Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club was carved from the sloping hillside of the Coast Mountain Range. Robert Trent Jones Jr. deftly designed the course across ravines, creeks, and waterfalls, which accumulates to over 400 feet in dramatic elevation changes. Jones closely followed the natural contours of the rugged terrain, creating a golf course that blends seamlessly into the landscape. It shares a home with an abundance of wildlife as well including deer, black bears, and a variety of indigenous birds. Douglas firs blanket the course along with outcroppings of exposed granite rock. The generous fairways are lined with trees and deep bunkers are strategically placed throughout. One of Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club's most notable holes is the par-3 eighth, which begins at an elevated tee situated 80 feet above the green with a large pond to the left and granite cliffs to the right.

What a great place!

I absolutely loved this golf course. The views are incredible and you hear flowing water throughout the round making for a serene experience. It has a great variety of holes with some target golf and some “let ‘er rip” tee shots. I enjoyed all of the variety, and the staff is exceptional. The Fairmont hotel quality transferred right over to the course. Even better, great exchange rate for US golfers too!

Fabulous course with unique hazards!

The hazards ranged from momma bear with Cubs to old bear wandering down the path ahead of our golf cart. Snow capped vistas were gorgeous. The greens are in perfect condition and the fairways are too!

Mountain Resort Course

This is a first class place and has the resort feel to it.... Also has plenty of non-golfers on there that don't fix their divots! But really a beautiful track in the mountains with challenging holes. Some of the pin placements were ludicrous to the average golfer but a variety of holes/styles to make everyone happy. Not the cheapest place around but if you double dip - second round is significantly more affordable. No walking on this course- must use carts and by time you get to through first 5 holes, you will know why. Only complaint is the practice facility is a 5 min drive away and they only only open it 30 mins before first tee time... All the tee boxes @ practice facility are slanted - guess they are just preparing you for what lies ahead of the course!!

Challenging & spectacular

This is certainly not a course for the faint hearted. If you want to play without having to think your way around, then this is not the course for you. It s a clever layout in a spectacular setting. I played poorly, lost a good few balls, but loved the challenge and the gorgeous setting. As an added bonus, Matt Denzer, one of Florida’s top golf coaches, is working here again at The Leadbetter Academy during the season.

Not worth it.

This course comes with a big reputation. It does not deserve it. First of all, it has too many "target golf" holes. Target golf is an easy way to make a course look like the designer was so smart. In fact it does the opposite. A golf course should be challenging but fair. Some holes on this course are punitive. If those holes were redesigned the course would be much more attractive. There are some very nice holes, and the views are quite remarkable. But the course was in very poor shape. The fairways were awful. You had to use preferred lies. And the greens were poor, and very slow. While I understand it is early in the season, don't charge mid-season rates. Bottom line it isn't that fun to play, and the conditions made it un-enjoyable.

Mountain Golf

Chateau Whistler offers everything you could expect in mountain golf. Steep Hills, deep valleys, streams, fairways lined with old growth forests. The views from this course almost drowned out the beauty of the course. The greens were fast and putted beautifully and the fairways and tees were in excellent shape. The yardage is deceptive as this course definitely plays longer than its yardage. I highly recommend playing here.

Stunning, playable mountain golf in BC

Right in the heart of the outdoor mountain paradise of Whistler, Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club delivers a true mountain golf experience, one that's playable for every level and won't beat you up too bad. It's max length is just over 6,600 yards, so the lowest handicaps may pine for a little more challenge, but the vast majority of golfers are really going to enjoy this layout. There are uphill and downhill shots, greens with long expansive views of the valley and the collection of par 3s are particularly stunning.

The opening stretch is particularly infamous, playing largely uphill and requires some strong drives and steely approach shots, at times crossing perpendicular hazards. In fact, the front side is a par 37 and the back nine a much shorter 35, so if you can survive out of the gate, you could be in for a strong finish.

The clubhouse is a short drive from the Fairmont Chateau Whistler and, while small, is a very pleasant place for a post-round meal and drink. They even have an at-your-table Caesar service, a Canadian staple, and you can customize yours appropriately.

BC Flavor

Chateau has been one of my favourite courses since I was a teenage. I've always enjoyed a natural wild golf course as apposite to fake over manicured courses. Set in one of the most beautiful places in the world, Chateau is more than a golf course. It's a breath of fresh air, self relfective and inspiring experience. Club house is nothing special, wish they had more amenaties when it comes to change rooms, showers, etc. Highly recommended

Survive the Opening Stretch

My friends and I have played here many times, usually 36 holes to end our annual Whistler trip. Of the 4 top notch Whistler area courses it is the most dramatic with some astounding holes. The first is a relatively simple par 5 but the next 3 par 4s can easily result in 3 doubles or worse on your card; even if you are a very good player. The key is not to get discouraged as I have many times seen players go 50-36 and end up with a decent round.

There are many very fun holes with long downhill carries. If you are hitting your driver ( or even your 3 wood) well and relatively straight you will have a blast. Putting here can be an adventure. The greens are huge and feature large but usually visible breaks. Very important to be on the proper side of the hole.

Almost every time I've played there I have seen a bear and fortunately at a safe distance. You really do feel that you are off in the wilderness. No houses or any other buildings in sight....just glorious mountain views, rushing streams and the odd cursing golfer (sound really carries).

The only negative to me is the somewhat arrogant attitude of the staff. This has curiously developed over the years and is in marked contrast to the very friendly reception at the other Whistler courses. The Fairmont is a high end hotel chain but that should mean better service rather than the sense that you are an annoyance for being there. An example; my partners cart died on the second fairway and after phoning the shop the woman who brought a new one out seemed quite put out by the inconvenience. When we finished the attendant gave my irons a cursory wipe.....still lots of green grass in the grooves. No tip.

Gorgeous Views & Great Staff

My husband and I were in Whistler for a few nights on vacation and decided to go ahead and golf while we were in town. We couldn't have been happier with our experience at Chateau Whistler. We rented clubs (brand new TaylorMade sets) and played an early morning (7:20) round just the two of us. We breezed around in under 3.5 hours and barely saw anyone else on the course. The views are amazing with little to no development on the surrounding property. I've never commented on a half-way house before but wow, impressive! Also, can't say enough nice things about the staff. From the proshop staff, snack bar, half-way, cart staff... everyone was super friendly. We would definitely play this course again if we get a chance to return to Whistler.

Up and Downhill

There are many elevation changes that combined with the course elevation makes club selection a challenge. The greens were in great shape but reading the greens was a challenge. If you pick the recommended tees for your handicap you should enjoy the round. The views from the course are spectular.

A tough day on the greens

This course is very challenging with beautiful scenery. Its standout feature is defiantly the greens, There is a lot of break on all of them and on some of the holes you wont be able to see the break on the greens but trust there is. Make sure to pack an extra sleeve of balls . All in all just a fantastic course.

A Whistler favorite

In my book, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler is every bit the top-notch Canadian mountain golf experience that the Fairmont Banff Springs and the Fairmont Jasper Park offer, minus the history. The two Stanley Thompson icons have about 80 years of history on their side, but the Fairmont Chateau Whistler is comparable in its beauty and routing. There is no better view than watching your ball hang in the air against a backdrop of pines and evergreens in Whistler.
Creeks, rocks and uphill holes constantly challenge players, more than sheer length. If I had to choose one round in Whistler before my death bed, this would be it.
