Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018 and transformed into Disc Golf Course.
Kayak Point Golf Club is one of Washington's most popular courses. It was named one of the "Top 50 Public Courses to Play" by Golf Digest, and the Seattle Times called it a "must play" course. Located in Stanwood, Kayak Point is less than an hour north of Seattle. The layout was carefully carved from an old growth forest of firs and cedars. You'll enjoy scenic views of the Olympic Mountains on several holes. The layout will test you with sloping fairways and large, immaculately manicured greens. There are more than 30 greenside bunkers at Kayak Point, but water comes into play on only two holes. The spacious golf course doesn't have any parallel fairways and it's not short on length at over 6,700 yards from the back tees.

no maintenance being done
i understand that we have been having some difficult weather conditions to maintain a golf course but its like they arent even trying.
Interesting course - not a great day.
This was the first day in many days that it wasn't raining cats and dogs. Hence, the course was an absolute rice paddy. There was standing water just about everywhere. It probably shouldn't have been open. That said, I can see where Kayak would be fun in a drier stretch of the year. Taking the muddy conditions out, the course is like playing in the middle of a forest. Best to keep the ball in the fairway. I only used my driver once. A lot of elevation change. Almost too much. Best if you review how to hit the ball on side-hill, down-hill and up-hill lies before you go. I found myself wondering when I might come to a flat, wide-open hole. No chance. A couple of the greens had some kind of disease with brown spots all over. The greens looked like they had chicken pox. But, they were planning to aerate and re-sand the greens later that day. The tee boxes are rarely level but, not horribly off... just enough to mess with my head. Interesting little golf course but, I'm really glad I got a 50% off deal on Golf Now... otherwise @ $50-$60 I would have been upset. I'll give it another try some day, when the weather is nice and I'm up for a challenge.
Need some serious work
This golf course needs work. The first and eighteenth hole are nice and groomed but the rest of the course is pretty bad. The fairways are non existent and blends in with the rough. The sand bunkers are tore up from play and full of water. Where are the people who take care of the course? I understand the weather around this area is crazy and it rains often but if other golf courses have the time to make the course look good so should everyone else. The whole pace of play thing is different everywhere but this place was slow. ive never spent six and a half hours playing a full eighteen. There was no one there to rush these people or even regulate anything in general. The staff was good. The lady selling food was a awesome person and the guy working in the pro shop was accommodating when we complained about the extremely slow group. If this place took care of the course I'll most definitely change my mind on it but as of now I don't think I'll be heading back.
Kayak needs some work!
The course has so much potential! It is still beautiful, but the fairways have so many ankle breaker holes. It needs leveling and new grass. The greens were being aerated and I didn't know that when I purchased tee time.
Beautiful setting
I play Kayak maybe 4 times a year. Love the setting in the forest, similar to another course, Gold Mountain, I also like playing. We rented a cart this time, but often walk. Long distance between some holes, ride cart if course is busy.
A challenge for everyone!
Our foursome plays the course every week. We enjoy it for many reasons, but mainly, it feels like home. The course is a great challenge, with many doglegs, challenging greens, and just plain fun! The staff is really cheerful and helpful too.
We all recommend the course, because it has everything we want. So many courses are just boring, but not so with Kayak.
Check it out... I think you will be pleasantly surprised. And by the way it is simply beautiful.
Incredible value
Love this course! It has fast greens, a beautiful setting and you can't beat the price.
Great value and venue
Not to be dramatic, but I almost pinch myself sometimes when I'm standing on a tee, or waiting for a playing partner to putt. You feel like you are the only ones on the course with the quietness, and beauty of the place, it makes you happy to be a golfer. Steve and his staff are working hard to make maintenance improvements as money allows. It's hard to complain when we get to play it, as senior members, for $30.00 with cart. We certainly would love to see the fairways in better shape and the sand bunkers appropriately dressed and have adequate sand, but understand the budget limitations. It is my favorite course anywhere. You won't regret the drive or the experience.
This course is a walk in the park
I belong to three golf courses and this one is my favorite by far. I love the wild life and the smell of the cedar trees. Playing here teaches you course management. It is beautiful and the green are in wonderful shape. It has no houses on the course so it is very quiet and peaceful. The staff couldn't be nicer or more accommodating.
Price, Course and staff make this one of the best public courses in WA.
I have been playing this course since it open in 1977 and it has always been one of my and my friends favorites. Many of the holes are like an isolated walk through the woods and are well separated from adjoining fairways.
This course takes a bit longer to play 4.5 -5 hours on a normal day due to the terrain, but there are always marshals out maintaining pace of play. On weekends as with most courses you can expect it to be a little slower.
Over the past two years the course has been challenged by irrigation issues due to last years drought & low water table and clogged irrigation pipes this year. The county and the course staff has resolved the issues and the fairways are coming back nicely. the greens remained in great shape throughout. I highly recommend Kayak
What in the world happened?
