Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club
About
Deerfield Golf Club in Newark, Del., is a 145-acre public course, billed as a “natural treasure.” The 18-hole championship course gets the moniker thanks to its surroundings -- the ancient forest of White Clay Creek State Park. The 145-acre play, acquired by the state of Delaware in 2005, is a par-70, 6,323-yard golf course that features rolling terrain, smooth bent grass putting surfaces and scenic vistas. The mix of memorable, distinctive holes adds to the difficulty, as does the memorable, heavily wooded setting and dramatic elevation changes. Before or after your round at Deerfield Golf Club, enjoy the large putting green, full-service practice range, or lighted tennis and paddleball courts.

Classic Golf Course - near Wilmington, DE
Deerfield Golf Club is in a beautiful setting and presents a classic country club feel. It's well maintained, even during this dryer than average summer. The staff is friendly and courteous.
It's an old style course with an abundance of trees lining the fairways. Just about every hole has it's own unique personality and challenge. Don't complain if you don't have a level lie; better to be pleasantly surprised when you do. It's a bit slopey
Bottom line; it's the course you go to when you're feeling cocky and a bit too confident about your golf game; you'll become humbled quickly. However, as you total up your score, you'll appreciate what golf was meant to be.
Tough course!
Tough but fair course! Many uphill, side hill and down hill.lies to challenge all players. Greens in nice shape.
Only for strong golfers
First the positives: They keep the course in first-rate condition tee to green and it's a very attractive course. The greens in particular was very smooth and predictable for speed.
But the layout is simply ridiculous, particularly in windy conditions like I played in. I didn't have a lot of memory of the course since it had been years since I played it, and didn't remember jsut how hilly it was, with blind all of the course and hard-to-judge distances because of the greens nearly always perched on a significant rise from the fairways. Factor in a 20mph wind and picking a club to use was practically impossible.
Add to all of that the uneven lies you'll get even in the middle of the fairway on many, many holes. Throughout much of the course, the fairway tilt to one side or the other and I don't mean just a couple of degrees. At times it's nearly impossible to stay in the fairway without the ball rolling completely down the slope into the rough. And even if you do keep it in the fairway, the ball can be well above or below your feet, or with a signficant downhill or uphill stance as well. Yuck!
And yet I played well.
The moral is that if you like a challenging course and can control your ball, go ahead and play here. If you're a beginner or just want a pleasant round, this may not be the course for you.
Even better for a deal
Deerfield is probably one of the few places I’d THINK about paying full price. For the Hot deals available, I recommend everyone playing here.
Lots of elevation changes and bunkers guarding greens may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but consistently above average conditions and service make any chance to play Deerfield worth it.
Everything was as expected. 90% all around. Greens were fast , FAST! My gripe is bunkers. Looked like no maintenance in weeks. After going in my first one and trying to play out,( and not doing it on my first try ) I decided I had to rake up a spot to play my next 3 shots. Players shouldn’t have to do that.
Even tho it’s generally a longer round to play ( almost 5 hours for us ) I’ll always return a few times a year.
Still like a private CC
Second round here and nothing changed including the staffs clear desire to make this place like it was
A private high end club
Kudos to all involved in the golf course
You are successful at what you do to keep this course to a high level
I haven’t yet been inside the vast amenities but this was probably the club to be a member at
Want to be treated as member
Play here
Kudos
It may be short on the scorecard but it sure plays long the course is very challenging and in great condition my only complaint is the bunkers they need real sand but we’ll definitely will be back
Like an old Pete Dye set up
Moved to De recently so I venture out to find the area’s golf.
This place is a find. Definitely a prior private course. The building is aging and so is the course. The course is the better for it.
Goly this place is fun if you like to move the ball. The changes in elevation were a real treat since my last stop was in Savannah Ga, it’s flat and HOT. The greens are a blast and where you drop the ball on the green makes a difference between each hole. The members clearly have an advantage over the non members.
I look forward to playing this course several more times.
Kudos the staff for keeping this place up to Private club levels
Horn blew and was not offered a rain check.Paid for 18 holes played 9 doesn’t seem worth it to me.
