Red Tail Golf Club
About
Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Massachusetts sprawls across wooded hills, weaving through numerous streams and ponds. It is the first course in New England to be certified as an Audubon International Cooperative Signature. Golfers can enjoy spectacular views from every hole. Named after the Red Tail Hawks that soar above the golf course, the landscape offers classic New England golf with maple trees, birches, oaks, and pines. There are also tall grasses and sand along the fairways and greens, providing a few elements of coastal courses. The Red Tail layout offers a great amount of variety thanks to the diverse landscape. There is an interesting mix of risk-reward opportunities and link-style touches throughout the course. It is no surprise that this scenic and challenging course is one of the most popular public golf courses in Massachusetts.

Great undulating course with plenty of interesting holes
A great way to spend a round; interesting and challenging holes with one of the best layouts in new england; well maintained
What Happened to This Course???
I remember when Red Tail was the hot new course in Massachusetts. It was a very challenging course, in great condition and was all about positive attitude. I had not ventured there for 4 years and was very excited to be playing there yesterday. The 40% off deal on a mid-afternoon tee time via golfnow.com made the deal even sweeter. I pulled into a 1/3 full parking lot and figured it was not that busy a fall weekday. I checked in at the pro shop, and after a little confusion about my pre-paid fee, I was unenthusiastically told "the keys are in the carts and there are balls on the range." The range was in rough shape. Mats only and they were beat up. The range balls were dirty and equally beat up. Crude, hand written signs offered rules for the range. About 10 minutes before my tee time I drove to the first tee to see the starter, but there was no starter on duty. The twosome ahead of me showed themselves to the tee and then another single and I surmised we were next on the tee. Playing the first hole I realized this was not the same Red Tail I had played in the past. The tee box looked as though the markers had not been moved for days. The tee was healthy, but not where the markers currently sat. The fairway had pock marks of non-grass areas, and there were many wear spots from the tires of the mowers. Ropes guided us on and off the fairway, leading us over neglected areas of dirt and rocks. Up on the green, the grass was spotty and there were more wear marks and dirt patches on the borders of the green. My playing partner told me they had "lost" most of the greens during the summer and this was the best it had looked in months. Really? This was the case on most every hole, some worse than others. Now I will say 75% of the playing areas were good and green grass covered. The divots in the popular parts of the fairways were out of control though and there was no sign that the crew had been out on a divot filling mission in some time. In fact I only saw one crew member working, and he was blowing the remnants of the native grasses that had recently been mowed down, off into the woods. The course was littered with dozens of crude hand written signs crafted on the back sides of outing sponsor signs directing golf carts here and there. Amazingly there was no ranger on the course, who could have helped speed up play, that was dragging along at a close to 5 hour pace. Over the last 3 holes, the pace of play picked up, allowing the last few groups on the course, including us, to finish before it was totally dark. It was a long, disappointing day at Red Tail. The course may be very busy with members and public play on weekends. I cannot imagine paying, $80, $90 or $100 to play this deteriorating course and at a snail's pace to boot. I would say this course in its current state of chaos is a $60. course MAX! I am not sure if it is gross mismanagement, total apathy or the economy that has wrecked Red Tail. I hope they can turn things around and find their way back to greatness. At the present time it is just living off its past reputation and headlines, but that will not last much longer. Remember the fate of the original Shaker Hills? If management at Red Tail does not wake up and get moving in a positive direction soon, other courses will be getting more of their former golfers, who want fair value and signs of sincere effort for their big greens fees dollars.
top 5 public in mass.
Beautiful course, many steep bunkers, lots of elevation change.
Rated number 1 in mass for a reason
First of all we got a great deal on golf now $40 and we were allowed to go out half an hour early. I played here about 8 years ago when it was fairly new. Red tail has matured into a great course. 7000 long yards from the black tees make par 4's and 5's tough par 3's somewhat shorter but stunning holes. From the opening tee shot to the last putt it's all we expected. Tough tee shots reasonable 2nd shots and very nice greens that you can two putt. Thank you golf now we play here for less than half there price at this time of year. A great golf day at red tail.
Great layout and fun course
Everything I look for in a course. Course was in good shape (greens look like they have recovered from earlier issues) and is a great layout that provides some room off the tee but still challenges you on the approach and around the greens. Adds up to be a very fun round of golf... probably my favorite in the Boston area at this point (beats Granite Links, Shining Rock, and others in my opinion). Full rate is a little expensive but if you find the right deal you absolutely will not regret it.
It's Back
Earlier this year , in the summer, I wrote a poor review re; the conditions of the course, primarily the greens. I would now like to commend the staff at Red Tail for what must have been a great deal of work. Played there yesterday- the greens are in terrific shape- same for the sand traps. I know where I'll be playing my fall golf.
