Nice go-to course
Skybrook has come a long way in the last few years. Course conditions are good with healthy Bermuda rough lined fairways. Course layout isn't my favorite due to the abundance of uphill second shots. $39 for 18 holes and lunch is a great value.
Good course...good value
Played on July 4th. Pace of play was slow but expected on a jam packed day...round was close to 5 hours. First time playing the course in several years. Layout is challenging enough to be interesting but not overly difficult that you beat yourself up all day. A lot of holes have fairways than funnel to the middle. Greens were in good shape, were not overly fast but were not what I would consider slow either...putted true. Fairways have some weeds in spots but were overall in good shape as well. We paid $39 bucks on a holiday and got free lunch...good value for the Charlotte area.
Time to re-visit Skybrook
If you haven't played here in a couple of years due to the Carolina Trail travesty, its time to return--Skybrook is back to as good conditions as I ever recall. Greens had been aerated but they still rolled pretty well; tee boxes and fairways were just fine. There is still work to do in a number of places, especially hole #7--there needs to be stairs to get golfers from the high cart path down to the green. One of the better grill rooms around for post-round bite and drink.
Excellent Course Experiencing Early Summer Heat and Humidity
My son and I played this course during the late morning hours. We knew it would be hot. I expected a course a cut above the average public course and it is. The only difficulty is that they are just now aerating the greens and the greens on the front nine had a covering of sand. In spite of the sand, the greens rolled amazingly well. When the greens are shortly given all their treatments, they should really be nice. The layout of Skybrook is fascinating. It sits on the edge of a ancient volcano so I learned. The golf shop included lunch with our eighteen holes. My son and I will go back. We enjoyed the course and the surroundings. We had fun despite the greens.
Excellent course, challenging and fun!
First time here and must say the course is in really great shape. Greens are fast and have great roll, fairways are in good shape, and the tee's are perfect. My golfing buddy has played it before which is why I came along this time. Staff is super, meet you at your car and take bags to putting green.
Good course/bad golfer
I really wanted to put up a better game, but I can't blame the course for that. Given the time of year I was quite pleased with the conditions overall. I would certainly play again.
Conditions
This is a very good course. Challenging to say the least. Yardages well marked and greens rolled true. The complaints are these:
1. The course was soggy. Not the fault of anyone but it was what it was. In dry conditions, the course would be much better.
2. No hole layout either on the scorecard or the teeing area of each hole. Not a problem if you're a regular but it helps if you're not.
not bad
Course was not in the best of shape. Probably would be better to wait until Spring to visit again.
Sunday funday
Me and my golfing parter have been coming to this course for the past few months due to the ease of the drive since it's off the new 485. Using golf now to get good t times.
Course is beyond great for the $$$. Greens are quick but not super fast.
Green roll smooth and true
Fairways "if your in them" are great
Staff is great and have been very friendly. The members we've felt with on the course early Sunday's have been very nice and welcoming.
Course conditions
This is a very good course. The issue I had was that it does not drain very well after it rained 4-5 days prior. Several holes were still very wet on the front nine.
Solid Course For Your $$
I had never played Skybrook but had heard good things so booked a 18 hole round with a friend. We were greeted at our car by one of the employees and he directed us in to the Pro Shop to pay while he loaded our clubs onto a car and said they would be waiting out back. The Clubhouse is very nice and the staff inside were just as friendly. We paid $35 for 18 holes and a cart which is an awesome deal compared to most other courses in the Charlotte area. We practiced on the putting green for a short period and then made our way to the first tee.
The course was in excellent condition, excluding some areas where the greens were under repair. Besides that it was an excellent course to play and enjoy the scenery and layout of all the holes. I'm a fairly big hitter and can generally carry a Driver 275-280 yards. Playing from the Blue tee's I was able to hit 5 wood from the Tee on most of the holes and still have a wedge into the green (for reference my 5 wood carries about 235-240). A lot of the holes had trouble (creek, bunker, etc.) at the ends of the fairway and on certain sides of each hole so your Tee shots do require some precision if carried far enough. You are rewarded for a good tee shot though with a short yardage into the Green.
After 9 holes we stopped in to the Clubhouse to grab some drinks and a snack. It was at the bar that I had my only bad experience at Skybrook. The Gentleman working the bar was gone for 5 minutes at least. When he finally showed he had an attitude for no reason. When asking for a Snickers he grabbed one and tossed it on the counter at me. Maybe he was having a bad day and again this was the only fault I found at Skybrook and it could easily be different next time.
Overall it was an awesome course and the staff were really great. For the price it's hard to beat and a really enjoyable course to play.
On it's way back!
This course was caught up in the "Carolina Trail" fiasco and on top of that the winter of 2014 took it's toll on the fairways and course in general. I am very happy to report that the course has come a long way in the last two years and even more so the last year. Since Troon has taken over I've seen a renewed pride in the course and hopefully they'll continue. Definitely will be on my regular rotation for Huntersville courses.
Course has gone down hill
This used to be one of my favorite courses in Charlotte but has gone way down hill this year. The fairways have large burnt out patches and some of the greens are bad too. The rough is way too long and needs to be cut. Our group lost several balls because we couldn't find the ball even though we knew right where it went in off the fairway. The tee boxes also needs to be cut lower/more often.
A very good golf course.
I have played this course 2 or 3 times a season for the past three years (I live 110 miles away), due in part because I still have golfing friends who live in the Charlotte metro area. I really like the layout, it is always in good condition, it is challenging but fair, low scores are achievable, but one must put their drives in the fairway. The bermuda rough does not lend itself to making quality approach shots. We always get our rounds played in about 4 hours, I enjoy playing this golf course a lot.
Close to home
Golf course was in really great shape considering we haven’t had much rain this summer, 5”below normal. Got to keep it in the fairway or the rough will add extra strokes to your game. Tee boxes and greens are in good shape, Going to play it again next Tuesday.
Great time
Nice layouts. Personally I like how when one hole ends another begins. Really like the rolling hill courses It really challanges me to hit different shots other than just flat layouts. Will definitely be back there soon.
Skybrook in better condition
If you played this course a few years ago you may have a bad taste in your mouth. However with the new management of Troon Golf this course it on the rise. I paid $40 through GolfNOW on a Sunday morning and it's worth between $40-50 in my opinion. Greens were in great shape as well as tee boxes. Only downside was there were more than a few fairways where my ball came to rest in the fairway and was on mud or dirt. No grass. Outside of the fairway blemishes I thought the course was good.
Won't go back
Cart staff attitudes, a less than ideal practice tee, very slow greens, lots of winter kill, and significant elevation changes made this a less than favorable place for us to want to visit again. Will not be returning.
Nice course
Played here for the first time - nice layout and nice course. Greens in great shape. Fairways were a little splotchy but not bad, very playable. Got around in just under 4 hours. Only complaint was the 1st and 6th holes were cart path only and they are very inconvenient holes to be cart path only - lots of walking which slowed things down some. Great clubhouse, nice carts, and very friendly people. Lots of elevation changes but good, challenging holes. Will definitely be back.
