Grafarholt Golf Course
I first played golf in Iceland back in 1995. Obviously not a country one would readily associate with golfing but I was surprised to find there were around 45 courses nationwide at that time. Since then the sport has grown and for a variety of reasons Iceland has become a go to destination. Spectacular, pristine landscapes are the primary drawing card which include the Blue Lagoon, glaciers and lava fields, geysers, northern light shows, amazing waterfalls, friendly residents, interesting architecture and culture.
The Reykjavik Golf Club, as it was first known dates back to 1934 making it the oldest course in the country. It moved to its present location in 1963 with only a few holes and a full 18 holes were available for play by 1968. The fairways wind their way through lava and heather with bunkering and a few water hazards thrown in for good measure. Friendly, accommodating staff, great views and an interesting layout make this a golfing experience to remember.