Great layout
I have played there a couple of times. They were aerating some of the fairways and a few others needed a little more attention. It is a great track though.
Great Course
Red Tail is a course I try to play at least twice a year especially in the fall. Many elevated tees leading to wonderful views & challenging holes. Slope of 129 with 6100+ yards from the gold tees tests most golfers. A few fairways need attention while all the greens were in excellent shape. Driving range included in cost.
great design
Well maintained, enough tees to handle multiple handicap levels. Great hole variety.
Fun layout, great greens
The course was in great shape besides the lack of repairing divots/ball marks. Played close to a 5 hour round despite being the 3rd group out which is pathetic in my opinion, no rangers on the course probably induced that happening. Couple of times they fore-caddied. Other than that wide fairways and big greens makes for easy, fun golf
There should only be one Red Tail. This one!
Go ahead. Do an online search for Red Tail golf in the United States. You're going to find many courses with this name. After playing Red Tail outside of Boston, you'll agree with me that this is the only one worth talking about. This property is rich with history, outstanding people and a captivating 18 holes. There are more than a few times during my round, that I pulled out a camera before I pulled out a club when arriving at the tee box. I loved all the elevated tees and you don't need to play from the championship tees to hit from them either. This is not only a beautiful golf course, but it is fun for the big hitter off the tee OR the shotmaker who likes to smartly work his way around using every club in the bag. So MANY fun holes to play that work with the natural contours of the land, like both Par 3's on the back and the awesome Par 4 17th. And there's only one place to lose a ball in the water on the entire course, and it is on your approach to the Par 5 18th. Absolutely loved it. So please do not confuse this Red Tail or associate this Red Tail with any other golf courses carrying the same name, it would simply be an insult to anyone who has played here.
Love the course...would play more if closer to home and less expensive.
Thanks to Golfnow this was the second time I was able to play this wonderful course (nice discount). There were a few greens that were in need of some attention but the holes were kept far enough away from those area as not to effect any putts. The fairways were beautiful and the employees were very helpful.as always .
This is a fantastic course that is a must play if you get the chance.
Needs a refresh- new carts, divet policy
I remember the first time I played here a few years ago - pristine course!
Today it is just okay. Needs a refresh with a divet policy, and new carts. The brake on two of the carts I used was almost non functional!
Great layout, just needs a little TLC.
Currently, not worth $100 fee. I would pay $50.
Long drive for a great price but condtions were poor
Lets start that the price was right at $52 and worth the 1 hour drive to play a course I had not played in 6+ years. I remeber it as being challenging and in great condtion but it also gets a ton of play. The staff and course people were very nice. The course overall was not it great condition. The greens had disease and were very bumpy plus they played very slow. The course was having the greens filled with air so that there were holes all over it. Machines were loud as they punched into the ground.
Pace of play was slow at just shy of 5 hours. Divots everywhere on both the tee boxes as well as the fairways. Greens were fairly soft and no ones knows how to fix a divot which is not the courses fault. Cart person showed up once in a 5 hour round. No need to go back.. Plymouth has courses just as nice for the same money or less.
Beautiful course, Greens and Tee boxes were in great shape.
All the holes are signature hole quality. I recommend this course. Very challenging, could be difficult for beginners
Excellent public track
As good as any public golf course in the state. At least 14 of the holes are memorable. There are many chances to lose your ball and that often slows down the pace. But if you play from the appropriate tee, just about anyone can enjoy the round.
Excellent drainage after rain, but the greens were slow and bumpy this summer.
If you use special offers and play in the afternoons, the price is very reasonable considering the quality.
Condition of the course was poor for the price.
I had played the course a couple years ago and it was in pristine condition. I was extremely disappointed in the condition of the course this time. The greens were in pretty rough shape.
Very Poor Condition
Tee to green, very poor condition. Very bad value for $100/round
SLOW SLOW SLOW
:1) tees & greens pretty beat up, 2)started late BEHIND a “social group” of 60 people which caused a 5.5 hour round, 3) the ranger was non-existant until the 16th hole!!! And 4)there seemed to be a “don’t care” attitude to address the slow play. Groups should not be allowed on the course on weekends, or at the very least they should be the last to go out. Let them come in in the dark due to theirslow play. Did I mention they were VERY slow players.
Horrible Greens, very long round...5 1/2 hours.
I have played this course several times in the past. While the layout is great and the fairways were in good shape, it truly suffers from poor greens. Slow , long, and beat up were the consensus of my foursome. Golfers- Please fix your divots!
This person must work for the course. Greens and tee boxes are not in great shape this year. Far from it.
