Better with age
I have been playing this golf course off and on since 1990. It just seems to get better with age. Not much rain in the St. Louis area over the last couple of months, but not a blade of grass out of place. Tees, fairways, greens, and bunkers are superb!
Has always been a wonderful layout. Difficult, but very fair. Incredible test of golf!
Mary and her staff are to be commended for keeping this jewel, a destination for all golfers.
Great layout-excellent condition
This is a Big Boy golf course and you better bring an A game. Tough but fair and in country club condition. Deep green side bunkering unusual for a fee course. Fairways are well defined but also have fairly punitive bunkers. No Mickey Mouse gimmicky holes-just straightforward and demanding. This is the site of many USGA qualifiers and state/regional competitions
Great course
This course has great fairways and greens
Even in this current drought
Fun Layout
Really enjoyed the layout of this course. It was in pretty good shape. We were cart path only due to rain and finished under 4.25 which was pretty good
Rude staff
The blonde lady at the pro shop and also helping in the bar area was extremely rude. On two separate occasions throughout the day she seemed annoyed to help us rolling her eyes and talking about us to the staff right in front of our faces. This was very off putting as my husband and I are polite and happy people. She was not! If you don’t like people maybe customer service is not for you.
Course was in good condition. A little soggy but it had rained the day before and it was busy and cart path only so pace of play was slower.
Overall tho, would not come back solely due to the staff rudeness.
Great Arnold Palmer Layout, Great Deal!
I would definitely call Spencer T. Olin a must-play course in the greater St. Louis area, especially for those on a budget! One of the few Arnold Palmer designed courses in the area (if the only one!), and it does not disappoint! It's not country club conditions, but it's in great shape for a muni, and the layout is creative and unique and a challenge around every turn! No GPS on the carts, but bring your favorite phone app and your rangefinder and you'll be fine! The staff in the Pro Shop and the Cafe were very friendly and accommodating! Looking forward to my next round here!
Best Value Course In The St. Louis Metro Area
Spencer T. Olin has always been in my top 3 courses in the St. Louis metro area, along with Annbriar & Far Oaks. However, with a weekend rate of $54, nothing compares to this value and the quality of course you are playing. No one comes close to this.
I thought Spencer T. Olin was in the best shape I've ever seen it. The fairways were a little firm giving you some extra roll. The 13th fairway still has its drainage issues.
Many other courses should take note of how a starter should be doing his job. The starter actually thanked us for coming out and playing. Wow! He even showed up on hole 12 and asked us how the pace of play was going. Pace of play was good. It always slows down a bit on the more difficult holes on the front (holes 3 & 7).
Get out and play Spencer T. Olin. What a bargain for the course you are getting.
Best bang for your Buck
Great course for the price can not go wrong. Only thing is didn’t have Arnold palmers (no tea) being Arnold Palmer built course need to always have his drink!
Staff in the golf shop and the restaurant were great! Friendly attentive quick to respond to any need we had. We had such a great time we played 36
Awesome tract
God made the land and Arnold Palmer gently laid a beautiful stern but totally fair test of golf on this property. Greens are perfect bentgrass. Fairways are healthy zoysia. The rough is almost totally some expertly trimmed wide blade grass. It is not a tangled mixed breed mess I have encountered on two other courses in this area. It is penal as it should be. However you have a fair chance to find your pro v and recover or make bogey. The folks entrusted to present this property are doing their job impeccably . And at a great price I might just add. So bring a modest amount of talent, choose the appropriate tee box and enjoy. Lastly, there are a number of holes where you can choose the correct smaller club or in the spirit of Arnie you can challenge the hole and land that drive you will always remember. Thanks Arnie!!
Spencer T
The only issue was the pace of play was miserably slow due to a scrambles group that went off a half hour before our tee time.
Ourselves is well kept and player friendly. It is challenging enough to allow the average to good golfer an opportunity to enjoy the ride.
