Very nice course

Staff and course very nice. Wayfinding was difficult as they were in process of re- marking all tee boxes. Restrooms are an issue. Only one at the break on the North Course. Not used to having a nine hole stretch without restroom! Mid day food was also not available. I think that was a fluke, as it was cold weather. Overall a nice track with interesting greens.

New Years Eve Round

A few issues. The Pace of Play was EXTREMELY SLOW. The Club House does not have any "grab & go" food for the turn. They didn't even have any hotdogs. What kind of Club House doesnt have any hotdogs? This was the 2nd time I've played the course. We're playing again on Sunday. Hopefully conditions will change.

Nostalgic Austin club

This was my second time at Onion Creek and the first time I got to see the original front nine. The routing on this day was a little weird because there was work being done on the original back, so after the front, I had to drive out to North 5 (Crenshaw 1) and when I was done at 13 (a par 3) drive back. Definitely not walkable in this setup.

The 7th hole is nuts: 601 yards with hazard right and you can't draw the ball because of overhanging limbs. If it were my club i'd lobby for some Husqvarna on some of those limbs.

A few of the other holes on the front are pretty nondescript and run along the creek.

In all honesty, I think nearby Jimmy Clay GC has a better layout, but it seems like all the atx munis' greens are either struggling or are a season away from struggling. Onion's were pure. Arcis golf recently bought the club off Dominion. I'll be curious what comes as a result. The clubhouse looks very 70s, but I was jealous of the practice amenities. This is one of the three clubs in town I'd consider joining once my kids get a little older. I saw some pull carts out there as well as a dog, which tells me I might get along with membership just fine.

Lost glory

The staff at this semi private course resents the fact that they must allow the public to play the course to continue operations. A great classic layout that has fallen into disrepair for really unknown reasons. It’s time to invest some money into keeping this classic course functioning. At best, it’s just another AUSTIN municipal course.

Nice Staff. Terrible Conditions.

I’m usually very complimentary. The greens were horrendous. Truly terrible. Slow groups ahead but were real nice and let us play through. Also our cart ran out of batteries on 16. Staff was great.

Waiting for spring/summer to play again

Not a lot has changed since I last reviewed this course 5-1/2 years ago.

The course has 27 total holes so different nines can be played as directed by the clubhouse. On this occasion, we played the Original To North configuration. For those of us who rarely play here, it was a little different to end our round yet be sitting there amongst more holes. We essentially had to backtrack a little down a cart path or two in order to get back to the clubhouse.

The driving range holds about 20 players and is certainly long enough to test your driver. Balls are in little golf bag buckets and they have cleaning stands with water and towels. I certainly appreciate these little touches at courses. There are 2-3 putting and/or chipping greens -- enough space for everyone to warm up, practice, etc.

The tee boxes were all in decent shape; they'd definitely seen some action recently. Playing on a Wednesday, I kind of expected them to be moved to better ground after a typical high activity weekend. I really wish courses in general would move the tee boxes around more often so that we're more likely standing on good/solid grass when teeing off.

Fairways were in fine shape -- nothing outstanding, nothing to complain about. The first cut was also in similar condition. I'd say it's moderate when it comes to scrambling and bailout room for those golfers who are not consistently hitting the fairways.

I found three (3) bunkers on this outing. The first was quite standard with decent sand. The second was compact and hard; there was no getting under the ball. The third was very soft but also very wet.

Greens are medium to large size and held the balls well. They were average pace if not even a touch on the slow side this week. I did notice a number of them had been painted and/or fertilized (mostly around the edges). Perhaps that's simply indicative of this time of year and growth stage. I could speak on it more if only I were more knowledgeable.

I do believe they've added some additional water coolers since my last visit. There's plenty on the course to keep us hydrated during the warmer months. They also had a beverage cart running during our round and we passed her three (3) times.

Outside of the holes, parts of this course have a little extra land that's simply extra space. That happens sometimes when courses are part of a master plan where the developers have a lot with which to work. The downside is that it creates more areas for the landscape crews to handle. And when it's just extra land, courses rarely do much more than keep it mowed (if and when). So, it generally fills up with less desirable grasses, weeds, etc. And when it's not regularly maintained, it can hurt the overall look and feel for a course. And when I'm playing a semi-private club that has a membership base, I just tend to expect a little more attention to such details. Just an observation. Also, I noticed a few trees along the creek holes that may be dead. Spring hasn't yet sprung so we'll just have to wait and see. Floods in recent years may be a factor along with age. I just hope they take any dead ones out ASAP so as to give the area a better/kept look. It might be time to plant some new ones here and there as well; have to plan for the long-term and future decades.

Sanded Greens and Rude Pro Shop Lady

Generally, I like this course, but they had just sanded the greens that morning, and they didn’t make mention of that before I showed up. Not cool. They were terrible.

I also played with a member who thought he was funny, but was just an A.H. with his incessant degrading remarks about his partner’s play, and mine at times. Maybe it had something to do with the flask he kept hitting at 11am.

Also, I may join this club someday (as my wife and son grow interest in playing as well), so I WANT to like this club, but I get a very pretentious vibe from the pro shop half of the time I’m there. The guy was great, but the woman in there was curt at best. They need to step it up.

I felt appreciated.

I think this place is a gem. I felt welcome in a place I am not a member. Even the other golfers were plesent. I had to leave early as my daughter got ill and needed me. Brett Garret is a class act, he is the assistant golf pro and he made all the difference. I will be back sooner than later, looking for a home and membership in Onion Creek someday.

Private course but open to public by using the app

Needs better signage through the course and hard to find the clubhouse. No map on the tee card and they have a strict NO denim policy.

Must Play

In the Austin area, so played a round at Onion Creek. While fairways in TX are dormant this time of year, course played well. Greens rolled true, bunkers were perfect and pace was great (3.5h).Played w couple of members that made me feel right at home. Staff was very accommodating. Can't wait to go back in late spring.

I'm flying in from Manhattan, KS to play on Friday, is the course green or is everything dormant?

Worth It! Great Course

This is a fantastic layout. Former Senior PGA tour course. The course isn't in top-notch quality, but it's still totally worth $75 or less to play. I can usually get on for about $45 in the afternoon, and it's a no-brainer compared to Grey Rock or Plum Creek. It's an older course, so it has lots of mature trees that adds to the character. FYI I typically spend about $50 to play, scratch golfer, and play once per week.

Short and Tight

Great course with alot of history. Not long, maybe not even 6500 from the tips. Compensates my being super tight. My personal record for OB shots off the tee. Greens were fairly nice- fast downgrain very slow against. I'd play again for sure.
