Public for a day
Every once in a while PGA National will open up a course for public play, and this past weekend it was the Estates course, which is off the main resort property in a different, gated community. I was lucky to get a twosome and my buddy and I had a great day. The range has unlimited balls waiting for you, the best short game area I’ve ever experienced (it’s better than at the main resort property), and the putting greens are in amazing shape, just like those on the course. I have played four of the five PGA National courses and the greens are never fast, but they are always in excellent shape, and roll so good. The Estates is an easy golf course, with any drive in the fairway giving a plum look at the green, and those fairways are plenty wide for Florida golf. Those kinda slow greens mean they are easy to hold, and they are relatively flat, with only a couple false fronts throughout the whole 18. Putting is hard enough, I don’t need a lot of break in my greens. As a 12 hdcp, I played better than my index with the exception of a 9 (two balls in the water, the green is protected by 20 feet of canal/pond and I had a tough lie after hitting a poor shot out of the right fairway bunker) on the par 5 ninth hole. The mixed blue/white tees at 6400 yds was perfect for me, with only one long par 3 (about 195yds) and one reachable par 5. As someone who has to hit a driver dead center of the face to get it to go 250, I appreciate an occasional par 5 that’s less than 500 yds. There is plenty of water hazards but little in the way of tree, bush, and other vegetation obstacles, so being able to play your wayward shot toward the green is very likely, punching out not often needed.
The estates is the least demanding of the five at PGA national but that makes it a great complement. The other four are plenty tough, with the Squire being the next most playable for most players.
If you enjoy and appreciate a GREAT place to practice, and like a golf course that is super fun to play and is in great shape, Estates at PGA National is awesome, and was a GREAT deal at $70 during high season. Just an awesome round of golf.
Nice Track
Course was nicely maintained and has freindly staff. Would play again. Would advise on options for snacks and drinks at the turn since the location is far from the clubhouse. There was no cart service around during my day of play.
Nice course but overhyped
Being a pga national course I expected luxury but amenities were fair, examples: no cart girl, bathrooms were gross, limited snack and drink options. The course was beautiful but Ive played less expensive courses that felt higher quality.
Golf at the Estates
This course was a real pleasure to play. Course condition was excellent and just tough enough to make one think. It is on my must play every time we go back to Florida.
Wonderful course
This course was challenging and was in very good condition. The greens were recently aerated but did not present a problem.
Hidden gem
This course is one of six golfing options that PGA national has to offer, with the exception that this one is not on the same premises as the other five. So far I've played in 4 out of the 6 courses, and I would rank them in the following order: 1) Champ, 2) Palmer, 3) Estates (real close to 2nd place with Palmer) and 4) Fazio (just meh). On to the review...This course would tie with Palmer if it shared the same facilities. The course is in excellent condition and has great practice facilities with a driving range and chipping and putting greens. Practice balls are included with the green fee. The pace of play was phenomenal, I got the rare and lucky chance to play by myself which made the round soooo much better than being paired with a bunch of randos. The course is in excellent shape tee to green. The greens rolled pretty fast and true, and are deceivingly tricky. Some of the holes, especially the signature holes were quite difficult, so you must bring your A-game. Playing from the whites, especially for not a long hitter like me, presented itself to be difficult enough. Although the course plays tough, it also plays fair, unlike the champ which is just punishing is some holes (such as the bear trap). I can't wait to return and try to beat my 89, which was not easy to get.
Pricy
The course was in average condition and the layout was fine, I thought that the course was priced too high for for the experience.
Good value
The course is away from the PGA resort We we’re able to play as a two and the pace was excellent. The course is in good shape and the greens were firm. Good value for the money
Nice greens but don’t think I’d play again
Didn’t really see the appeal for the price. Greens were in good shape and rolled true. Perhaps I would have enjoyed the course more during the winter when the course was drier. (Drives in the fairway we’re plugging never to be seen again.)
Amenities on the course were non existent. No range either.
Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. We hope to see you back soon.