So this used to be one of my favorite Courses in the Northen area of Pudget sound. But to get me to go back after this horrible experience there is going to take a lot of effort on the course and or any of my friends.
Lets start with the greens, although in probably what was the highlight of the round for conditions, very inconsistent on speed of the greens. Some were running well into the 13/14 range(not a problem by any means) and then the next green maybe running an 8. Also ROCK hard greens, when I throw a lob wedge straight into the air and the ball releases 30 ft that is shocking to me, especially being some one who can zip a ball back off a green too. This also came into play where some greens were super soft and others overly firm.
Onto the tee boxes and fairways.... or better wording lack there of. There was no line in between fairway and rough, and about half way through the round I stopped aiming for the fairways cause I would get better lies in the rough. And I mean this 100% there was no grass in the fairway! And if there was it was 4 inches tall! This was like this on a number of fairways as well.
Pace of play was out right awful, where in the world is a marshal when you actually need one! My group was stuck behind a 4 some who could barely hit the ball, wouldn't let us play through even though we were on them on every hole. And what happened to etiquette and dress code?
I know this sounds like I'm just ranting, but considering I have played all of there sister courses this year and am a member of one of them, this was shameful on how the course was.
Needs work
Although the greens were in great shape the fairways were WAY to bumpy! Your ball would lie in a hole and your stance could be awkward and driving the carts on fairway is difficult, but the midweek price I received was worth the troubling conditions .
SLOW PLAY.
Have played Kayak many times and love the course. Played Saturday at 9/10 2:30 I get that it is going to be busy. But you cannot enjoy a round of golf when it takes almost 6 hours to play a round. We saw the Marshal 1 time. In my opinion we should have seen him a few times just to make sure they were doing everything they can do to keep up the pace of play. If I have to play on a Saturday afternoon it will not be at Kayak.
The course needs work
I have played Kayak for years. I have not been there in over a year. I have never seen the fairways in such poor condition. Tee boxes are advertised as new, really? I get that getting there maybe an issue because of traffic. My suggestion put the money back into the golf course versus the club house. It is a wonderful location. It is a beautiful track when it is kept up.
Terrible Pace of Play
I rated this course as I did for the slow play. This course has tee times staggered every 7 minutes, and given the challenges of this course, and the many beginners that frequent this course, it will backup immediately. We went off 7 minutes late, and briefly waited on the second hole, and then the third hole was backed-up with 4 groups waiting to tee off. The pace of play was better beginning on the 4th, but we still had to wait on every hole as least one group. It ended up as 5 1/2 hour. The marshal came out once during the round on the 8th hole and asked if we had been waiting. The course conditions were poor to fair as the fairways, and tee boxes were in bad shape. Greens were average. I will think twice before returning to this track.
This course is challenging and has an excellent staff
The amazing come back is what I call this course and its crew. A couple months ago there was a a irrigation problem. It couldn't of happened at a worse time the days were at there hottest and if you don't have adequate irrigation it only takes a couple days and the grass dies. I know from experience that it could have been a lot worse, but the pro, the superintendent and his crew must of worked countless hours to recover during and after the suction piping for the pumps were repaired by divers. My hat goes off to everyone who missed there dinner with the wife and kids because they were working there butts off to make it right. Good Job, the course looks and plays outstanding. REX
Weekend Warriors
Really Enjoyed the Course and round with a couple of my family members.
Thank Goodness it was only $33
I had to drive an hour to meet my dad here, but even if it was five minutes from my house I probably wouldn't play here again.
The positives:
- The staff was very friendly, and the starter gave us lots of tips & advice as first-timers
- The greens were in fine shape
- $33 w/ cart is a heckuva deal for a weekend.
The negatives:
- Pace of play. It took us 5 1/2 hours to finish....and we all had carts!
- The fairways were in awful shape. Brown & yellow "grass", but played more like hard dirt so everything is hit thin because you can't make a divot.
- The tee boxes were pretty bad too, some of my tees wouldn't even go in more than 1 inch.
- No drink cart. It was 90 degrees out! Good thing I brought my own stuff.
I had heard mixed reviews about the course and I'm glad to have tried it out, but since it's over an hour from my house I wouldn't play there again unless it was free, but even then I'm not a fan of the layout either, just not my style. Like I said, glad it was only $33. I'd be more upset if I had paid $65.
Tee Boxes
Tee Boxes are in poor shape. Group of four behind me were very loud the entire 18 holes. Poor etiquette throughout play. They almost hit a twosome when the were lined up at the 17th tee and never yelled FORE. I find poor etiquette to be a common more and more. I have been here many times before and the course is extremely pleasant and serene.
Thank you for your comments we had a few staffing issues this weekend and are behind on mowing with storm clean up and 8 inches of rain the 7 days prior. I am happy to say that with the weather the past few days we have been mowing while it's been light and are close to getting caught up. We are working hard to get better everyday. With this or any issues feel free to reach out to me at Kayak anytime 360-652-9676 ext. 3. Steve
