Beware the climb to the 11th and 12th!
Booked at the last moment as they had a completely empty tee time and I'd not played here before. Playing alone I though I'd get round as quickly as I could. Not so much...
Staff in the pro-shop weren't unhelpful as such, just disinterested. No course map available (and on course signage wasn't great). The starter (I think his name was Randy) was very affable.
A little course info would've been really helpful though.
Especially the severity of the climb from the 10th green to the next tee (and the same from the 11th to the 12th tee).
When I say severe I mean you have to be in a buggy. I wasn't. I had my push trolley and the first climb nearly killed me. By the end of the second climb to the 12th tee I felt like I needed an oxygen tank!
The course plays well enough. There's challenge with it being overwhelming. Water hazards and plenty of bunkers (the latter of which my ball seemed unerringly attracted). For the last week of September and 11°c not too bad.
The greens, though, were indifferent having been heavily aerated with, perhaps, an over-generous dousing of sand to follow.
There was a four ball in front of me, which I caught up on the 4th. One of the group asked if I wanted to play through only to be talked out of it by his buddies, which I thought was a bit poor. A Marshall told me later in the round that the group was 'three holes behind" but he didn't seem to try to chivvy them up much.
Decent hot dog at the hut between 9 and 10.
Would definitely play again but next time I'd take a buggy cart. And I strongly recommend you do too!
Tucked Away City Course
This Course is right in the City, but it feels like it’s a million miles away, so peaceful. One of the better courses in Calgary. .
GREAT COURSE......FANTASTIC LAYOUT AND CONDITIONS
I was very pleasantly surprised at just how beautiful this course was. The site lines from the tee boxes, the bunkering and green undulations were very well designed and maintained.
It is a golf course that has two distinctly different 9’s........ The front nine is a Parkland design that follows the bow river and has beautiful large tree lined fairways........very player friendly...... The back nine has great elevation change, water features and demands more precise shotmaking.
Course was in excellent overall condition and was a joy to play
Top 5 of must-plays in Calgary for sure!
Staff are horrible..
Course is over rated given the price and the staff are probably the most unfriendly I've experienced in a very long time..
Great course if you get it on the right day
Valley Ridge is a nice course but nothing special. Everything about it is average including the staff. Not a great welcome by the staff, both the back shop and pro shop. The course is there to make money and that's how your treated. The range is in tough shape, feels like your warming up in the rough. The course conditions are great especially considering the high number of public tournaments they host. The toughness of the course lies in the greens. Fairways and greens are easy to hit but if your on the wrong level your faced with some tough putts. I think the course itself is great but the staff could use some work. Go inside for a bite and a cold one after your round. Food is good and the beer is cold...... What more could you ask for.
