Red Tail Golf Club
About
Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Massachusetts sprawls across wooded hills, weaving through numerous streams and ponds. It is the first course in New England to be certified as an Audubon International Cooperative Signature. Golfers can enjoy spectacular views from every hole. Named after the Red Tail Hawks that soar above the golf course, the landscape offers classic New England golf with maple trees, birches, oaks, and pines. There are also tall grasses and sand along the fairways and greens, providing a few elements of coastal courses. The Red Tail layout offers a great amount of variety thanks to the diverse landscape. There is an interesting mix of risk-reward opportunities and link-style touches throughout the course. It is no surprise that this scenic and challenging course is one of the most popular public golf courses in Massachusetts.

Signs of course condition improvement abound, like the sod cutouts here on the par-5 2nd. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 05/03/2021

One of the best in the area when it's in good condition
Red Tail is one of my favorite layouts in all of New England. On the site of a former military base the course has a fantastic combination of elevation changes, hazards and forced carries but is not always in the best condition. The greens are usually in fine shape but sometimes the tea boxes and fairways we've a little to be desired. With that being said, this is a course that we play every year
Best in New England
My favorite course in all of New England, there is not one thing not to love about this course. Many tees that you can choose from to hit off (<6000 to 7000 yards). Well maintained EVERYTHING, tee boxes, fairways, greens, etc. Beautiful setting. Must use many different shots with a lot of variety to each hole - well placed fairway and greenside bunkers, some water, waste bunkers along fairways and a lot of doglegs to make you set up and think of each shot. Undulating greens on every hole challenge the reads, well manicured greens run true on each putt. Could not rave any more about Red Tail.
Would have been great if not for the greens.
Finally got to play the much anticipated Red Tail. Beautiful in all respects until you have to putt. Greens were not damaged mind you but they definitely needed to be cut and rolled. Plenty of ball marks. What would have been a great golfing experience left us feeling it was just okay.
A Lot of Water Damage
A little unhappy with the condition. Lot of water damage
What has happened to this course?
Played Red Tail recently for the first time in a while. The prices are up there, the layout is superb, there are great views, but the conditions are not good. On the front 9 the tees were completely beat and the greens were awful. Pockmarked, bumpy, slow, the turf had a number of "issues"; they were almost un-puttable. The greens were in somewhat better condition on the back (only 2 or 3 were in the really nice condition I remembered from previous years). The tees on the back were not in good shape. The fairways in general were all pretty good (wish I was on them more!). It is a shame to see this layout go downhill. I give the course 4 stars and the conditions 2 stars.
Good value for the money and a challenging course from the black tees.
The overall condition of the course was excellent, with the exception of a few greens which were chewed up a bit, and tough to putt on. The fairways and rough were in excellent condition, well manicured for sure. As far as value goes, I teed off at 2:10pm which was a great value at a discounted price of $70 dollars, which included range balls, golf and a cart. The staff is very attentive to your needs and the clubhouse has a tremendous view of the 18 hole which is a great par 5 to end the day on. If you play from the black tees, you will be challenged, but the course is not difficult so you can hit your driver without fear of losing too many balls. I think anyone would enjoy this course wether your handicap is 6.8 or 25. If you get a chance to play this course, please do so because you will not be disappointed.
A very nice layout in deplorable condition!!
I have played the course many times in the past, the layout is interesting, they have battled with slow to mature greens and slight condition issues. Sadly, on my Aug. 1 visit, course conditions were abysmal. Greens had many bare spots, burnouts, and some sort of verticut on about seven or eight of them. The result was that you couldn't hit a putt that would roll anything near true. Fairways had many spots with bare ground. After my round I had hoped to speak to someone from golf ops, the person at the desk said, "there's nobody here, I guess it's (the poor condition) the weather" Obviously, other courses around here have the same weather without these issues!
