been for the 7in of rain. Ground crews have been focused on greens, sprinklers, and fairways. The rough in some area is extremely rough. The tee box turf is an assortment of grasses mixed with weeds. This is not a professional event caliber course; but could be with continued effort from the management team.
There is plenty of good to enjoy at Summerbrooke. The layout for a residential course is spectacular. Improvements can be seen everywhere ( new gas-powered Yamaha carts, 19th hole menu, irrigation system and drainage, turf replacement, membership rates, etc. ).
If the improvements continue during the slower winter months; Summerbrooke should be ready to host events and be on everyone's recommendation lists by spring 2015.
Value Round
The main point to this course is that the $15.00 GolfNow rate for 18 holes is so cheap it is worth it. They have some quality issues with the course, but they are working to improve them.
-Approximately 4-5 tee boxes are very hard ground and it is difficult to push a tee in.
-Holes 4 and 7 have "substitute greens" (a flag in the fairway before the green) while they work on them. The starter told me they should be done after Labor Day weekend.
-Greens are better than they were 1-2 months ago, but they are still below average. Patches of dead grass and sandy areas are common.
-Places that appeared to be water areas in the past have been dried up for some time.
putter not required
greens are not puttable. thick wiry bermuda sprinkled with crab grass and bumps. layout is great, though. you would only play here if you are looki g for scenery.
Summerbrooke needs more maintenance
On the positive side, there were very few people playing during the mid-day heat, so that was good. The course is ragged. The fairways are coming back, but the greens make keeping score a joke. Any shots that go into the rough result in lost balls. The rough is simply appalling. I lost 8-10 balls (2 in water so they're on me) because the rough is ridiculous!
This course could be an excellent place to play, but not until proper maintenance is done. The holes are poorly marked - I never did find 17 and 18! There was no sand for divots, and no water on the course. But if they ever get that place in good shape it will be a great course to play.
Fairway Greens
They were doing maintenance on the greens on multiple holes and cut a hole in the middle of the faiway; worse than not getting to play the hole at all I suppose. Would've like a warning though.
Made a Tee time reservation on Golf Now and the cashier pressued us into starting earlier because there was a big group that wanted to play at that time. Not a big deal, but could've been handled better.
good day with my two boys
good value for the money
greens need improvement
had a good time with my two sons on this hilly course in tallahassee. liked the gas carts
This is the worst I've seen Summerbrooke in about 20 years.
Complete shame of a once great course. One of my favorite designed courses around, but has gone down hill drastically in recent years. I wish a new management company or maybe the City of Tallahassee would take over and redeem this course. I wouldn't pay anymore than the $10 on the Golf Now app that I paid to play yesterday.
Lil' Help Here!
Oh those poor greens. Thank goodness we got a good rate, unfortunately some of the greens are in very poor shape.
Poor experience, would not recommend.
The course was in better condition when it was out of business . The greens were unplayable and the fairways were hard as rock. There were some locations of good grass but not where your ball would ever end up. I would not recommend this course and I would advise you to spend a little bit more money at another nicer course for a better experience.
Greens are burtal!
We went knowing the greens were bad but we couldn't have realized how bad. Almost no grass to putt on. Its basically a glorified driving range course. No need for a putter. If you wanna just work on driving and irons this course is fine. If not take the time and spend the money to got further south to Southwood or Seminole or Hilaman for that matter.
Good value for the money but terrible sandy greens! Fairways were in great shape.
This is the first time I have played this course as I always play Seminole Golf Course. I would say its worth it to pay a little extra to play at Seminole versus here. The fairways are in pretty good shape but I can't use a bad enough word to describe the putting greens. Green is not the right word either. They were 95% sand. There was no way to read you putts and they jumped and hopped on every putt.
Overall minus the greens, the golf course is in pretty good shape. I have heard that it was terrible before so it looks like they have made improvements. I didn't see any bathrooms on the course other than the clubhouse but many holes meet around the clubhouse so wasn't a problem. I did not see a cart girl for snacks or drinks at all so not sure if they have one or just wasn't working on a Saturday.
They say 15,16,17 are the best holes in Tallahassee. I wouldn't say the best but I would say unique and fun to play for sure.
I would probably play again just to switch it up from the Seminole course I usually play at. I would say it is more challenging and not as open as Seminole and I did lose more golf balls here than I ever have at Seminole.
Awful condition
Before the previous owners went bankrupt, they were at least able to grow some grass on the greens. Now, not one green had any grass on it. Even half of the tee boxes were just weeds and so hard you couldn't get a tee in them. It's a shame too as it really is a fun course with some great holes. Not sure how the new owners are going keep it open with the conditions it's in but I hope they can turn it around cause it's a fun course at a good value.
NEEDS EXTENSIVE WORK
Course has so much potential which is why I came back even though the last time I played the condition of the course was bad. Well, it's even worse now. The only green that is that color is the putting green. All the other greens have about a 2 foot radius around the hole that is green, but the rest of it is just mud, and dead grass. No marshall or starter on the course so place of play was terrible. I won't come back until a professional crew comes in and redesigns the course or at least tries to bring the greens back.
Great old florida feel
Long, open course with great views and rolling hills. Greens and cart path could use some work but for the price you couldn't ask for more! We enjoyed it and the staff was super friendly and helpful!
Course still needs work done.
The course difficulty is about a 3.8/5. I say this mainly because the tee boxes and the fairways are very very narrow. So you have to be extremely good at hitting straight off the tee box. I like the layout of the course and the clubhouse and the golf carts and the staff is very nice. But they really need to redo all the fairways and 16/18 greens. The greens need to be air raided and cut. The fairways need to be completely re done. All the fairways are like hitting off concrete.
this course offered a good rate
The condition of the course was below average and there was no marshal to help speed up play. We waited to hit almost every shot.
Steadily Improving
As a Tallahassee native, I remember when Summerbrooke first opened. I've played this course at it's best and at its worst! Sadly a few years ago the course fell on very hard times and was not kept up at all.
I carried my office staff out for a round and am very impressed with the direction the course is heading. It still needs a little work, but its one of the best values in Tallahassee at the moment.
Kudos to the staff and the new management company out there. Great service, challenging course...keep heading in this direction guys! Its the right way!
More staff needed
This course is actually pretty good.the greens are well-maintained and the fairways are pretty open. however the staff is almost nonexistent. I had to grab my own beer at the turn because no staff was present in the entire clubhouse for a good 10 minutes and when the employee finally showed and asked me what I was doing I simply replied "waiting on you"
we also waited about 15 minutes for someone to greet us in the pro shop upon arrival. Recently this course has closed and reopened many times due to bankruptcy and debt. unfortunately it shows. Beyond all that I can't complain too much when I use golf now and only pay $10 for 18 holes and the cart.
Still needs work
The course is improving and it's early in the season. Has several greens that need improvement and it's tough to tell where the fairway is. Tee boxes are greatly improved. Still using gas carts.
The layout is challenging even without a lot of bunkers. Greens are small, trees come into play in every hole unless you hit it dead straight. Lots of indulation and has potential, but still a work in progress. But that's how it's priced.
So happy to see Summerbrooke coming back! Now that the irrigation system is working, the greens are filling in nicely and in short order we will once again have a great and challenging course! Be sure to book your tee times, particularly on the weekends, as the course has been quite busy. Better yet, take advantage of the great membership discounts before they are gone and the prices go up.
