Fun golf . . . isn't golf meant to be fun?
Tee sheet was full up, yet our group of four played 18 in 4:15. I've played here in March for the past several years and find it a well designed and maintained golf course;
An exemplary muni
Sandridge has been my home golf facility since I moved to Vero Beach about three years ago, and with a few dozen rounds at the Dunes under my belt, I'm happy to say that it has all the main virtues of municipal golf.
The course layout is solid and typical of the late-80s - lots of mounding that no one would mistake for "minimalism," pretty comprehensive bunkering, but a good overall challenge.
Sandridge really stands out, especially among courses in its green fee range, with its conditioning. The greens roll as well as just about any public course you'll play for less than $80 or so, with the added bonus of the fact that at Sandridge, you'll pay a fraction of that (I'm talking $20 in the summer after 1 pm, with cart). The county is constantly working on the course, be it improving drainage, streamlining bunkers or, most recently, adding some back tees.
Finally, it's worth noting how great the Sandridge staff is. Bela Nagy and Jon Clark run the show with the help of a friendly support staff. Every Saturday morning is the "Blitz," a regular Stableford competition which the pro shop staff actually administrates (i.e. keeps scores and doles out winnings). There's a group of regular Blitz players who drive more than an hour to play in the game - that's how well-run it is. And as if all that isn't enough, Sandridge hosts the Indian River Golf Foundation, which is itself a wonderful junior golf program. If more facilities were like Sandridge, golf would be even stronger than it is.
Great mini course
Played with my daughter on our vacation. We were paired up with a member. Greens are in awesome shape, especially for a muni course. Rolled smooth and quick. Work being done to upgrade the irrigation system willl only make the two 18's here rven better..
3:45 for 18 holes. Very interesting and fun layout with many elevation changes not usually seen on Florida coastal courses. Will play here again when back in this area.
Love this beautiful and challenging course. Lots of water. You can even catch a glimpse of a gator every now and then, Wonderful and friendly staff.
This is a Muni?
When it comes to municipal golf courses, you’ll be hard pressed to find one in better condition and with a friendlier staff than Sandridge Golf Club in Vero Beach, FL. I mentioned to Director of Golf Bela Nagy that I had played private facilities that were in worse condition and his response to me was, “Yeah, we hear that all the time.” Sandridge has been recognized as one of Florida’s finest public golf facilities, and with good reason. Golf course designer Ron Garl, design both courses.
Aesthetically, these Ron Garl layouts are pleasing, and require a multitude of shots if you are going to play them well. Garl has made great use of sand and water, which are both abundant in Florida. Each of the courses – The Dunes and The Lakes – has its own island hole; on the Dunes, it’s the Par 3, 6th hole and on the Lakes Course, it’s the par 4, 14th. Be sure to have a couple extra balls with you.
The Dunes course opened in April, 1987 and plays 6,968 yards from the back tee, with a course rating of 72.6 and a slope of 129. At 6,114 yards and a slope of 123, the Blue Tees will give most golfers all the can handle. Most of the ladies will find the Red Tees at 4,967 a good test of their skills and abilities.
The land that the Dunes Course is built on an old ridge that runs up the East Coast of Florida and was once used for mining operations. Water comes into play on about 9 of the holes and can really figure into your scoring on about 4 or 5. Waste bunkers are prevalent on a number of holes as well, so your best bet is to keep it in the fairway.
According to Nagy, the facility did over 115,000 rounds last year. During the peak season (March and April) it’s not uncommon for them to process over 500 rounds a day. With all that traffic, you would expect deplorable conditions, however the maintenance staff at Sandridge keeps the course in excellent shape. There are a lot of pock marks on the greens, especially on the Dunes which I suspect gets a little more play because of its length, marks that would be negated if players just took their time and repaired their ball marks. Nonetheless, these marks don’t really hinder your putting efforts, they just look out of place. They allow walking which, given the layout, is not as taxing as one might think in the Florida heat.
Another thing I noticed about Sandridge is their pro shop; they carry everything golf from hats, shoes, socks, balls and gloves to headcovers, clubs, bags and putters. And what’s best is that they are competitively priced with the big box retailers.
If you’re in the Vero Beach area, you need to get out and play Sandridge and see for yourself the fine conditioning of the course and how down home friendly the staff is. For more information, visit them online at www.sandridgegc.com.
Weekend Couples outing a great success
I arranged with Bela Nagy, the Director of Golf, for 12 couples to play both courses at Sandridge over the weekend. We schedules the Lakes course on Saturday and the Dunes course for Sunday. We arrived on Saturday to find our carts arranged to the side so we could coordinate our participants on arrival (both days). The check-in was smooth and easy and we played the Lakes in less than 4 hours. The Lakes course was in excellent shape and the greens putted wonderfully. On returning Sunday for our round on the Dunes course, again, our carts were set aside and waiting for us. The Dunes course was the highlight. I can't recommend this facility enough. Bela is easy to work with and every detail went smoothly and the staff was exceptionally helpful making for a great weekend.
Course is fairly challenging and tight in some areas.
Great greens, with many traps. A must play course for around the $37-42 range.
Very nice course
As a county course, it is way above it's peers and matches well with private courses. Mature course with well maintained landscape features.
Very pretty layout.
Beautiful golf course in great shape. There are some very pretty holes, you might want to bring your camera. Plays a little short for the low handicapper I would recommend the back tees. We will be back for sure. Great value for money.
Both courses are in excellent condition!
These two public courses are in excellent condition, extremely challenging and fun to play. Even the pace of play is marvelous....these courses are must plays.
Great Course- very challenging and in great condition.
Everything was great. The pace of play was good and the condition of the course was awesome. This is a challenging course with bunkers, fairway undulations, water and a tight tree line. The only negative was that we started 25 minutes after our scheduled t time.
Great Course...Slow Play
The course is very busy. Parking lot was full and grass lots were near capacity. Very long wait to tee off...nearly 30 minutes behind and then nearly 5 hours to play (and we didn't stop at the clubhouse after 9). Course was in great shape for the amount of play it gets. Played from the white tees and many challenging holes from those...could get really tough going back to the blue or gold.
A well maintained tight course fun for all skill levels.
The Sandridge Golf Course provides two 18 hole courses. The Dunes and the Lakes. I played the Dunes yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised at the pace of play (4 hours and 15 minutes) even though the course was quite crowded. The Dunes is a tight course that you will need to be not only straight but precise in your shots off of the tee. I suggest taking the course book provided by the pro shop. There are dog legs and hazards that cut across the fairways, you will need to judge your distance off of the tee maybe using irons to stay safe. The greens are well maintained with a fast too medium speed . A well stocked pro shop and also a luncheonette will provide needed equipment and food for the day. Enjoy!
This course has no homes on it.
A pleasure to play, pure serenity. A public course that is maintained like highend courses.
Excellent course, in great condition friendly staff.
I have played both the Dunes and Lakes courses at Sandridge, and both are equally challenging, in great, condition and offer fantastic flora & fauna while traversing course between shots. I would highly recommend Sandridge courses.
This is challenging, yet fair.
Multiple tee boxes for any skill levels. A little expensive, unless you use golf ow or other coupon type opportunities.
Great golf course and condition.
Very challenging course especially on the back nine.
great course great price
one of the best kept courses around and 36 holes to choose from.
great course !
Very good day @ Sandridge ! We played to Dunes. Greens in great shape, fast ! Next time I'll try the Lakes if can !
