Great course, terrible pace.
Beautiful course, pace of play was absolutely terrible, needs marshals to keep things moving properly.
Only Arnold Palmer design nearby.
Good course. Layout is challenging for the skilled golfer. Greens usually slightly faster. But it isn’t too slow. Tough track for the better golfer. Newbies and less skilled players should definitely move up one more tee box than usual.
Great course!
Always love playing this course! Challenging and always in good shape!
Greens need some help otherwise course in great shape.
Extremely Slow Play, Fringes & Rough Around Greens Turning Brown
Let’s first talk about the good things about Spencer T. Olin. It has the best weekend rate of $58 of any St. Louis metro upscale course. People are always friendly there too. The tees and fairways are in good shape. Only exceptions were fairway drainage issues on holes 6 & 13. The tee box on hole 16 had some issues.
However, there were more negatives than positives when I played there on August 6. The pace of play was not good. Much of the round had two groups on each tee box. We finally saw a staff member in a cart on hole 13 to try to find the bottleneck.
With the excessive rainfall & heat, the fringes and the surrounding rough around the greens are starting to turn brown on nearly every hole. The worst holes were holes 4 & 16. The front part of the 16th green is starting to show some major stress. The greens were extremely soft, whereby, cleat marks from shoes were easily seen. When hitting into a green, your ball mark would be deep and long, even including some exploding turf. Because of this, many larger, brown repair marks.
I would still recommend the course because of its price and all the greens had no bare/burnt areas. Just soft greens and not the smoothest surface to putt on. Most of the tees and fairways were fine too.
Nice Course
Layout allows room off the tee. One of my favorite courses.
My Favorite Course in St. Louis Area
My favorite layout around St. Louis, Greens were soft as they were keeping them well watered with the heat, so anything uphill was SLOW. Ball marks everywhere.
Fairways were great. I love the layout on this course.
Olin t best public course in area for the money!
Drove 59 minutes to get to Olin T Spenser to play a round by myself and drive was worth every penny. Staff friendly. Senior rate that day $31.00 great. Tee box, fairways and greens all in GREAT shape. Reasonable priced drinks, snacks and food!. Layout challenging, interesting and fair. If you live in the St. Louis mo area drive Alton Illinois and play this course!! An appreciative golfer. Steve
Course was in great shape, especially since its been 100+ and no rain for 3 weeks.
Great shape
The course was awesome shape the greens were slower than usual maybe they’re scared of the heat wave normally it’s like putting on a table top at Spencer
