It's Too Bad...
Got there early. Staff was great! Had lunch, again great! No one else there so pace of play was great (no one in front or behind us). After we started playing, we understood why - the condition of the course was really bad. There was fungus on the greens, holes throughout the fairways, muddy even though it hadn't rained, bunkers were like hard dirt. Overall condition was pretty poor. That being said, the layout was interesting and could be quite nice if the conditions were better.

Made the drive and played this course. My wife and I loved the place, peaceful setting with pines and fresh air. All around the course is well maintained, friendly staff, good food and a pretty challenging round of golf. Gotta love the gas powered golf carts too.
Refund for Closed Golf Course
I made reservations on Golf Now and pre paid to play 18 holes for two. This is non refundable unless the course is closed. The course was closed the entire weekend because of rain. I called the course two hours before my tee time to see how I go about getting a refund. I left a message at the club house (the course was closed) and no one returned my call. I am very disappointed in both Mace Meadows in how they have handled their refund policy and not responded to my email.
You will enjoy your round of golf here
The course suffered some wind damage, but it was being cleaned up very quickly. The people were super friendly. We went on a week-day and could have played the course in 3 hours, but we took our time and watched some deer, enjoyed the mountain views and just had a really great time. You won't appreciate the course, until you play it. Read the card and you think no big deal, but once you are on it, you will marvel at the shots required to score here.
Save this course
This course is basically run by a homeowners committee. People who bought homes on the course pay no dues ever. This perk promotes a lack of money to properly operate the course. The committee is meeting today to determine the future of this course and closing it down will be one of the options to be discussed. The course is nestled in a beautiful mountain setting. The front nine is basically carved into the mountain side and many of the fairways are moderately sloped. The fairways are narrow and lined with very tall mature trees. Tee shots must be accurate and any wayward shot right will end up in another fairway blocked by these trees that are really impossible to shoot over. The back nine can be found in the valley with basically level fairways; however, many of the greens are extremely elevated and most are small. All tee boxes are in need of much maintenance. There are many bare spots close to the green and several of the greens had places that should have been under repair. All this aside, I'm going to play this course again because it is challenging. I hope they don't close the course.
Not maintained; obvious water problems.
This year I played this course in early June and early October. The conditions are the worst I've seen, as I played there regularly (1-2 times/week summer seasons) for the past 10 years. It is member owned & their money problems are reflected in lack of course maintenance. It is a beautiful setting; however, the many maintenance problems negate any positive remarks.
See review below.
This is my home course from my younger days and I started playing here when it opened in the 70's. But I'm very sorry to say that the course was awful. No maintenance..no water..only two persons on the whole course and they weren't doing anything. This is a beautiful mountain area and I was embarrassed that I brought my girlfriend here. The staff..two of them..were very nice and the golfnow special was very good.
Pretty course in a great setting
Great setting for this course. Great scenery, pleasant people and good value
Very dry. But nice views.
Very dry in areas and flooded in others. Trees everywhere.
Beautiful Sierra mountain setting
The sights, smells and sounds associated with playing in the Sierras add tremendously to playing this course. The course itself was in great condition and was not crowded. Gas powered carts are old but very functional. Many holes parallel one another but don't give the feeling or danger of a back and forth muni.
Needs work but great setting
Course needs tons of work! Tee boxes are terrible, greens are very very spotty. If you can get by these issues the views are tremendous. Pines everywhere and great fresh air in the foothills
Unhelpful Staff and a Course in Need of TLC
I had a poor experience here with a staff person who was rude and dissmissive. He did not want to honor my prepaid Golf Now reservation and made me jump through hoops as a result. When I finally got on the course the conditions were so poor I left after only 4 holes.
I would not recommend this golf course to anyone in the future.
This course needs attention immediately!
I have been playing Mace Meadows for around 15 years. It has not been maintained for too long. Very sad!!!
I used to recommend to golfers, for trips to Reno, to stop on the way up but no anymore.
great course
The course condition has greatly improved, fairways, greens were well maintained. The ruff was a little high but I see them being cut. A controlled drive helps keeping you out of the beautiful trees. The price was great especially though golf now. pace was good , middle day wkend 2 of us never waited. that's huge.
This course is challenging for the beginner golfer
I enjoyed playing this course though the slope is kinda brutal. Nice greens and some work is need on the traps. Great elevation change makes for really good shot process.
Nice course but very tight fairways
Pretty nice course but too many lousy golfers who always hit in the trees makes for ver slow play.
Beautiful scenery Some challenging holes.
Friendly staff. Gas carts. The views and scenery is beautiful. A par 5 on the front is tough. Thin opening from the t box for your drive. Use an iron! Not much water . A ball in the deep rogue and its gone. Pines trees line the fairways. A very nice foothills course . Enjoyable course with plenty of challenge .
Early in the season
Overall, the course layout is entertaining -- not difficult, but requires good (not great) shots. It's a mountain course, so expectations in late April / early May are about what one should expect in a lowland course in late February.
As such, the course needs attention. Some of the greens are bare dirt in places, and the sand traps have no sand -- just dirt and even pebbles. That would be tolerable, except for the staff. We had to wait on one hole while the maintenance crew had a 15-minute conference in the middle of the fairway -- three carts, four people doing nothing. After we finally teed off, we spent the next four holes dodging sprinklers, including a stream on the 17th green. The man in the pro shop seemed entirely disinterested in the issue.
What's frustrating is that the course isn't that far from home, so I would be likely to play it reasonably frequently -- but the staff completely turned me off to the facility.
Beautiful setting
Nice setting in Pioneer....challenging but fun, lots of trees, very good condition when I play April 2013. Very nice bar with a great view and nice deck.
Nice course, friendly staff, new maintenance crew really making a difference.
Played here one day each of the last 2 weeks. Course is drying out nicely. New maintenance crew is doing a good job with mowing and general course upkeep. Drainage improvements doing wonders. Greens still need work and are very slow, but generally true.
When my partner needed a refund for a closed course due to rain, she had to go through Golf Now. Maybe you can try that...
