Red Tail Golf Club
About
Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Massachusetts sprawls across wooded hills, weaving through numerous streams and ponds. It is the first course in New England to be certified as an Audubon International Cooperative Signature. Golfers can enjoy spectacular views from every hole. Named after the Red Tail Hawks that soar above the golf course, the landscape offers classic New England golf with maple trees, birches, oaks, and pines. There are also tall grasses and sand along the fairways and greens, providing a few elements of coastal courses. The Red Tail layout offers a great amount of variety thanks to the diverse landscape. There is an interesting mix of risk-reward opportunities and link-style touches throughout the course. It is no surprise that this scenic and challenging course is one of the most popular public golf courses in Massachusetts.

Perhaps my favorite risk/reward par-5 I've played all year on #4. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 05/03/2021

Signs of course condition improvement abound, like the sod cutouts here on the par-5 2nd. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 05/03/2021

Must play
The safari golf Club played this beautiful corse yesterday .The layout is perfect the conditions were great and the staff treated us like they were thrilled we were there .
This is a great Golf destination!!!!
A challenging course for a below average golfer. A typical New England style course in that should the fairway not be hit, the ball is in challenging wooded areas.
Great Course, Great staff, Great time
We decided to play at red tail because a friend recommended it and told us it was the best public course in MA. We thoroughly enjoyed the views and beautifully maintained grounds. After a full 18 we all wanted to continue and revisit a few of the holes because the level of difficulty and how satisfying they were. Everyone we dealt with in the pro shop and bar was professional and friendly and Claire made sure we were set up for the second 18 by giving us with fresh carts and encouraging words! Would absolutely recommend this course if not for the unreal gameplay, the classy and professional staff! Will be back in the near future!

Conditions poor again!
I play here a few times a year and love the layout. However, every now and then, they stop taking care of this course. I paid $109 to play a 5+ hour round. Terrible value. Fairways were in great shape, but greens and tee boxes were beat up. Sand traps were the worst - we referred to them as gravel traps. A ranger came by several times to comment on the slow pace and how he was moving the groups along but it never improved. To pile on, they had 1 kid working the bar/restaurant. Yes, 1 person on Mem Day. They aren't even trying anymore. They need someone new to manage this place. It's too good to have poor management.
Great Track
It's always fun playing here. Despite the rain, the course was in tremendous shape and the greens were still very fast. I look forward to playing here again.
My favorite public course in MA
They care about their course and it shows. Greens are always in great shape, fast and consistent. really fun layout with a lot of unique and challenging holes, especially the home stretch. Holes 14-18 are awesome with 18 being one of the best finishing holes around. Good value for the money especially considering it includes unlimited range balls and you can hit off grass.
Bar/restaurant is good but they lack any sort of locker room/changing area, only real downside. Pace of play can get slow sometimes but they are usually on top of it, I have seen the rangers giving groups warnings and keeping them moving.
Great course, great condition
Very fun yet challenging course. So many bunkers! Sand all of the fairways and protecting most of the greens so our group spent a lot of time getting out of them. Overall, the course is beautiful and has sprawling fairways and greens that are all in perfect shape. No bad holes or areas that we found. Varying degrees of elevation and some awesome views. Would go back and well worth the money especially during the week.
Play here if you get a chance!
Played here with the Safari Club. What a treat! A challenging course in superb condition and with great views. The staff is welcoming and very friendly. Would love the opportunity to play this course again.
Safari Club Red Tail review
What a great track, but bring your "A" game or play the green tees
A test for all levels of golfers, My only regret is i never got to play the tips when i was a real golfer
Great greens - they were just the right speed
Enjoyable Course
Played here with the Safari Club on 10/16. Cool and breezy day, which made club selection a little difficult on some holes. Very interesting and challenging course that was in very good condition. Staff was very accommodating to all our needs. Enjoyable day!
Safari Club Outing
Very nice track. Greens were nice, just the right speed for me. Hope we play it again.
Fantastic
Wow. This course is absolutely gorgeous. Huge elevation changes make for gorgeous views and a difficult time gauging distances. It is extremely well kept. Those greens were brutal though. They are all fast and have multiple tiers. The pin placements were cruel today with many on the edge of a tier making any misses fall to the next. Was hoping to play it with some bright foliage but everything was still green. If you have the chance to play this course, jump at it. I will definitely play again.
Fantastic Experience
One of my favorite courses I've played this summer. It was an incredible experience. The large bunkers create a difficult course, but I liked that unique aspect of it. Overall, the conditions were great. I played in the afternoon so it was significantly cheaper. The food was also very good.
Perfect conditions
What a great course! Fun layout, perfect greens, fairways, tee boxes....the grill has great food too. I would say this is a must play for anyone who lives in New England.
Distinctive, lovey course
Red Tail still stands as a unique course in Massachusetts. It has many distinctive and dramatic holes. Lots of elevation changes, dramatic use of waste areas, greens perched on sides of hills--in one case an old quarry. Fairways are often wider and more generous then we typically see in New England, but there are bunkers aplenty, deep swale, steep drop-offs next to greens, and lots of large, sloping greens. There have been times when the course maintenance has seemed to slip, but today it was lovely and in good shape. And even with strong, gusting winds today, we had a great day on the course today.
Great Weather Day...Great Course!
Played this course on the 17th with the Safari Club. Many of our members had to travel quite a distance to get to the course, but it's well worth it. It's one of the highlights of our schedule each year. This year was no exception as the course was in excellent condition throughout. Challenging test of golf with no two holes alike and many elevation changes to make for a very interesting round. You won't get bored with course! The staff was very accomodating, friendly and organized from the time we arrived and throughout the day. Looking forward to playing it again next year.
Safari Club Outing
This is one of the best if not the best course that the Safari Club has played this year. Every fairway and green was superb. I would love to play there again .
Best Course played
I had the pleasure of playing this course with my friends in The Safari Club . What a beautiful course it is, especially in the fall, with the foliage. The course was in immaculate shape with contoured greens in good shape.Kudos to the maintenance crews for keeping up with the leaves and acorns, although the noise of the blowers and vacuums were annoying at times, it's that time of year folks!
Make sure your bunker game is in good shape as many strategic bunkers will test your mettle. Par 4's are moderate length and par fives offer birdies or better if you want to run the gauntlet and challenge the course. 18th hole is an exceptional closing par 5 , Hit a good tee shot to left side of the fairway and give it a go from a downhill lie just over 200 yds over a pond with trouble long and right and bunkers left. How lucky do you feel?
