challenging
course has some rough spots, but very interesting and challenging Pete Dye holes throughout the course
Not a good experience
There once was a golf course at this location. Waaaaay over priced. One of the poorest designed courses in the NOVA area. On top of that, it is likely one of the most poorly maintained courses in the NOVA area. The greens and fairways are generally OK for a municipal course (but that is my attempt at kindness ). The course is stupid hard and is no place for a weekend golfer. It has the feel of "target" golf and only needs a windmill and a clowns mouth to putt though to complete the experience. The finishing hole is a short island green par three that would be perfect for a windmill. Crabgrass is growing in bunkers that contain sand so course that it must have been left over from a nearby concrete batch plant used for local highway construction. Sadly this could be a beautiful public course located on a beautiful piece of property if only the money were available for a redesign by a top notch architect.
Great deal
great deal. Worth the golfnow price. Nothing more.
VA Oaks is a great course to play
You get to use all of the clubs in your bag. And the 18th island green is sure to send you home laughing.
Holes renumbered and tee markers changed
Nice course, but you have to be OK with some blind shots, difficult holes, and uncomfortable looks as you stand on the teeing ground. Well maintained with a thick and sticky rough, good greens with a few exceptions for a small hole here and there on the putting surface (insects?).
They have switched the front and back nines so the former #1 hole is now #10 and the former #10 is now #1. The tee markers are now Red, White, and Blue versus the old Gold, Black and Green. My Garmin did not have the updated routing and the scorecards still show the old layout, but the hole numbering on the scorecard was overwritten by hand. Apparently, they are waiting for the new scorecards to arrive.
Nice staff and a fun course. The slope was lowered from 140 to 128 for the set of tees I played and I am unsure if that is accurate. I think it is more like 130-135. In any case, a good track and an enjoyable round.
Better than expected
Even after the three inches of rain, the course played pretty well. Greens were great. Staff was wonderful!
Course Needs Work
Course needs a lot of work:
1. Many areas of the course under renovation
2. Greens were in rough shape
3. Fairways were in rough shape
Staff needs to work together: We were informed on our way out to the 1st Tee that it was 90 Degrees Cart Rule. However, by the 13th hole, a staff member appeared, and yelled at us to get off the fairway stating that it was cart path only. We responded that we were instructed that the 90 Degree rule was in effect - which he disregarded without comment.
Course needs a lot of work. I understand management just changed, but $55 for a course that was in worse shape than many municipal courses just wasn't worth it.
Course is under repair
Course is not in the best of shape. They have switched up the scorecard, so that the back nine are holes 1 -9 and the front nine are holes 10 - 18. No explanation as to why they did this. Bunkers have rocks in them, and I could have easily broken a wedge on the very first hole I played out of a bunker!! :-(
Decent Course
Nice course for the price.........................
A work in progress
Under new ownership. Met Lonnie, one of the new principles in the parking lot. Made us feel extremely welcomed and appreciated for choosing to play here. Big plus. Friendly staff conveyed the same atmosphere. Course is undergoing some renovations and will be a huge success of a Gem when complete. Be patient. Support this local course owned by members of the community. This will be a top 10 course when revisions are complete.
Signature hole lost its signature
2 Comments. 1) Didn't like that they switched the nines around. Now you have that zig-zag par 5 to start your round - can't see where your drive lands, Almost everyone has to spend extra time looking for their drivel when at the beginning of your round you just want to get going. 2) All the trees are gone around the green on the signature hole that looks out over lake manassas.
Course has never been in worse shape
I have played this course multiple times in the last few years and it has always been in great shape and with knowledgable staff. However yesterday we arrived to an under construction course at normal prices. No bunkers even those not currently under construction were unkept and growing grass, fairways were under kept, no beverage carts, the list goes on. Upon the turn was the biggest disappointment we called in for a lunch order as we have always done when finishing our 8th hole and were told that due to a Sunday brunch gathering that they could not take our order over the phone and to order when we arrived to the clubhouse. Our threesome ordered a hot dog and two club sandwiches it took 25 minutes as we the golfers were back of the line and the brunch party next door took presidence. I have now written this course off of my attendance sheet and will continue to golf every weekend just not at virginia oaks.
Much work yet to be done
New owners have begun to try and transform this Pete Dye track into a course worth paying to play - but they appear to be at least a year away. The good - the original nines are now reversed which means the 'signature' island par 3 is now the finishing hole; most tee markers have been moved up so the course is a tad shorter; pace of play was OK as this has been a huge issue in the past (probably because now most players are playing off the correct distance); trees removed around the 'old' #4 green (now #13) to showcase Lake Manassas. The bad - more grass in the bunkers than sand (really needs to be a local rule here that all bunkers are GUR for the foreseeable future); tee boxes in use were mostly bare; greens are super slow; major areas of the majority of holes are under repair; fairways have patchy weeds. The highlight - the burger in the bar and grill.
Congrats Virginia Oaks
I always enjoy this course. As long as Virginia Oaks keeps Green fees affordable it will be great...too many facilities get crazy incleasing their green fees in the summer...Please don't screw up a good thing. Have to compliment staff especially Mike, Kelly and Daniette.
Appreciate a starter that is happy with his job and with the customers. Kelly great personality and attrative what else could one ask for? It will be great when greens shape up.

Nice but in transition
Course is fairly nice for a public golf course. They have switched up the holes, now playing 10 -18 as 1-9 and 1-9 as 10 - 18. Haven't updated the score cards or online apps yet. Greens were a bit rough since they have just aerated them so lots of holes and the ball doesn't run smoothly. They need to soften the sand as well. It's like hitting off of packed dirt. Would recommend not playing so early in the season.
Great course, but very soggy on the front 9
Very good GC and worth the money but unfortunately for us and perhaps because it was an early round (7:00 AM),the front 9 was very soggy
Seriously?
Someone needs to teach them how to aerate their greens. They didn't even bother to backfill them with sand. Most of the bunkers had grass/weeds growing in them. Most rakes were broken or non-existent. Also, no food (sandwiches/hot dogs, whatever) in the clubhouse. How can you not plan to have food on a beautiful late April day?
not bad
Course is being rebuilt after a owner change. Course lay out is nice and being able to see Robert Trent Jones course is cool. Greens are covered in sand and fairways have too many weeds. But as I said it's in a middle of a make over. I'm sure once this place matures and is well groomed it will be a great course. I'm gonna give it a few months and I'm sure I'll be there again
