Challenging layout with many bunkers
This course meanders through a residential area and there can be quite a long distance between tee offs due to this. Many road crossings can be confusing. The greens on the front 9 were like concrete and combined with the green slopes made them very difficult.
This course has excellent greens
We were very impressed with the condition of the golf course, green were in perfect condition and extremely fast with very seldom a straight put. Great placement of bunkers.
Only dissapointment was hole number nine which was moved up to a temporary tee which greatly shortened the hole and provided minor difficulty.
We look forward to playing the course again this summer.
Good track. Will play the course again!
Although the day was not what we were expecting ie: rain, wind and cold (particularly for this time of year) we were suitably impressed with the course layout and condition.
Greens were a challenge due to pin placement and the undulating character.
Fairways were tight in places and well trapped with both sand and water.
Tee boxes were well placed and in very good condition.
Staff do a commendable job both on the course and in the pro shop and restaurant.
One of the best courses in the area
I have managed to play 6 area courses and Horseshoe Highlands ranks as one of the best. We return every year and plan to in2014
Nice course
Quite lengthy even from the whites, fast greens with lots of break. Generous fairways but I still managed to hit 7 balls into penalty off the tees.
A nice but tough course; long and narrow with trees and houses!
My overall impression: friendly staff, excellent course winding through a residential area (or the other way around; maybe the course came first, THEN the houses?) but quite tough and long (even from the whites)!
Fairways were for the most part "narrow"-ish, lots of trees, slope elevations/angled lies, and some holes were literally situated in a person's front or back yard!
Not a lot of room for error on this course so if you tend to spray/be all over the place, it would be tough to recover! But other than that, greens rolled true and were well maintained along with the fairways and overall, the course itself was quite pretty! I can see how this course made it to Fairways magazine 2013 Top 10 Stay & Play in Ontario list (ranked #10). Would definitely come back! :-)
Excellent
This course is a jewel up here in Orillia and once hosted the Canadian Players Tour.
It is tight and requires accurate shooting.
The fairways are like hitting off carpet
From the tips, professional players would have hard time breaking par
Nice course carved thru the forest.
The pace was really good and the course is enjoyable to play. I'd love to go back in the fall when the colours at their peak.
Tale of two 9s
Front nine is punishing to those who haven't played before or those who can hit the long ball. When in doubt club down (use a 3wd or hybrid instead of a driver). If you can survive the front the back is much easier to score.
There were only a couple of negative about the course:
1) they make you pay for range balls - seems like a money grab to me and a resort course should never make the patrons pay to hit a few practice balls
2) the pace of play was super slow - even though there was a starter it seemed like they were letting people go as soon as the other group was out of range - let the group get off the green first to ensure that the groupings are spread out.
From the 'Blues', requires strategic shot planning and, for the most part, reasonably accurate execution.
What an excellent course!
Very well maintained from tee to green though some of the greenside bunkers were thin on sand.
The mix of tight and wide tee shots was well maintained and strategically located. Tee boxes were very well positioned for standard of our play.
For the first time played, most of the holes were relatively easy to bring to mind afterwards, i.e. there was little 'sameness' about the holes.
An interesting layout where the surrounding houses do not intrude, or influence, on the playing strategy - in fact, they are (for the most part) well hidden from view.
Really looking forward to re-playing the Highlands!
Beautiful course winds through forest and housing development.
A challenging track with tight fairways and several blind holes. Greens were clean and moderately fast. Pace of play was very good for a holiday weekend Sunday.
Course was in superb condition
First time player with my buddy from Toronto.
Had an enjoyable afternoon. Will definately return.
Lots of different features combined.
Each hole gives you different challenges and level of difficulties.
Beautiful layout
Was a beautiful challenging course well worth the money I would defenetly play again
Hills and valleys
The Highlands course is an excellent course for the under 100 golfer or the low handi-capper. Each hole is cut through the woods, which places a premium on accurate drives but the landing areas are ample. The greens were not super fast but relatively easy to read and true. We had a Golf Now twilight hot buy that made it very economical, even though ten dollars more than the Valley Course, which is not as nice.
This course is well worth playing.
I would highly recommend this course, great condition, from the blue tee decks, definitely a good challenge. One thing of note, a couple of the tee decks were not flat and you had to be wary of where you set up your shot....overall great course, great value.
outstanding
This course was a lot of fun to play, it had some easier holes and some more challenging holes, the course lay out and conditions were great. Definitely going back
Beautiful Course with excellent landscape features
Course was in good shape. Greens were a little plump and slow but overall were in good shape. Repaired about 5 additional divots per green as some players not repairing their divots (not cool).
Well layed out!
This course is awesome. Course layed out with some not so hard holes, but otherwise difficult to very difficult holes. I would recommend this course to any golfer (beginners or novice).
Enjoy and most of all... have fun!
They charge you for range balls because you got a deal on GolfNow. For $35 I suppose you should get a room for the night, a 5 minute shopping spree in the shop and use of the owners car for the evening..
