Red Tail Golf Club
About
Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Massachusetts sprawls across wooded hills, weaving through numerous streams and ponds. It is the first course in New England to be certified as an Audubon International Cooperative Signature. Golfers can enjoy spectacular views from every hole. Named after the Red Tail Hawks that soar above the golf course, the landscape offers classic New England golf with maple trees, birches, oaks, and pines. There are also tall grasses and sand along the fairways and greens, providing a few elements of coastal courses. The Red Tail layout offers a great amount of variety thanks to the diverse landscape. There is an interesting mix of risk-reward opportunities and link-style touches throughout the course. It is no surprise that this scenic and challenging course is one of the most popular public golf courses in Massachusetts.

Signs of course condition improvement abound, like the sod cutouts here on the par-5 2nd. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 05/03/2021

Best Course played
I had the pleasure of playing this course with my friends in The Safari Club . What a beautiful course it is, especially in the fall, with the foliage. The course was in immaculate shape with contoured greens in good shape.Kudos to the maintenance crews for keeping up with the leaves and acorns, although the noise of the blowers and vacuums were annoying at times, it's that time of year folks!
Make sure your bunker game is in good shape as many strategic bunkers will test your mettle. Par 4's are moderate length and par fives offer birdies or better if you want to run the gauntlet and challenge the course. 18th hole is an exceptional closing par 5 , Hit a good tee shot to left side of the fairway and give it a go from a downhill lie just over 200 yds over a pond with trouble long and right and bunkers left. How lucky do you feel?
Great Course
Great Course. I enjoyed the layout, which suited my eye very well. Course was in excellent condition, greens rolled very true. Amenities are a bit lacking. Driving range is short, couldn't hit anything over 200 yards. Food in the clubhouse was mediocre.
Great layout but a little inconsistent
Certainly a top 10 public course in the state of Massachusetts based on layout alone. But today the course was a little inconsistent. The greens were slow, fast, slow, fast and the bunkers went from soft sand to hard pan from hole to hole. The staff was pleasant, especially the person in the tent at the turn. I will certainly play this course again but for today's trip to Red Tail the course was not up to its usual standards.
Take customers for granted
This is a beautiful, interesting and fun course. I have played a number of times and love it. Unfortunately, I don't go often and will not be hurrying back because, once again, I am left with the feeling that the folks there don't particularly care if you do come back. This last weekend play was ridiculously slow. I called the pro shop from the course to let them know and they sent out a very nice young guy to take the heat. His explanation was that they had 287 golfers for the day. In other words, we overbooked, sorry. That was the course's choice, and it's not the first time. Golf isn't fun when you have to sit around for 10 minutes to tee off at every hole. While I'm writing this review, I figure I'll also mention this. I played a couple of years back and paid for my group, over $400. The nice young woman at the counter messed up and my card never got charged. Called a week later to rectify the mistake. The response? Thanks. Now, I didn't call to get a freebie, etc, but because it was the right thing to do, but what kind of people don't thank you for something like that with a free drink or something?
Top Public course Beautiful layout
I'm a member of the Safari golf club from Western Ma. This was my second time playing this great course.
Kathy in the pro shop was a delight to deal with very pleasent and up beat! Mark and Myles the cart team were very friendly and couldn't do enough to make our day great ,very friendly and professional. It gets better the starter Don was also very friendly and gave us a lot of very helpful information about the course. Now for the best part of the day ,the golf course !!! beautiful
Not a blade of grass out of place the fairways were in perfect shape and the greens were pure and fast.
I see why Red Tail is in the top 50 public courses in US. Play it one time and you will have to return many times .
What a fantastic venue!!!!
We played with the Safari Club. Truly a premier group of golfers ( both women and men ) that travels throughout Massachusetts, Vermont, and Connecticut. The Safari club plays courses which are highly rated. And this was exceptional!
Fantastic sceneries. Outstanding greens and bunkers. A very friendly and helpful staff. In addition, the club pro was extremely knowledgeable and gave a great summation of the history of the course and pointed out many unique features. OUTSTANDING!!!!!!
Would be hard to beat this course!
Our Safari Club golf group scored a major deal when we got to play this outstanding course. With many doglegs, significant elevation changes from tee to green, and perfect conditions, this course rates as a bucket list course as it is that good. Each hole seems isolated from others with the scenery exceptional. While the layout is fair and without gimmicks, the course plays quite difficult.
Loved Playing there
We played with a large group from the Safari Club the course was great and full of history. The staff was very helpful and friendly.Looking forward to playing this course again.
Beautiful Course
We played this course as part of our Safari Club outing on a very cool, sunny day. We were delayed due to frost but the wait was well worth it once we got going. The course was in good shape, and was challenging for the first time playing it. I'll be looking forward to playing this course again next year.

I RECENTLY PLAYED THIS GOLF COURSE WITH THE SAFARI GOLF CLUB OF WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS
ALL I CAN SAY IS WOW
PGA WRITTEN ALL OVER IT
CAN'T WAIT TO PLAY IT AGAIN
Very cool layout
Good luck if you walk. Bring extra pills.fabulous par 3's .tees shots fair, perfect fairways, greens very undulating. Pick your poison with the tees. Back ones must be brutal. Loved it.
RED Tail SUPER GOLF
Our foursome played last week and we had a great time. The people at Red Tail were super and gave us a history lesson about the course. It was very interesting . The course was in super shape and we had a great time. The greens were fast and true and the overall all course was it tip top shape. I will go back again.
Fantastic, absolutely FANTASTIC!
I shared a day with the Safari Club at Red Tail recently and now I can easily understand why this great venue is considered by many "THE" premier golf course in the northeast!
A simple WOW doesn't seem adequate, but it certainly expresses my thoughts about this place best
Revied before
I reviewed this course in 2012 and I am happy to say its back. My last review was harsh and deservedly so. After being invited to a tournament yesterday my assessment has changed. The 5 hour round was only due to the fact that it was a fundraiser and we all know how those go. Course condition was almost back to what it was 5 yrs. ago.Staff was friendlier the clubhouse is beautiful and the food was very good. Great day!
Some condition issues
This is my favorite public course within 45 of Boston. That being said, it was in fairly rough shape today. It seems like the tee boxes were recently aerated, so they're fairly soft and sandy. The greens are also in fairly rough shape and are incredibly slow. Lastly, the 3rd green is basically out of commision, 90% of it is roped off.
I'm sure Red Tail will look better in a few weeks, but I really can't believe they're charging full price with the course in this condition. I really thought the course would look much better at this point in the year.
course isnt being taken care of.
They could have cared less that I was there, they had barely moved a leaf. I only paid $30, if I had paid the full rate of $65 I would have blown a gasket!
Value
Thanks to golf now red tail was affordable, normally in eight dollar range, wonderful experience. Scott
Great features
The course was in pristine shape as the fairways had no divots. The greens were average speed with contours. It was a beautiful layout with unique holes