Great course. Fun and challeging course
Over-all the course was fun and challenging. However, I thought it was a bit over priced and the some of the staff were arrogant. In addition, one of the rangers yelled at us (screamed from a distance away in front of another foursome behind us) for playing too slow, when in fact it was the group in front of us was slowing everyone up. We explained this to the ranger and he continued to be unprofessional. Our foursome individually finished in the 80s for their round. We felt so rushed for the day. We reported this incident to the club house manager and he appeared to listen. However, seemed dismissive and could care less.
Course in Serious Decline
Red Tail has been considered one of the better upscale public golf course. The design is very good with great asthetics. Unfortunately the course has never been in such bad shape. The conditions are horrendous. Some of the greens are unplayable in spots. The signature bunkers on the hillside on No. 2 are being allowed to overgrow probably to save maintenance costs. The waste bunkers look like they haven't been maintained in a few years. The entire facility feels like one that is on the verge of bankruptcy and that would be a shame.
Management needs to reduce the price to $75 with cart during prime hours and $ 60 with cart during off hours. This is not a $100 golf course any more. Reduce the price and get more golfers out on the course. Then use the proceeds to maintain it to past levels. Otherwise, Red Tail is done until the next owner takes over.
Bad year and going downhill fast.
great layout and usually in great shape but greens are in horrible condition and still overpriced! The last golf course in area that still acts like it is 1999 . It is a buyers market and they act like they are pebble beach.
gone way down hill
great layout usaully great shape but greens are in horrible condition
Not Forthcoming
Several of the greens were punched and topdressed....even while we were playing. No mention of it when I called to make reservation nor when we got there. They said they had a new bacteria disease and half of the greens were in bad shape. When the course is in great shape it's worth the money.....but that was not the case.
A tough year
Have been playing this course since it's opening. Unfortunately this year their greens are not up to their standard. Very dissapointing given that other courses in the area have maintained their greens to a better standard.I'll try again in a month to see if improved.
Great layout, needs attention
The course has a great layout. That was about the only great thing to be said. For the price you would think that the course would maintain greens this late in the year. Far too many greens were akin to putting in mud. Most were bumpy and some had large dirt patches. I know the course cannot be responsible for noone replacing divots in the fairway but throwing some seed down would go a long way. Icould be a $100 a round course but under current conditions it is not even worth the deal price of $75 a round.
I had heard nothing but good things about this course, BUT!
I heard nothing but great things about this course so I thought I would go play a round on 7/21/13. It is in the worst shape of any course around the area. They charge $99.00 , which it should be and advertised as Top Golf Course in Boston area. The Greens were in terrible shape, which sometimes happens when not taken care of properly. The course has a wonderful layout, But they shouldn't charge $99.00. Maybe $50.00. Very, very disappointed!!
Slowest game ever
By far the slowest pace I have ever played. It took my 3 man group 6.25 hours to play 18. They try to seem professional by having an old man tell you when your turn to tee off is. But they mix up the tee offs at the 1st and 10th. Had to wait 45 minutes before ring able to tee of at the 10th hole. 2 hours in the front nine and 4.25 to play the back 9. Ridiculous. So fricken slow. And no beer carts or food carts on a Saturday afternoon either. If they are going to charge $100 for 18 with a cart they need to step up their game a bit ad make it worth the money. Won't be playing there again on a nice day.
Course was challenging and in great shape!
This course was in great shape and 95 degrees made it even more challenging! Most all of the staff were super friendly/helpful (ProShop attendant seemed put out). The greens were true and penalize you for not paying attention to the pin placement. You will be hard pressed to find better fairways or greens in New England.
Amazing Course
First visit and had the first tee time of the day and it was amazing! The course was in fantastic shape, staff and maintenance crew were friendly. No divots on driving holes on the tees. Every course should include range balls with a tee time. Definitely agree that this is one of the best courses in Ma. Looking forward to my next visit.
Nice layout but needs work on traps
I liked the layout but, the greens were being protected form the
heat by not cutting them, therefore they were extremely slow. The
sand traps had rocks in them.
