Love the serene surroundings
Played after the rain, fairways on hole 7 and 9 were pretty muddy. The greens were well kept and playing slow. Played a new ball, hit 7/9 fairways, hit the greens on 3 and 8 for par and birdie. Overall, still a great experience even in the wet environment. Can't wait for the sun!
Justly deserves to be one of the top ten 9-hole courses in the US
Designed by Robert Trent Jones (think Augusta and The Masters). Surrounded by magnificent redwood trees. Very well maintained considering how popular the course is. Holes that are quite manageable if you can hit the ball straight. Holes that are quite punishing if you can't hit the ball straight. Tee shots that are both picturesque and daunting - the fifth tee in particular looks as if you're trying to hit into a ten yard wide gap between trees that are hundreds of feet tall. In reality it's a 40 yard gap, pretty much the standard fairway width but the second cut of rough really -is- a stand of giant redwoods. The golf is very good; the experience is amazing.
Most beautiful, natural setting for golf on God's green earth.
Northwood was crafted through a temperate rain forest of
thousnnd year old Redwood trees. A golf ball, well struck, sails
through the air, framed on a back drop of majestic beauty.
The playing season is all year round, the proximity to the Pacific maintains a moderate climate. The short winter season,
though grey and damp, does not deter the average golfer.
The tree lined fairways reward the straight ball, but working
the ball left and right is helpful on several diferent tee shots.
The greens vary in speed and texture, depending on the amount of sunshine provided by the forest canopy. They are generally slower than the average golf green. They are also
well contoured.
To sum up,I have been retired 2 yrs and play here several times a week, have always been excited and challenged by
golf at Northwood.
Alister MacKenzie designed this course, not Robert Trent Jones (who designed two other very nice courses nearby)
